The two things you need to make sure of, a thermal fit between your barrel and the upper, plus a nice tight fit between your upper and lower. Some people think that a billet upper and lower is better than a forged one. Well, you can have both, they can CNC "billet" from a forged ingot then you have both. Like on a barrel, you can have a CMV 4140, CMV 4150 or you can Cold Hammer Forge the same CMV barrels making them even tougher. It's the same with aluminum, you can heat treat it and forge it.
This series has been great. I hope you can do more intermediate level vids and follow that up with advanced level info. You guys are doing a great job. 👍🏼👍🏼
It's not so much left handed, but left eyed, I literally cannot even see sights shooting right shoulder but my handgun us right side. Idk my 2 cyclop cents
@abstractapproach634 same hear, 1st recruiter couldn't believe it was possible to be left eyed and not left handed. 2nd saw mt asvb score and didn't cair, he would put forth the nessasary effort to get a waver for my reattached right index finger as it was not my trigger finger and wouldn't interfere.
From the creator himself Eugene Stoner, the forward assist is a psychological component and serves no actual purpose byeond that. He even submitted designs that did not have them during development/selection. The government was well aware of this at the time and insisted that they wanted the forward asssit as it gave the users more confidence in the rifle if they thought there was recourse for potential malfunctions. Thats the history and its why some of you think you need one. The power of suggestion.
Hitting the forward assist is step 1 of the malfunction process it work for me more than one time during active duty, when every round counts such as qualifying or combat. It will pulverize sand preventing the bolt from going into battery. With out it I'd have to shotgun it and pick out the sand wile being shot at. playing for keeps function trumps pyops.
@@daviddroescher I understand that's how you feel but it doesn't change reality. The shape of the bcg on the ejection port side is concave and allows the user to use their thumb to force the bolt into battery if it fails to lock. During the Vietnam war the US rounds fired to enemy KIA was 10,000:1. Your "Every round counts" argument only matters to you in the moment. In reality both you and your equipment are expendable assets. The government that paid the lowest bid to have these designs implemented doesn't care if either of you make it home.
@TheReaganator you arguments for the A2 3 round burst, over the A1 full auto is valid. Yes, overwhelming numbers has been valid sence the time of the sword. It worked out for Russias every man got 3 rounds and 5man got a rifle. You are 100% right about the bean counters ,Life is cheap. But to me I only have me and the rest of my team to worry about, the rest as you put it where cannon fotter taking the heat off my team. If the 1 in10k that counts was a partial in battery that "thumb hole" will not allow enough force ( oiled skin is traction limited) to crunch a grain of sand kicked up by the 50 firing over you. Also 40 targets with 40 rounds dose not equate to the 1 in 10k, no return fire from the plastic, but the button allows me to have my 214 say m16 expert

The mechanical properties of Billet and Forged 7075-T6 are the same, shear, tensile, ultimate yield and elongation. The most important attribute of billet vs. forged is that billet has an aligned grain structure, eg. the grain all runs in the same direction. Thus making it more stable. This is why levels, for example or other items requiring stability, are made of a billet (extruded) material. They stay straighter and any shock returns the material to the as formed condition. Forged is popular because it can get you to a near net shape and thus your "buy to fly" ratio is better with forged, less machining time (outer surfaces can be left unmachined and less material used I'll take a billed 7075-T6 billet over forged every day of the week.
Actually. Enjoying right side charging AR platform forged. Good for scoped setup. The only tip would be to have spare BCG as a rear charger won't interchange.
So when it comes to the forward assist i think i will have one please? You never know when your out and about ,hunting or just hiking or camping and a bear or other large predator will come up on you? You shoot a deer and theres a grizzly not to far away? Or maybe you just dont go out in the wild much anymore? But then again thats the inner city too so...... Forward assist please and thank you!!! Semper Fortis
FWIW, Kyle Rittenhouse stated that he had to use his forward assist to chamber a round that did not fire and it saved his life from a man approaching him with a handgun. 🤷♂ All of my 6 AR rifles have the Forward Assist and the brass deflector. At the range I use a Caldwell brass catcher on my rifles. I handload ammunition, so I want to save the brass cases.
I'm right headed, but shoot left. Yep, my Drill Instructor at Fort Polk back in '72 advised South Paws to button the top button of their fatigues while shooting. I'm not sure they even had brass deflectors on M-16's back then. I will say, I only forgot to button my top button once.
Be in the dirt in a fire fight with guy next to you on full auto and his brass is going down you collar I promise you you will leave cover to get away from it
The dust cover cut not lining up with the lower in milspecs bugs the heck outta me. Some have solved this, but they still really only line up with there own lowers. Why can't we just get a company cut that upper to meet with the lower on the big 3?
What is the difference between billit and standard? Are they not both machined from a solid block, or is standard machined from multiple pices and welded together? What you described as forged ( and it being the cheper option ) sounds like stamped . (Only enough pressure to get the rough shape ,not restructure the crystal latis structure) Maby a pice of forged billit is where the extra incentive for higher price comes from
An upper receiver doesn't take anything anywhere near that amount of pressure lol 🤣 The pressure is all inside the barrel ding-a-ling and gas tube lol very minimum pressure inside the actual receiver d****** lol 🤣
Oh boy, human slip of the tongue. Nice catch! 💪 Thanks for sharing your expertise here in this department & keeping us sharp. Hopefully that little bit didn't ruin the information validity for the entire video or 17-part series. 👍
Thanks for the video 👏🏼👍! How can you tell which aluminum is used and if it’s billet or forged? I don’t trust ANY manufacturers since so much that is junk is just Chinese knockoffs 😉…
Really just trying to find a video that talks about which upper receiver actually is the best. Vest meaning things like tightest, machining qualities, and specifications. Also meaning which one is overall best for accuracy and rigidity. Wish I could just find that video.
I think we'd all love to find that video! But...in reality the answer just isn't that simple. Sure, there could be manufacturers that some could point at and say that they seem to be the "best" built... But "Best" for what? What's best for one guy, his mission, his shooting style, his shooting goals, etc... is likely not going to be the "best" for the next guy. I would be weary of those who recommend the easy answer, which is usually based on brand name and a high price.
@@At3tactical Right. A great example that pops into my head are BCM uppers. They're great if you're building an SPR type build because they have an undersized ID on their barrel extension port. You interference fit the barrel and you gain a lot of free accuracy by doing so. They're a complete waste on 10.5" builds because needing to interference fit the barrel makes your life harder for no appreciable gain, you're not shooting a 10.5" at 600 yards.

Excellent video! Very informative and well spoken.
Forward assist also for when a quiet situation calls for stealth.. slowly charge that weapon instead of letting the bolt slam shut, loudly.
You can do the same thing without one, just push on the charging handle

I think uppers and lowers are personal preferences because they do not fail if properly manufactured.

Billet are more expensive due primarily to the extra machine time. Forged are much faster to produce, thus typically less expensive.
@@At3tactical how about the difference between standard and billit?
Is standard made from extruded block ( single uninterrupted pice =billit)?

If I put a pop up front site on a drop in hand rail, will it stay true. Or would a free floating rail stay truer?
