Isnt the opposite? Beginners first take harder shoes and then when they develop the tehnique and strength in their bone system, you go softer, less stability shoes for speed
Thank you Kofuzi for this great video! I bought the Novablast 3 and ran 12 mile run yesterday and short 4 mile run today. They feel very comfortable. Thanks again for your recommendation and always honest and practical opinions! Cheers!
Thank you. I see reviews on these shoes above average. I’ve had tremendous luck with Saucony. Top notch quality, design, affordability and customer service.
Good advice! I coach a learn to run group and many people always ask. I generally say, "walk into a store and walk for a neutral daily trainer and if the people at the store can't answer that, or stutter, walk away immediately". I've been recommending the clifton lately and tell people "if it feels slow, get the mach 4/5. If you think you need some stability then get the arahi"
Yeap!! That’s exactly what I recommend, buy a great great shoe from last year, and that money that you save, use it for good running clothes 👍🏼. They are so many options. And also, if you have one of this stores close to you Ross, Marshall’s, Burlington, Macy’s and maybe your local running store, they also have great discount prices when they are trying to have space for new shoes. Good luck out there 👍🏼
Well I've been using the Clifton 9 for the past 250 miles and I've been happy so far using them for all my runs. Just found the Adios pro 3 on sale for $140 so I'll give them a shot for my first race shoe. Thanks for your recommendations!
Great video, Mike! I liked that you tossed in a trail shoe in this video as well. And I agree that you don't always need to buy current model year shoes, as you can often get some really nice previous model year shoes at a good $$$.
Gosh with the massive choice out there must’ve been sooo hard to narrow it down, but I have to totally agree with your choices here… can’t fault any of those for anyone starting out!! Furthermore those shoes are also quite long-wearing in addition to being versatile and very very comfortable!! Bravo Kofuzi!!! 👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻
I'm new to running (1 year): here is a consumer smart route to go - 1. watch shoe reviewers like Kofuzi, Seth Demoor, and believe in the run. They offer great insight on any shoe u may have interest in. Buy at discount, go one year older. And go with a "tweener" daily trainer that can go any distance at any speed. My wife and I BOTH went with New Balance 1080v11. AFTER a quick breaking in of the shoe. We both love them! It's my wife's only running shoe (4 miles a week) and 1/3 of my current rotation runs. Which now includes Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 and NB SC Trainer v1.
With the deals Nike from time to have on the Vaporfly, I think its the best racing option. Super fast, works really well for shorter distances and not too unstable.
I started this running journey with the following: Nike Invincible 2, New Balance Fresh Foam V4, Nike React Miler 3, Nike React Infinity Run 3, and Saucony Triumph 19. As a heavy runner coming in at 282 lbs after much research I figured I would get some max heavy cushioned shoes with different foams in order to mix it up. Did my first 2 mile today on the Nike Invincible 2 and I felt great. For tomorrow workout, it will be the Fresh Foam V4, and so forth.
I have a feeling you may like sneakers a little bit if you’re just getting into running but bought 5 pairs of sneakers 🤣. I did a similar thing after being out of running for a few years. I bought two at first, one didn’t work out so I bought another, I just purchased a pair of ASICS nimbus 25s for more of that max cush feel that’s been missing from my lineup.
Since I am a heavier guy also, I decided to go with Saucony Endorphin Shifts, Hoka Bondi 8 and Saucony Endorphine Speed 2's. The speeds will be race day shoes for me. I'll have to take a look at the few other ones you listed too.
Love this video, thank you. I'm going to get new ones on Friday and this helped narrow down what I am looking for, hopefully. I have had the Adidas Supernova since 2017 and absolutely love them but they are well and truly falling to bits now.
In addition to the list, i got the novablast 3 TR for 110 euros and are quite versatile for begginers (nice midsole and fit for asphalt as well for light trail)
An excellent video. I currently am running in the Hoka Mac4 and Clifton 8 and ASICS Novablast 3 as daily trainers. ASICS Evoride 2 for tempo runs and most recently a 10K race. Hoka Carbon X is my half marathon and marathon shoe. Hoka Torrent is my trail shoe and is excellent for trail races. A lot of shoes I admit, but I bought them over a 2 year period. I've found that using different daily trainers is excellent injury prevention.
I like the cushion of the Novablast 2 for a recovery shoe, but for me it is too heavy for daily use. I would recommend the Saucony Endorphin Speed 1 or 2 for use a daily trainer and an all-around shoe. Both these shoes are much lighter, have a good deal of cushion, can also be used for speed work and racing, and they can be found on sale for about $80. I have run up to the Half Marathon distance in the Speed. I prefer the Speed 1/2 over the Speed 3.
Bought the Novablast 2 after I started over from my jones fracture operation in my right feet. I must say thanks to you, Kofuzi! I can run 10K now consistently with that shoe!
even though the tech may be considered "old", i still rely on my Peg 37 and 38. i prefer em over my Novablast2. i guess im a little bit of a traditional runner, preferring a more stiff/responsive shoe underfoot. and besides, those Pegs are workhorses, durable, and very versatile :)
Great video. The return policy from Nike just made it so tempting as a new runner. I was able to try so many different shoes without having to commit to one.
I’d prob recommend Nike Pegasus or Hoka Clifton. Both can likely handle slow and fast paces as well as long runs for beginners anyway. Plus both are always readily available and won’t break the bank. I think they both have frequent sales. Of course, the older Novoblast as he mentioned
Kof!!! i took your advice and got the clifton 8's.. WOW.. GREAT SHOE. i ran the Houston Marathon in the Clifton and i didn't feel anything until mile 16. Compared to my Nikes (I'm never wearing Nike again) in my Nike vaporfly i would feel the ground around mile 9. but the Clifton 8's?!?! Great shoe.
Good video to help newcomers to plan and have a better overview on their new purchase. Best advice as mentioned is to start running. What shoes to buy come later. Super happy with my decision, Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit (2019), Saucony Endorphin Speed (2020) and Brooks Hyperon Tempo (2021), which fit into all the various needs Speedwork, Cushioning, Training. Added Adidas Adios Pro 3 2 weeks ago, although I don’t do competitions.
I think it’s hard to beat the Glycerine either 19 or 20 depending on budget. New or restarting runners probably have a few extra pounds and max cushion should be a priority to help their joints ease back into running since lower leg pain is a common reason people stop after a few weeks.
When I first started running, a neighbor, who's a retired Marine, took me to a local running shop where they did a gait analysis. Turned out that adidas, brooks, saucony, were the best for me.
It was vomero 16 that got me back to running again. After that, I got floaride energy 3 from Reebok which was really light and fun shoe to run in (also not expensive like other brands). Vomero lasted around 250K to 300K and floatride still going strong at 350k.
I went to the local Saucony outlet and ended up with the Triumph 19 (daily/long runs), Kinvara 12 (shorter, speedier runs), Endorphin Pro (races of 5K+), and Xodus 10 (trail) for about $300. Total rotation! The Triumphs were so comfy, I bought another pair for my everyday, casual shoes.
Thanks I jus purchased the nova blast 2. So cheap here $130 NZD to go along with my puma nitro ii I recently bought for a sale price too. My first half marathon is in a couple months. Let’s go!
I was looking forward to your words about brooks Hyperion Tempo, I simply fell in love with those shoes, though I’m worried because in my country they aren’t sold, so In not able to try them on… I have Adidas Adios Pro, I loooove them, though I’d like to save‘em for competitions.
NovaBlast 3 hands down! It can do slow recovery speeds and can do faster work and does both as well as the other. Best overall useful and versatile road shoe I ever ran in IMO.
I do want to try the novablast! But the triumph 20 for me is exactly the same. I can do threshold right through to recovery runs and it excels at all of them
@@dbo4506 Finding that shoe that does well by you is always a huge win, with endless shoes coming out along with endless shoe reviews it's like where do you start and how do you find what you individually need with so many options and so many opinions. I'm just glad I found that ASICS Novablast 2 and 3 has worked and works even better now for me.
@@doublel22 Yes true to size for the NB3, with the metaspeed sky plus, and superblast I went down half a size and they fit very well having half sized down.
Thanks. I started running again after a 10 year break. I used to wear regular width now it appears all shoes are on the narrow side of things and the options are quite limited. Hopefully one day you can tackle that subject.
I have just got back into running after about 5 years off. I have been using an old pair of Asics trail scout shoes for the last 5 months and am about to either get a pair of New Balance 1080 or Asic Novablast 3.
If I had to choose one shoe, I'd go back to Marshalls in early 2020 and buy every pair of Adidas Solar Boost (2018 version) they had on sale for $30 and stick with that shoe. But I'm a heel striker at plodding jogging pace, and flatfoot midfoot striker at tempo pace. The Boost in the heel gets a lot of work under my feet. The only shoe I've tried in a store that appealed to me like the Solar Boost was the Saucony Triumph 20. It's on my list. Second choice, Nike Pegasus 39. And I probably should buy another pair or two while they're available. Not as cushy as the Solar Boost, but better all terrain outsole, a bit more midfoot padding to cushion against gravel. I would have picked the Under Armour Hovr Sonics as second, but UA just announced they're discontinuing the Bluetooth sensor and support for realtime feedback via the Map My Run app. That's a shame. It was a great option for new runners to establish a healthy running form and avoid injury. I've tried the Saucony Endorphin Pro and Speed and just didn't get along with them. Hated the Adidas SL20 - upper and fit were great, Lightstrike is an abomination. Atreyu base model was too wide for my narrow feet. Adidas Adizero Prime knit is okay on pavement or track but the Boost midsole is too thin for most longer runs. Hoka Mach 4 was oh-kay but nothing special. Ditto Brooks Ghost 15 - meh, don't see the appeal. Saucony Guide 15 was annoying, but I don't need an aggressively supportive stability shoe.
I just ordered the triumph 20 runshield version after trying on the regular version at my local running store. Hope they feel as good as they did in the store. I'm coming off a severe heel injury so hoping these will work.
My 1st brandnew running shoes was asics evoride 1 got them for $50 , so much love with this shoes. I can't love any other shoes coz i don't have more money to buy other shoes . 😁 By d way I've done sub 2 hours with this shoes for my 1st half marathon
I love Skechers Go Run Ride 10, mizuno wave Sky 6, Adidas pureboost, and some merrells for running un forest - merrell nova 2 and agility Peak 4. And also new balance more x 3 is very cool. But there are so meny good shoes - asics, topo, altra, craft, etc
Except the Torrent 2 all are very smart suggestions. Torrent 2 is a really dated and stiff option in 2023 for door to trail or easy trail. In Europe you could easy find the Novablast 3 on sale for about 90 dollars nowadays.
I'm looking for racing shoes to use for HIIT on the treadmill: cycles of high speed intervals followed by short recovery periods. 30 min-45 minute sessions, 3-4 times a week. I still quite haven't found what I'm looking for yet. So far I have been using the Mizuno Sayonara. They're OK, but it's not quite it. My search is still underway. FYI I'm 5,9', 155 pounds.
@@zzzdog321 Just because, at that time, novablast 2 where a cheaper and also good option. Today, after 6 months and 1100 km i’m ready to try the Novablast 3
I like max cushion shoes as I walk around daily and when I jog, which isn't often. I have somewhat flat feet so the new balance 1080 works great. Just got saucony tempest, another max cushion shoe. It is a tad narrower and has more of an arch support. Will see.
Love the content. I run almost everyday and the Hoka Torrent 2 is a great shoe on and off trails. I run an average of 40 miles a week and these shoes are great. I also have run Altra superior 5s in ultra runs and they are good as week but not as much so much cushion as the Hoka.
Great choices!! I just put 950km on my first pair of On Cloudstratus, which just seem to work really well as a daily trainer for my wider feet and bigger frame (6’5, about 200lbs). Just recently picked up another pair as well as some Nike Pegs and a pair of Novablast 3s in preparation for an upcoming sub 3h attempt at Stockholm on June 3rd. Currently looking at the Adios Pro 3s or Vaporflys for race day, but would love thoughts and suggestions!
If I could only recommended one pair it would be the Asics Novablast 1. These are good for tempo work, daily training, long runs and I have even used them for racing. I've ran a marathon in them
the sad part is many shoes are already discontinued. so the question should have been been rephrased by ending with the word “today” or “2023”., implying availability. then you can have a separate video where you can discuss the same topic but have access to all past shoes. if you could pick any shoe based on past experiences, which shoes would you pick and why?
Would love an updated shorts video in this style, been trying to find some for my first marathon that can hold gels but struggling so far. Going to try the terrex agravic shorts from Adidas but their phone holder is a bit small so might try a two piece set up with some running legging shorts with a phone holder and then some looser shorts above which can hold the gels
Check out the rabbit (runinrabbit) offerings. Ko races in their Speedster half tights which have two stretchy side pockets capable of holding almost all phones in cases and a rear zip pocket. I race in the women's version of those, called Leggy's, and don’t experience a bounce issue at all. Lots of gels can fit into the side pockets. If you’re looking for a super light shorter short, check out their Smashem's. The waistband is essentially like a built in Nathan belt-Entirely pockets all the way around. Both of these are 3 season items so probably not available right now in the dead of winter. I know Ko also like Path Project shorts as well, which probably have plenty of pockets.
I'd go with the Reebok Floatride Energy line. A fantastic and versatile shoe and is always on sale for between 50 and 70 dollars. Actually just picked up a pair of the FRE Adventure 4, the road to trail version, for 70 dollars. An even more versatile shoe for a great price.
I am trying to get the best value for money when buying shoes. Currently I got Glideride 3 for about 100$ that I use for long runs, Puma Velocity Nitro 2 as a daily trainer for about 50$ and Adidas Adios 6 for about a 90$ for faster sessions. Now I am looking for my first racing shoe and I saw Puma Deviate Nitro Elite Racer for about 110$-120$ online. Would you think that's a sensible choice for first racing shoe?
My first pair of 'expensive' shoes as a new runner was the Clifton 7. I absolutely loved them and have since bought the Clifton 8 once my old ones gave up the ghost. I must say though that I personally prefer the Rincon series. No clue why specifically, they just feel light, bouncy and right on my feet 🤷
When I picked up running again, the Rincon was my first shoe and I caught the shoe bug and kept trying to find something that worked for me better than the Rincon, but for some reason they just work the best for me. I do wish they lasted longer though..
@@ryanvilano oh, I thought that their short lifespan might just be my technique or weight (which was considerably more when I first bought them). I suppose that's sometimes the trade-off with lighter shoes? Would be curious if you found anything that felt similar but had a better lifespan!
Great recommendations! I agree - get last year's fantastic shoes at huge sale prices. I have to throw in one current model that is on sale right now. The OG colorways of the New Balance Fresh Foam More V4 can be had for $115 at Running Warehouse.
I’m getting more into running now that I am in college and am finding that a bunch of campaniles don’t make shoes in my size. I wear size 16US so it’s hard to find anything really. Wish they would make shoes a few sizes larger…
Also, last year's models in 2023 is waaaaay diff than last year's models when I started getting into running shoes precovid. A lot of small changes now. a lot of previous gen shoes arguably better than current gen as well.
I would have added another category..."stablity shoes"...lots of people pronate. And even for people that DON'T having a "stablity shoe" just helps us keep in the proper position and lessens the chance for an accident e.g. rolling the ankle....or developing pronation....
Hey, what is the yellow ring you wear? I have been looking for a comfortable ring for running so I don’t have to wear my wedding band that barely fits and would fly off!
If you had to start over again, how would you begin running in general again? I walk 3 miles total a day to and from work but I don’t know how to pick up running without injuring myself.
I’d start with a 5 minute brisk walk, then 10x (1min jog, 1min walk). Jog as slow as possible. Then 5 minute walk to cool down. Then every couple of sessions, increase to 6x (2min jog, 1min walk). Then 4x (3min jog, 1min walk). Supreme precision isn’t required, but the idea is to learn to run easy, learn to develop of habit of running, and then eventually build up to 30mm continuous jog.
No disrespect but I would have to slightly disagree with the "just go out running in whatever shoes you have" for beginners. A few years ago I tried to go running, and managed to keep it up for a good number of weeks, but in hindsight the shoes I was in where basically basketball lifestyle shoes and were incredibly heavy and inflexible. If i had started in the shoes i currently run in now I would have found it a lot more enjoyable and easier to keep up;. I agree with the principle of not having to go out and spend crazy amounts of money, but some shoes are really not suitable.
Love the channel man. Any suggestions on daily trainers for heavier runners? I’m 6’1” 225 and I find most shoes either too firm or I completely compress them and they’re mush.

Curious to know if you found the novablast 3 to be true to size?
@@doublel22 Yes true to size for the NB3, with the metaspeed sky plus, and superblast I went down half a size and they fit very well having half sized down.
I agree. Getting last year's shoes on sale is the best bang for the buck.
Thanks. I started running again after a 10 year break. I used to wear regular width now it appears all shoes are on the narrow side of things and the options are quite limited. Hopefully one day you can tackle that subject.
The Peg 35 was my first ever daily trainer after I started running. It has over 800KM on it and is still going strong. They seem to last forever.
I'm still using mine too! (Ignoring the 3 year running break 😂)
I agree. I’m actually surprised @Kofuzi doesn’t include the Nike Pegasus.
I have just got back into running after about 5 years off. I have been using an old pair of Asics trail scout shoes for the last 5 months
and am about to either get a pair of New Balance 1080 or Asic Novablast 3.
A lot has changed in the interim
@@kofuzi yes a lot i have gotten slow fat and lazy over the last 5 years lol
😁 By d way I've done sub 2 hours with this shoes for my 1st half marathon
this might be a good content to do in a yearly basis
Saucony endorphin shift for the roads, salomon speedcross 5 for the trails and maybe the speedgoat 5 as a hybrid sort of shoe
Velocity Nitro 2 or Floatride Energy 4 is plenty of shoe. Both are versatile, inexpensive, durable and comfy.
there are a lot of great places to start
This so true , look at last year best shoes , its save bucks !
New Runner -> Novablast 2 -> happy days ✅
Why not the novablast 3 ?
@@zzzdog321 Just because, at that time, novablast 2 where a cheaper and also good option. Today, after 6 months and 1100 km i’m ready to try the Novablast 3
I like max cushion shoes as I walk around daily and when I jog, which isn't often. I have somewhat flat feet so the new balance 1080 works great. Just got saucony tempest, another max cushion shoe. It is a tad narrower and has more of an arch support. Will see.
Running Warehouse has a couple colorways of the Adios Pro 3 for $175 as well...
I’d just grab the Glideride
Big up the Glideride 3!!!! Great shoe for cruising those miles
@@paulmulks all day bro 👊
Great value for 75eur on sale 👍🏼
Just ordered the Glide Ride3 for 96 euro off the Asics site💪
Would they work with an orthotic
I'd buy ONE shoe, the Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTX. This shoe can do it all for me. From long runs to superfast short stuff. Love it!
that's a really fun shoe
You're a giant for a sub 3 finisher.
I started with the Nike Lunaracer "yellow ones" I enjoyed them a lot.
every once in a while, I will see a pair of lunar racers in the wild. and I'm like, is that person a collector? or a hoarder?
@@kofuzi Probably both. I heard rumours of Lunaracer owners cannibalising other runners. Better watch out.
If I could only recommended one pair it would be the Asics Novablast 1. These are good for tempo work, daily training, long runs and I have even used them for racing. I've ran a marathon in them
it's a good one, if you can still find fresh pairs
What about the Mike Air Max 90 for running?
the sad part is many shoes are already discontinued. so the question should have been been rephrased by ending with the word “today” or “2023”., implying availability.
then you can have a separate video where you can discuss the same topic but have access to all past shoes. if you could pick any shoe based on past experiences, which shoes would you pick and why?
@@Martha-fluterunner thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately I'm UK based so can't get either brand
Altra Riviera 2 for me…
Zero drop have been a game changer for me!!!
Most stores will shove the Ghost to new runners, so definitely see if they try and offer alternatives
New Balance 1080 s worked very good for me, i have 3 pairs :)
Hey cousin Ko, great video to educate future Kofuzians but my question is what are your Top 5 shoes of all-time?
Would love a non budget version of this! Thank you love your content

Love my cliftons for daily runs. Torrent 2 or Peg trail 4 gortex for winter running?
Would be curious if you found anything that felt similar but had a better lifespan!
l'd just got clifton 8 last month. it is awesome
Great recommendations! I agree - get last year's fantastic shoes at huge sale prices. I have to throw in one current model that is on sale right now. The OG colorways of the New Balance Fresh Foam More V4 can be had for $115 at Running Warehouse.
that is incredibly good!
I’m getting more into running now that I am in college and am finding that a bunch of campaniles don’t make shoes in my size. I wear size 16US so it’s hard to find anything really. Wish they would make shoes a few sizes larger…
that is a tough size to find. which brands tend to have the most options for you?
@@kofuzi I find that new balance has a good selection fortunately. Nike is unfortunately out of the question as are Adidas and some Saucony models
So many options out there now to try to get a good deal on.
Also, last year's models in 2023 is waaaaay diff than last year's models when I started getting into running shoes precovid. A lot of small changes now. a lot of previous gen shoes arguably better than current gen as well.
I ended up picking up Adizero Boston 10 and Tekumi Seb 8 both for $186 from the Adidas outlet store 👍🏽
Thats a steal deal!
Recommend a shoe with a wide toe box because I hate the feeling of my toes smashed up together
topo cyclone 2. it's a workout/racing shoe
In my case, I'd stick to Saucony ( Endorphin speed, Ride 15, Kinvara) ASICS (Novablast, Tri Noosa) & Adidas (Takumi & Adizero Adios 7 & 8)
I’m really enjoying the Novablast 2 I got before Christmas for $50.
I would have added another category..."stablity shoes"...lots of people pronate. And even for people that DON'T having a "stablity shoe" just helps us keep in the proper position and lessens the chance for an accident e.g. rolling the ankle....or developing pronation....
I generally think stability shoes are over prescribed
Hey, what is the yellow ring you wear? I have been looking for a comfortable ring for running so I don’t have to wear my wedding band that barely fits and would fly off!
I was able to get the saucony triumph on sale for 100$ canadian. So far my favourite running shoe and the price was great.
Really nice
I agree with the principle of not having to go out and spend crazy amounts of money, but some shoes are really not suitable.
non elite runner, but elite youtuber 😀
Superb info
glad it was helpful!
Love the channel man. Any suggestions on daily trainers for heavier runners? I’m 6’1” 225 and I find most shoes either too firm or I completely compress them and they’re mush.
Check out this video I worked on with Wear Testers
