Great job. For my bunnies with black nails a flash light does not always reveal the quick so I guestimate where I need to trim and then gently apply pressure with the clippers to see if it is too tender (bunny will pull foot back). Then I have left a little mark and I know to trim closer to the tip. I also burrito but I sit on the floor just in case he startles.
I find that for really nervous or wiggly rabbits, you can swaddle them and place them belly-down in your lap and just file their nails with a regular nail file made for humans. It's a slower process, but a lot safer and less stressful for a rabbit.
Thank you very much bunny mom! You truly did what we requested. Trimming bunny nails is the biggest worry of mine. This is one of my favorite videos of yours. Very useful and with lots of love. See how that little buck sleeps in your arms, that is so soothing and calming to watch.
Awww what a gorgeous lil bun. It's great to see someone who really takes care of and loves their animals. On a side note, how often should you trim a rabbit's nails?
Hook's Hollands - Ohio Holland Lops What if ur bunz a outdoor one and has short and not sharp nails from digging and it past 1 - 2 months? Blizzard has short and not sharp nails.
Thank you so much! This help so much. Our little Norwegian Dwarf Cherub is just old enough for his first trim. Love the mesh idea. Now I feel more confident to do this.
Thank you so much! This was so helpful! It’s so much harder when my husband and I try to help each other cut her nails and do health checks. With your method, I finished trimming her nails and doing a thorough health check within minutes!
Love the tips :) especially the tulle material helps to see the nail and push back the fur. The receiving blanket just makes perfect sense. Thanks for posting and being such a great role model.
I just can't believe this.. that a bunny can be this calm! It's like a stuffed plushie toy! My bunny can never be this calm. I can't even trim her nails, we have to go to a doc. But I love her so much! Bunnies are the most precious wonderful animals.. so pure, so soft, aggrh love them! :)
That ending was SO relaxing! Idea for bunny parents with crappy eyesight: put an old pillow (or a towel covered pillow) on a table and puff it up around the bun to provide secure support. Use as many pillows as you need to raise the bunny to where you can safely see enough to trim. I use several down pillows that make a sort of snuggle cloud!
Thanks! We will look for the mesh fabric. When my husband trimmed our foster Flemish's nails and hit the quick, she was ok but he shied away from trimming bunny nails for a while. Will see if this makes it easier. :)
Usually when I trim my bunnies nails. I have my sister gently hold him down, while my mom is feeding him a treat. And while my sister holds him down she helps me look out, so I don’t go near the red ☺️☺️ very simple!
Thank you for this video, this really helped me with my baby girl,I think she likes it, she is a dwarf bunny so I have to get treats for dwarf bunnies.
If you ever feel like upgrading, the big dog clippers in that same style make things go incredibly fast. I have those exact cat nail clippers, and I lost them halfway through a trimming session and couldn't find cat clippers at the store, so I brought home the dog ones. I never realized how terrible those little things are! I did three feet so fast without so much as a flinch from my subject. And my rabbits are black mini rexes, so black nails all around. My rabbits are conditioned to put up with right side up clipping and health checks, but those expensive big clippers I thought I was stuck with are a real godsend and I'd bet they'd work with the rabbit upside down too. I think they were worth paying $7 for.
To elaborate, the little ones don't really fit you're hand, they actually kind of hurt after a while. They really like to fall open all the way, and the place you have to put the nail is TINY, and your hand can get in the way. With the big ones you just locate the quick and snip, the nail stays in position, they're sharp, and they're spring loaded so it's ready to snip again.
I need help, my rabbit just attacks me and her nails are so long I’ve tried the towel method and I’ve just about done the front paws With my others they just stand there and don’t mind it to much I don’t know what to do
i did ask my vet about the whole trancing and laying on the back thing, she's very specialized with rabbits and great. Extra education legally for rabbits. She said it all depends on the rabbit and should be done with vet supervision. Some rabbits are fine with it and others aren't.
It's really better to keep two females together. The males will fight when they reach maturity and then need to be neutered. Females bond easier, but It's best to keep a male and female pair together that is fixed. You will have the best luck with a male and female pair than a male and male pairing. The longest I've had males get along is 6 months and that was brother and brother. They also got along just fine with their father until they reached 9 months of age.
After male/female pairs, male/male are easiest to bond! you just want to make sure they’re both neutered, an un neutered bunny will be very territorial and they will fight :)
Rehana Jamil Only if they’re both neutered so they don’t attack each other (: also I know the requirement is 8 ft.² but I would recommend bigger for them! Also the age matters! If you’re getting two babies then they will get along fine!
My dad helps me with my rabbit nails he holds them while I clip the nails. One time we were taking them to the vet so we clipped the toe nails before we went. The first mini Rex we clipped had long front nails. But it seemed like her back nails had not grown anymore because I only clipped a little bit. It didn't bleed a lot as soon as I clipped it I went to go get the clotting powder and it had already stopped. so the bleeding really depend on how much you clip it back
Awesome video I’m gonna have to give this a try the mesh fabric is an awesome hack! Does this work well for pregnant does I have a couple of does in my rabbitry that are quite the grumpy mommies and hate to have their nails cut while they’re pregnant but it’s a must! Would love to see a video on tattooing and possibly some on how you get the bunnies ready for a show and what not! Keep the videos coming we love them they’ve been a huge help when we first got started with Holland’s!
I trim my does' nails right after they are bred so I don't have to trim them again until the babies are born. I do not tattoo my bunnies anymore since I don't show. I hated doing that to them, but I know it's necessary for those who show.
I bough a cute and tiny Holland lop and he has a long face now and he is big , not chubby like a Holland lop :( but he is an awesome bunny, so friendly :) :)
How do you get the bunny to snuggle like that?! My bunny doesn't want to be held and when I do have to hold him he runs from me for days afterward, like he doesn't trust me.
I am soooo happy you posted this tutorial! I have been hesitant when it comes to trimming my bunny's nails because he didn't come from a place where he was held a lot. I've had him about a month and he is warming up to me but still gets scared if he thinks you're going to pick him up. I'm worried he might kick and fall off my lap when I'm trying to trim his nails. Is there any way to calm his fears about being cradled or should I just stick to going to the vet every month???
How do your bunny stay on your lap like that mine are like 2 seconds and then there gone I want to cuddle with them like that to can you give me some tips
If I had been sitting on the floor, he would have likely hopped around. Sitting on a stool, chair, or bed can encourage your bunny to sit with you, at least for a while. :)
try the burrito method. it prevents them from twisting and kicking. I have 5 bunnies and I always clip their nails on their backs and never had a problem. some bunnies like to be fed treats during. Give him pets also. It should be fine.
We use the song soft kitty warm kitty, but change it to bunny. Yes we sing to our bunny,he calms down after his paws stop twitching,it is usually ok to do this. Its best to move quickly so as not to stress him or her out. We alway put our bunny on his back. he knows what is going on. I keep super glue handy. Its best to locate the quick then slide the clippers back. I use a one two method to trim his nails. by just gently pushing the sissors together if you are anywhere near the wuick, bunny will move. So first time is just pressure, then second time is a full clip. I have hit the quick mabe three times. It really upsets them but a quick dab of glue stops the bleeding instantly. My wife usually holds Mr. Spock singing soft bunny and stroking his head. Bunnys will go into a "State" on their back. If Spock gets too upset,or struggles,we abort the subject. Its best to come back again the next day. Ours usually tolerates this once a month is when we do ours. Keeping a ceramic tile in a corner of their cage to scratch on helps bunny maintain their own nails too. Use an unglazed tile or a red kitchen tile works best.
When I trim my lil girls nails she tends to hate the nail clippers but then after she realizes what in doing she calms down but rn shes molting alot it's her 3rd year being with me I had her from a baby.
I agree, having teeth constantly trimmed is not fun. My little Kuri-chan has the really nasty detal problems I mentioned before (teeth growing deeper into the jaw and head), and we're going to see the vet every 2-3 weeks for 8+ months now.
Thanks for posting more often I was starting to get worried. 😓😓 Also my holland lop ear bunnie is 4 months old. Also I tried to check my bunnies teeth like you said but it kept jumping any ideas?
New bunny mommy here🙋🏻♀️ love your channel, lots of great information. I am so scared to clip my buns nails as he doesn’t seem to like me picking him up, or at least the way I pick him up??? I lift him from his stomach and then put my other hand under his back feet. Anyways, I thought it was bad to put a bunny on its back? All of this information out there and a lot of people saying different things. Like this for example, is this method good for a squiggly bunny?
When it comes to trimming nails, you need to get it done however you are able and still keep the bunny secure and as calm as possible. I suggest getting someone to help you and finding the best position to hold your bunny. It only takes a couple minutes, and with gentle petting and a treat afterwards, it can be tolerable for the bunny.
What do you do about grooming? Mine seem to be ingesting hair..I find it in their poos sometimes connected? I can’t find a brush that removes much hair
Lauren Lockridge I found a cat mitten with the nubbys helps. lightly wet the fur first. Oh,regular rubber gloves( not kitchen gloves, more examination room style) and lighly wet the fur can do the job. I use a mushdash come works too. it has finer close tines. A longer trimming comb will do the same. hold the brush at a slight angle till you feel the come slightly pulling on the fur, thats the purfect angle to remove the loose fur. You dont want to pull ,pull just a slight resistance. Change the angle more if needed.
Actually you just put his favourite cloth on the table and put the bunny on top. Hold him a bit close to your body and the job will be easily done. No need to turn him on his back this will cause unnecessary stress. I use only 5mins to do my first trim with my boy.
Not trying to be bossy but I would recommend the howcast video on how to trim nails. They make it seem really easy and maybe you'd prefer the method over the one you have now since you have to put the bunny on its back. Again not trying to sound controlling just an idea.
oh thanks for this, it doesnt seem too difficult, do you have any tips on cleaning /trimming a bunnies fur round their bum?! One of my bunnies had problems with the fur being too thick there,I`d have to take him to the vet...I did clean his fur a couple of times in shallow water, but my rabbits didnt like this ....
I've only ever had one bunny get a thick fur clump around his bottom, and I trimmed it carefully with scissors. You could try a sponge bath on his bottom if needed to loosen any poop clumps, but fur it trickier.
Google "rabbit tonic immobility" and you'll see what I mean. I've never had this happen, but a lot of people freak out when they see someone put a bunny on its back.
I forgot to mention about applying pressure to test where the quick might be for darker nails. Thanks for adding that! :)
Hello, My name is Casey and I live in Allentown, PA.. Do u know of any close Holland breeders in PA?
Close to Allentown?
Erica Kauffman I love bunnyies
I thought bunny can’t lying on his back
I find that for really nervous or wiggly rabbits, you can swaddle them and place them belly-down in your lap and just file their nails with a regular nail file made for humans. It's a slower process, but a lot safer and less stressful for a rabbit.

Awww what a gorgeous lil bun. It's great to see someone who really takes care of and loves their animals. On a side note,
how often should you trim a rabbit's nails?
Thanks. About every 1-2 months or when they scratch you. :)
Hook's Hollands - Ohio Holland Lops

He is so cute and yes, he is such a good boy. Way to go little guy!
As my rabbit got older they got really chill about me doing there nails. They relax now.
That mesh idea is BRILLIANT.
Thanks so much.
Luckily I have a helper with this.
Wow! He is such a cutie little bunny. This video is so relaxing toward the end. I find petting bunnies so therapeutic. Ideal to watch before bed. 🐇
I love all your bunnies and a Happy New year 2021
I just can't believe this.. that a bunny can be this calm! It's like a stuffed plushie toy! My bunny can never be this calm. I can't even trim her nails, we have to go to a doc.

Wow, what an awesome video. This was very useful as we needed to clip our Lop's ears for the first time!
Glad it was helpful!

Great video., Thanks. (I almost fell asleep too. Ha, ha)
I need help, my rabbit just attacks me and her nails are so long
I’ve tried the towel method and I’ve just about done the front paws
With my others they just stand there and don’t mind it to much
I don’t know what to do
Pay the vet to do it!
@@JohnnyUtah-71 Yes! And it is fairly cheap :)
i love your channel

Thank you so much I really wanted to see this video because I am getting two rabbits on the next Saturday and can we keep two male rabbits together?
Rehana Jamil it depends if they are siblings or introduced at a joint age.
It's really better to keep two females together. The males will fight when they reach maturity and then need to be neutered. Rehana Jamil i wouldn’t recommend it - how did it go for you? :)
Thank you for this video, the same method works well on cats too, although they prefer cat treats to parsley and oats...lol
This helped a lot thank you so much!!!! ☺️❤️
Yes 2 hooks hollands in 2 days 😃
Could not have done my buns nails without this :) great video
My dad helps me with my rabbit nails he holds them while I clip the nails. One time we were taking them to the vet so we clipped the toe nails before we went. Great to know this 👍👍👍
I have a Holland lop!!
They’re so well behaved
Is there a way to do this without trancing the rabbit? I heard it puts them into shock and can really stress them out.
I bough a cute and tiny Holland lop and he has a long face now and he is big , not chubby like a Holland lop :( but he is an awesome bunny, so friendly :) :)
I use water and my fingers to get the fur back and I also use a flashlight
How do you get the bunny to snuggle like that?! My bunny doesn't want to be held and when I do have to hold him he runs from me for days afterward, like he doesn't trust me.
He is so cute 😍#bunny
Wow so nice video
🐰+🌯=BUNNY BURITO!!!!
omg its so cute
Can you give bunnies cbd oil like kind for dogs ?
I am soooo happy you posted this tutorial! I have been hesitant when it comes to trimming my bunny's nails because he didn't come from a place where he was held a lot. I've had him about a month and he is warming up to me but still gets scared if he thinks you're going to pick him up. I'm worried he might kick and fall off my lap when I'm trying to trim his nails. poor baby, but he's a good lil boi!
I have a senior buck that don't want to flip its back, what should I do???he will kick me,jump then dump at me and run away..what should I do?
You can't put rabbits on their backs it sends them into a trance and it's kinda dangerous :/ I recommend you try a different way to hold them
try the burrito method. it prevents them from twisting and kicking. I have 5 bunnies and I always clip their nails on their backs and never had a problem. some bunnies like to be fed treats during. Give him pets also. It should be fine.
I never have to trim my rabbits nails as they both play outside (secured area). They hop around on the patio and that keeps their nails a good size!
he's so small!!!
Tough with more one bunny. One bunny nail clipping wasn't bad with lops.
I'm in love with Jack. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Wait that bunny LOOKS just like mine!
We use the song soft kitty warm kitty, but change it to bunny. Yes we sing to our bunny,he calms down after his paws stop twitching,it is usually ok to do this. My bunny ,3 months old, not allow me to trim his nail. I have difficulty in holding him like u. Maybe 10 second , he want to run away.
Thanks for posting more often I was starting to get worried. 😓😓 Also my holland lop ear bunnie is 4 months old. Also I tried to check my bunnies teeth like you said but it kept jumping any ideas?
Make a tight little bunny burrito and keep trying to look at your bunny's teeth. :)
Hook's Hollands - Ohio Holland Lops thanks
Brooklyn Dixon We have the same issue. Dont be afraid to pull up on buns cheeks to gain acess to those bunny teeth. They need to be checked.
I like the Hairbuster brush as well as digestive tablets from Sherwood (ordered from their website or Amazon).
That does not work for hyper scared rabbits.
When will your waiting list open again?? 🥺🥰
When I have new babies born, I will likely open the list up. I only have a handful of litters per year now that I've downsized.
my bunny has Sharp nails and he hates being picked up what can i do to cut hes nails?
Great no one answered your question. I have the same.
Put an open box and he'll get in then pick the box into a high surface cut them without turning him around. Distract with pellets or treats
I often like to use my dogs nail grinder
Not trying to be bossy but I would recommend the howcast video on how to trim nails. They make it seem really easy and maybe you'd prefer the method over the one you have now since you have to put the bunny on its back. Again not trying to sound controlling just an idea.
in honor of my dad will like this video just for the ohio state shirt :) lol
What breed is he? I know holland lop but what color?
Do you sell bunnies? Cause I would love.to buy one!
oh thanks for this, it doesnt seem too difficult, do you have any tips on cleaning /trimming a bunnies fur round their bum?! One of my bunnies had problems with the fur being too thick there,I`d have to take him to the vet...I did clean his fur a couple of times in shallow water, but my rabbits didnt like this ....

Could you explain the concern about bunnies being on their backs? Thanks!
Google "rabbit tonic immobility" and you'll see what I mean. I've never had this happen, but a lot of people freak out when they see someone put a bunny on its back.
Thank you so much. I'll look into this further because the 'cons' are considerable if they manifest themselves at all. Love your babies!!
