Nice edit, I can feel the hours upon hours of editing in this. Clever track too, I was convinced It was something from the show at first. I'll never understand why people would thumbs down something that clearly took alot of time and effort to make :^(

Hey man, I really appreciate that you even came here, number 1, then liked, and commented even. You are a baller and I am humbled by the compliment. As for the thumbs down guy, I respect his vote, too :). I wish he would have dropped some criticism that I could keep in mind as I make the next, but hey, whatever -- he's got the same rights I do :p. Glad you stopped by :D (I'm a fan of your channel, too!!)

Sadly, it's usually just someone who immediately dislikes because they don't like the music. Can't please everyone, I guess.

I was rocking with this when I saw it and the music was stuck in my head for two days afterward. This smooth fast-cut editing is top-notch and needs to be admired and revered by more. Plus it fits the theme and overall feeling of Cowboy Bebop very well. How anyone can NOT like this is some sort of Twilight Zone esque witchcraft...

I can't even tell how this makes me feel.
Cowboy be-bop always have been a masterpiece for me, the smoothness of the animation, the nostalgic but sinical mood, the broken dreams thematic, and that god damn blues...
But this is a sublimination of one of the best thing I have ever seen, I mean, how it is even possible?
Thanks so much for that work, I will destroy that replay button, count on me!

Yeeeeess, AB has been so kind to me; I can't believe so many people got to see this and liked it. I have over 9000 feels. If you like rhythmic editing and want to see something a little more on the atmospheric side, check out Counter by Unlucky Artist (ua-cam.com/video/QCC5e3qHmDk/v-deo.html). He pretty much roundhouse kicked me at SakuraCon in Upbeat and he's pretty brilliant.

I've showed this to people who don't even like anime or Bebop, just to show how how legit the amv community is as an artform, not just linking scenes to music. Amazing. Going in for another watch.

This anime will always bee on of the coolest, if not the coolest, I have ever seen.
There was no complicated story that evolved into countless seasons, the characters had their own motivations and were not linked to each other, they did things just becasue it had to be done, and more importantly, they did not talk about their feelings at all, and by the end, the main character dies and that is it, there is no post scene were other characters are feeling sad, depressed or any of that, this was just too good.

Gotta be one of my favorites now, and the best thing about it is that all the laborious editing turns into something very subtle and pleasant. You know, I'm tired of over-the-top, flamboyant editing that screams "look at how good I am" but hurts the eyes, and here I could see right away how brilliant it was. Inspiring, creative, unique and as stylish as CowBe. Congratulations, I'm not _that_ much of a masochist yet, hahah.

DopplerDo At the AFO AMV Contest we typically we have 3 judges, and each judge picks their favorite after picking awards for best in each category. Then the Fans vote at the show via web/sms and the video that did not win any other awards and has the highest votes gets Fan Favorite. Thanks very much for entering and we hope to see you again next year.

In Session 1, Laughing Bull foretells of Spike's death being brought on by a woman.
Laughing Bull: Swimming bird will meet a woman. The bird will be hunted by this woman. And then death.
    Spike: One more time.
    Laughing Bull: What's that?
Spike: I was killed once before by a woman.
Spike is speaking of Julia. Losing her love was so painful as to be considered a form of death. He was left in a detached dream-like purgatory from that day on.
In Session 26, Julia is shot in front of Spike. White doves fly by in slow motion. Horror, shock, and agony are expressed in Spike's left eye. He screams her name, drops his weapon, and runs to her. He takes her in his arms. Hears her last words, which are inaudible to the audience.
Spike looks down at his lost love and then up to the sky. The camera is now focused on Spike's right eye, which is shaking in a disturbing manner. The camera zooms into Spike's pupil and everything fades to black.
The next scene is of Laughing Bull predicting Spike's imminent death.
Holding Julia's coat, Vicious speaks of Spike.
Vicious: A beast that has lost his place. He has nowhere to return to now. He will come.
Vicious is both right and wrong. Spike will come, but he does have somewhere to return to one last time.
Two rose petals are shown blowing away in the wind.
Spike returns to the Bebop and tells Jet a story. An allegory about his life which he uses to explain why he will never return.
Spike: There once was a tiger striped cat. This cat died a million deaths, revived and lived a million lives, and he was owned by various people who he didn't really care for. The cat wasn't afraid to die. Then one day the cat became a stray cat, which meant he was free. He met a white female cat, and the two of them spent their days together happily. Well, years passed, and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger striped cat cried a million times, and then he died too. Except this time, he didn't come back to life.
Jet is keenly aware that Spike's death looms in the horizon. He is wary of the tale's implications.
When Spike gets up to leave, Jet asks him one last question.
Jet: Is it for the girl?
Spike: [beat] She's dead. There's nothing I can do for her now.
This is true. Julia is dead. There is nothing Spike can do for her. This does not lessen the impact she has on the events that are about to unfold. Jet understands this. Upon hearing of Julia's death, he has a resigned if devastated reaction. He knows exactly what this means for Spike.
Faye confronts Spike while holding him at gunpoint. She knows that he is marching towards his death.
Faye: Where are you going? Why, are you going? You told me once, to forget the past, ‘cause it doesn’t matter, but you’re the one still tied to the past, Spike!
Spike does not deny this. Instead, he explains the truth about his eyes. The camera spans from his left eye to his right eye.
Spike: Look at my eyes, Faye. One of them is a fake because I lost it in an accident. Since then, I've been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So, I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture.
Faye: Don’t tell me things like that; you’ve never told me anything about yourself, so don’t tell me now!
Spike: I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was all over.
This is not the first time Spike has expressed this sentiment. One of his most revelatory quotes was said in the teaser for Ballad of Fallen Angels.
Spike: The music box is broken, or is it? It starts to play, and a haunting tune fills the air. I wake suddenly from my dream. There is no music box! And yet there it is. A tiny one nestled in my hand. And I awaken from my dream again. As if I were peeling an onion. It’s a dream no matter how far I go. I can never reach reality. Trapped in an endless nightmare.
Spike is so affected by the loss of the woman he loves that even an item she once possessed haunts him. It is her death that has finally woken him from his detached dream-like state.
Faye shares with Spike that her memory has returned. She explains that there was nowhere for her to go back to. She pleads with him to stay.
Spike ignores her please and instead leaves her with these parting words.
Spike: I’m not going there to die; I’m going to find out if I’m really alive. I have to do it, Faye.
Faye is not comforted by this statement. The audience should not be comforted either. Spike's words eerily echo what Jet said to him in session 25.
Jet: Men only think about the past right before their death, as if they were searching frantically for proof that they were alive.
Faye cries and shoots off her gun. An act reminiscent of the 21-gun salute that is used in the military to honor the fallen.
Spike walks away from Faye without looking back. He is never shown thinking about anyone from the Bebop again.
The song "See You Space Cowboy" plays as Spike leaves the Bebop.
    "Everything is already over",
    You say with closed ears
    The words only flow
    Towards a tomorrow without peace
    "There's nothing that won't change"
    Even if my life ends
    This love will not disappear
It's something that will live forever
Even if dreams are hidden in darkness
    I got a rainbow
    Rainbow in your hands...
The camera zooms in on Spike's left eye. The eye that sees Spike's past. The lyrics begin as Spike is recalling romantic memories of Julia. He thinks of the first time he saw Julia and was captivated by her beauty. He thinks of a time when he made love to Julia and she cradled him in her arms.
Given that Spike confided to Jet just the previous session that Julia was a part of him, the image shows a moment in Spike's life when he felt whole.
Spike: She was a piece of me I had lost. She is my other half that I had longed for.
The song continues to play as Spike attacks the syndicate. It is a ballad of undying love alluding to lovers being reunited in the afterlife.
When Spike faces off against his hated rival, Vicious makes a proclamation.
Vicious: So, you're finally awake. I told you before, Spike. I'm the only one who can kill you and set you free.
Spike does not deny this. But makes a proclamation of his own.
Spike: Those words apply to you as well, Vicious.
During their fight, there comes a moment where the two disarm each other by swapping weapons. Vicious getting Spike's gun and Spike getting Vicious's katana. It is at this moment that Spike makes a statement of great significance to both men.
Spike: Julia passed away. Let's end it all.
    Vicious: If that's your wish.
The rivals return their weapons. Spike shoots Vicious but gets sliced across the abdomen.
Vicious's death comes quickly, while Spike lingers as was foreshadowed.
Vicious: Don't forget, a snake's venom poisons slowly after the bite.
Spike watches Vicious's body fall to the ground, spends but a few of seconds looking at him, then looks up to the night's sky. The camera is focused on Spike's right eye. Now calm.
Spike sees Julia. This is the first time in the entire series that Spike is shown seeing Julia with his right eye.
In session 13, during an auditory flashback, Spike and Julia discuss his eyes.
Spike: My left eye sees the past.
Julia: What about your right eye?
We do not hear his response.
In the penultimate scene of the series, we are specifically shown what Spike sees with his eye that sees his present. He sees her.
In Spike's vision, Julia is cast in a white light. She says her last words to Spike, this time they are audible to the audience. Spike is shown reflected back in Julia's eye. He glumly concurs with her. Spike is then completely engulfed by a blinding white light. The scene fades to white. This light is reminiscent of the divine light that is cast upon a soul that is ready to ascend to heaven.
    Julia: It's all a dream.
Spike: Yeah. Just a bad dream.
From white we transition to the final scene of the series. It is now day. A white light is now cast over the entire syndicate.
Spike smiles, points a finger gun at the remaining syndicate goons and says "bang".
This is a callback to Wen from session 6. As Wen was dying he asked Spike if he understood the relief that came with one's own death. In response, Spike threw Wen's harmonica up in the air, pretended to shoot it while saying "bang", but then said "as if". When Spike says "bang" this time he is acknowledging that he now understands that relief.
Spike falls to the ground. He is never shown moving again. White doves are shown flying over Spike's body. White doves also flew by Julia when she died.
The camera follows an ascension into the heavens, while the song "Blue" plays. The song's lyrics allude to a soul ascending to heaven.
    Free
    Wanna be free
    Gonna be free
    And move among the stars
You know, they really aren't so far
    Feels so free
    Gotta know free
    Please
Don't wake me from the dream
    It's really everything it seems
    I'm so free
No black and white in the blue
    Everything is clearer now
Life is just a dream, you know
    That's never-ending
    I'm ascending
At the end of the credits a star goes out but never falls.
In session 13, Laughing Bull informs the audience to what a falling star truly is.
Laughing Bull: The tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battle. A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm. Where the great spirit awaits us all.
Given that the star we are shown does not fall, it is reasonable to infer that the soul the star belonged to did make its way to the great spirit that awaits us all.
That soul has broken away from the cycle of death and rebirth and is never coming back. As was foreshadowed to happen to Spike in the fable of the tiger striped cat, who followed his love into death and never returned.

Haha yeah. This is my first AWA Pro since I’ve been editing for less than two years now, so the biggest reason I participated was to get and really listen to the editor feedback. Most people had an issue with the somewhat random source switching so I created a single source version that is much tighter and a better story imo. I don’t tie my ego into my work so it’s super easy to start over any time 😝

When making AMV's or GMV's its so hard to tackle the full length of the song. Usually people will just do parts of the song and edit that but you didn't which in the end paid off extremely well. Making long lengthy reviews are only reserved to those who deserve such things and this one is one of them. Quality work unfortunately goes under the radar and I usually get upset when I can't find enough of them. But when you do find high quality videos with a quality UA-cam channels its like you struck gold. I really think songs play a key role the editing process because it has to vibe with footage from start to finish.
    MY REVIEW:
The video from the very beginning is very smooth and is easy on the eyes for all viewers to watch and grasp. the transitions with cross fade are a great touch. Around 0:00 to 0:18 its a little slow and boring for me due to attention span, But then at 0:18 it picks up and you start noticing all the cool effects. At 0:23 the rewinds are such a nice effect to the beat of the song that I loved a lot. The bass bumps are another feature that I feel adds more of pop at 0:24 when Faye is smoking a cigarette. The speeding of each clip faster and back to normal is wonderfully done.
At 0:31 after Spike shoots a goon and the goon falls back with the rewind transition is top notch. I also like the effect you used at 0:33 with Spike and his helper with the flute. At 0:47 I felt like maybe the rewind effect could have been better with Spike close up. I actually don't know if that is how you intend it to be but I felt like it could have been better. Its very, very minor and almost seems seamless.
At 0:48 with the hands moving the wheel and rewind effect is so good but its so fast many viewers won't even notice it. At 0:55 Spike dodging punches and the rewind effect is so satisfying to watch. At 1:09 when the girls with dark hair is zoomed in upon and then the still motion image is so good. At 1:09 with the wipe transition to the beat and the boy playing the harmonica to 1:16 is out of this world spectacular. All that laser stuff with all the rewind effects from 1:18 - 1:26 is just ridiculous.
I mean what words can describe all that stuff😅, At 1:38 with editor name on the password key was clever and very creative. At 1:52 when Spike is holding his arm and the clip is showing half and then shows the other half to beat is so smooth. At 2:15 - 2:19 it does get a little boring but then it picks right back up 2:20. At 2:20 - 2:30 the beat and fading with each clip is just a wonderful display like fireworks. At 2:30 I noticed grain which is a nice added effect unless that was in the show.
I love the editing with the pieces of paper that are cast out the window at 2:31. The explosions to the beat are incredible not once but twice at 2:32 - 2:34. At 2:45 all the way to the end I feel like the editing feels like a rush to the end due exhaustion. I maybe wrong but that is just what I think. At 3:14 snow rewinding back and forth to the beat was a very nice touch.
    MY VERDICT:
Overall I really like this video along side the song choice that was used. If you have never heard the song before like me it might take some time for the music to grow on you. The editing is high quality and because it was it deserves massive appreciation in the comment section. The picture quality and the sound quality is top notch and it shows. This AMV is an absolute banger especially on a TV screen that is massive. The video is an absolute vibe and the editor handles the video with care and it shows. The video is very addictive to watch over and over again. I can only imagine how much frustration went into making this video. I didn't capture all the details in review but tried to the best I could. There is only so much you can do when using playback speed at 0:25x.
9 out of 10 for me.
Thanks for reading this ridiculously long lengthy comment

    • @DopplerDo
      @DopplerDo  Рік тому +2

Hey there is nothing more I like than lengthy comments like this! An AMV like this takes 60-ish hours to make so I appreciate when someone gives me a chunk of their time back! Thank you so much for noticing and reacting to the details here - I always hope someone like you sees them! Thanks again 🙏!

@@DopplerDoAs an editor myself I understand appreciation for video editing. Its the modern version of art that is under appreciated. There are more trash video edits out there which just increases the worth of this video more. If the video has 0 views and 0 likes and that never changes on whatever social media platform it on but its HIGH QUALITY, that's always what it will be, HIGH HIGH QUALITY.
My teacher once gave me an analogy of a diamond. A diamond deep in the earth that is never found vs that which is discovered and admired by all doesn't change anything about the diamond because a diamond will always be a diamond. A diamond is beautiful just like this video is. If diamonds were easy to find the worth of the diamond would diminish.
I am grateful I was searching because if I didn't I wouldn't have found this video. Its ridiculous how hard you have to search for a video like this. Whats even more ridiculous is finding a UA-cam Channel like yours and editors like you. To find editors like you with driving passion and those who will to take time to perfect there videos is like striking a diamond.

How did you do that rewind static effect

    • @DopplerDo
      @DopplerDo  6 років тому

Hey, welcome back, SGK! It's a little hard to explain, but in order of operations, I have 1) a layer with the moving image (often faster than 100%), 2) Black video with a noise filter (no color noise or clipping result values) and wave warp filter generally set to sawtooth wave type & low antialiasing, 3) an adjustment layer on top with the same settings, but ~40% noise (with color and clipping) and a wave warp filter (set to smooth noise this time). You really have to play around with the settings depending what your base layer is. Hope that helps :)!

I really enjoyed this. I'm not sure why, this was just really fun to watch, but in the end, it turned into pretty serious too. It was an (I call) "evolving" AMV, where the begginning, and the ending is different, both in content, and editing. You changed, but it's alright. I still enjoyed it really much.

This was a great amv. Prob my favorite at AB this year but felt it was in the wrong genre. Nice job though on the award.

Thanks for coming by and dropping the compliment, Soookulio! And that’s a really interesting insight. Where do you think it should have gone?

    • @simonbass255
      @simonbass255 6 років тому +2

I would agree that it felt a bit out of place in the Upbeat category, most of the other videos in that category seemed more happy and fun. I can definitely see why you chose Upbeat, but this video is so unique that it's hard to choose just one category. I guess that's why there's also an "Other" category? This one could also possibly go under action, but I'm not an expert in AMVs by any means so I don't really know. But either way this video is perfect as is, the problem is trying to push it into a single predefined category, which speaks to how unique it is!

    • @Soookulio
      @Soookulio 6 років тому +2

I was kind of thinking of what Simon was, which is why I thought it should have been in other.

    • @DopplerDo
      @DopplerDo  6 років тому +2

Brosephs, I think you're totally right. Haha, it just feels weird to submit purposefully to "other." DTR did win Best Action at TsukinoCon, where I entered it that way, but hey, at the end of the day I'm just glad you two enjoyed it. I don't enter cons to win :). Thanks for spending the time to tell me what you think -- if you see it entered in Action from now on, just know that's all you two :p!

Hey I would love to but I hardly have the time to get on discord at all myself. I sometimes do AMAs on this channel and set aside time to talk about anything, but I sadly can’t do all the 1:1 stuff I’m asked to. I hope you understand. If you have a simpleish question though, I can try to answer here. Maybe someone will randomly see it and be helped by it, too 😄

Hey man spectacular job. Started this series last year and I really think spike is a great character. His past and present. It's just really cool how the flashbacks are introduced in ep 5 give the viewer a glimpse into his mind and past but still leaves you questioning. Though I started making edits recently you really made this your own. Really really cool. I subscribed Rock on man. You need more views. If you are interested check mine our. It's not even close to your style but it's kind of a tribute to spike. Anyways keep up the great work :)

    • @DopplerDo
      @DopplerDo  6 років тому +2

Yeah, there are a lot of open-ended questions in Cowboy Bebop and rabbit holes you need a few beers to deal with :p. I really appreciate the compliments on this one -- it was a labor of love to make. And hey, your view counts for a lot in my book! This don't have to hit any magical number of views; I'm just happy to share it with y'all who stop by. There's more to come ;)!

Also, I think I have already watched Just a Dream before and it's good! I don't have the guts to do the voiceover style, but it is really powerful and people really gravitate toward it. I hope you make some more in 2018! Seems like you sprint in inspiration every 5 months and ship like mad before a nice break ;).

    • @MGSisboss
      @MGSisboss 6 років тому +2

DopplerDo just made a new one I'm better with the voice stuff but the quick cuts like you do are really hard lol especially with keeping the beat. I'm trying more and more. We should do a collaboration one day. Let me know what you think
