I wanted to reflect on my sports card journey as a collector, flipper, and investor. 5 mistakes I made as a sports card collector, sports card flipper, or a sports card investor. At the end of the day I advise all of you to become sports card collectors as its the path to a better experience in sports cards.

Good advice.
I'm 45, and I got back into collecting earlier this year after not buying a pack since 2002. I was overwhelmed, and bought into breaks and bought singles because I HAD to win the whatnot auction. I now have calmed down and got back to buying nfl and nba singles for my PC. I'll still buy an occasional blaster of nba or nfl prizm, or even baseball. I glad to be back to collecting. Definitely enjoy your videos and your insight on the hobby. It's a refreshing take, and it's appreciated.
Good video. For me, the best advice/mistake to avoid I can give is for people to collect what they like and don't let others dictate what is/isn't a good card. The internet is full of people ready to hype up the $250+ cards. It's ok to pull a $10 card and think it is the best thing ever even if someone else would think it is mediocre at best. I spent way too many years as a collector letting outside factors influence me.

Got back into the hobby and took some chances on big rookies and buying low. Last year, I sold those at an all-time high and used the $$ to buy land on the lake. Life is good. 😊
Great video. I'd love to start selling myself but just building up the capital. Anyways, there are a good amount of content creators / influencers out there, but you are one of the very few who are genuine and have a love of the hobby and the sports involved with the cards. I have my select PC players who are current and some who are retired but I'm always looking into something different or one reason or another. I have cards that I love that I recently picked up for under $5. I don't think I've spent over $70 on a card yet. I feel bad for the people who are spending beyond their means just to keep up with a few others that make videos on this platform. I've never bought a box or done a break and buying singles will always be the way to go in my opinion. Kepp up these types of shooting the breeze type of videos are I'll keep watching and supporting. I'm also hoping to get to a few shows outside of my area but that's not in the cards at the moment. Best of luck going to Japan. That is #1 on my bucket list of countries to visit.
Great advice. Box prices are so out of touch with reality. Breaks are a lottery on top of a lottery. Buying lots and piecing them out, keeping some, and going through value boxes, are the only things that are sustainable to me. Hope to see you in Toronto!
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the hobby. I am still building my PC, favorite player is Doug Flutie I got to go watch him play in the 90s when he was with Toronto Argonauts. Went with my dad and it was my first game ever! I am still Trying to find His card in a Toronto Argonauts Jersey. I have picked up so many of his cards from other years but that one card would be epic for my collection. Just wanted to share a bit of my story. Thanks for all you do and I would love to buy from you but sadly I live in Canada and I know it is expensive to ship here. Keep up the amazing content.
My biggest mistake is buying cards saying I’m gonna flip them then not bringing myself to be able to flip them therefore I’m basically a collector and have way too many cards but yet can’t have too many cards.
So true. I find myself buying things because they are great deals and "flippable" but then I just end up with too many to manage and ultimately I'm just collecting more than selling. After starting this past January, I have a few hundred cards - also sold a few hundred but still I'll never be down to single digits of inventory because there's always something to buy

I just got back into the hobby and got into breakers… that’s gotten expensive and old quick. I think I’m going back to buying for my pc… thanks for this vid!!
Noticed that you mentioned that there might be a card show in Japan! Could I check where/when this might be? I'm from Asia and would totally travel to Japan for the chance to meet you and also experience being at a card show!
I learned my lesson about breaks very early on. I buy all singles pretty much - may buy 1 box at the start of a release...Buy what you want is the best tip you could give in this hobby.
My opinion anyway.
I am in Australia, and collect Australian sports and Pokemon, so it's a little different here - but it's still applicable.

I’d reccomend don’t get intimidated about not having crazy cards. Make a budget of how much you wanna spend,
And then also focus on picking up a PC Card because that’s the best part. The community will take care of ya

I collect my favorite players, that fit into my budget. It is as simple as that. Card collecting can get out of control financially,....if you let it. Stay within (your) price range.
One thing thats kinda hard for me is none of my friends are interested in sports cards
thats why u meet us in the hobby and we become your new best friends :D

With the premium that I found Breakers are charging this weekend, I'm quickly back to only buying what I choose! Just some quick math a suggested $179/team x 29 is clearing close to $2 grand per case on Topps Tribute, if not more being some go well above. Open 6 cases and make 10 grand off the community for a few hours is ruff to see. Sure the community likes to support but it could be much more fair!!

I agree with you. Buy what you want, but people hop they can get into a break for $20 and hit a $200 card
fair enough. at the end of the day i think people get burnt on their breaks a bit and transition to singles eventually
I just focus on /1 /5 or /10, focus on rookies, who know one of the rookies might make into top players in the future.
One big mistake I made was buying psa baseball without researching bought a psa 10 for 30 it last sold for 12 dollars

Im a natural collector. I collected baseball cards and coins in the 1970's. I have been in and out of both spaces multiple times. I came back to cards about five months ago. Grift exists in hobbys no way around it. Live breaks struck me as toxic from the word go. Ultimately it has to die down. So much money turned to dust. Breakers are bullys - worse than influencers. Fanatics Live will be the kiss of death on that front. Im not doom and gloom. The hobby will thrive but it needs a more wholesome holistic world view.

I ripped a lot of 2014-15 prizm chasing Joel Embiid and ended up with TJ “Bubble” Warren color and Autos.
Then the 2020 bubble struck and TJs prizm rcs blew up to over $100 for a ungraded prizms.
I held on hoping he would explode the next season… 🤦🏻♂️
I took a hit on Zion as well

Spent too much money on breaks when I got into cards. Loved the gambling of it all. Now I just buy Arvydas Sabonis or other Blazers from my childhood. Such a better feeling.

Love the channel and realism/honesty. I just got back into the hobby at the end of 2023 and my biggest mistake was buying random blasters across the MLB, NBA, and NFL without doing any research on what's current and which sets have designs that I would like.

i personally only join breaks for PC items like the braves I PC anything braves and if I am able to get into a case break which is cheaper than buying a full box most of the time

There is almost a bullying aspect to breaks. The leaders in this space have created a milieu that is like drug dealing where as a "user" you are made to feel top tier until you quit using. Imo i think breakers should be challenged. Breaking won't last forever but it will last for a while. It is a horribly bad deal for the average consumer. Breakers are making way too much money for the service they provide.

Today I made myself calculate how much I've spent on whatnot. Let's just say I could of bought a 1000 dollar hobby box of prizm and got way more worth than I've spent on breaks. It hurt.

If you see it and it's in your budget buy it has been me and my dad's regrets in Dallas
Biggest mistake I’ve made is buying slabs under $50. I know there’s a market for them. But me personally, sell them so slow it’s not worth it to me. I have the names but not the cards. Corbin, shohei, ja, wemby, CJ, Richardson. Most ppl really buying cards are ppl flipping, they want the “bigger” cards 100-500 dollars. I’m sitting on a stack of smaller slabs I’ll have to sell cheap sooner or later.
respect for realizing what will work and wont work. i think auto rookies in that 25-120 range are still really cool
Imo those are good. You just need a variety of prices, and if you sell on eBay for example, if you have it priced right it will sell.
Kenny Pickett is only in his 3rd year. Still plenty of time to hone his skills. I won’t call him a bust yet. Mac jones trey lance on the other hand will most likely stay busts. Hope their new teams can find a way to utilize them better

@mojo_sports yeppers got into that around '95. Started collecting in 85 when I started playing sports. Local police in Michigan handed out baseball cards in '86.

My first mistake is investing in some Wander Franco rookie cards, my second was probably the trade I made, I traded a 1982 Topps Cal Ripken Jr rookie card for a 1993 Topps Frank Thomas pre production card.

Most of you card influencers set off a false notion with loaded boxes and pushed these narratives.
The biggest mistake I've made was "investing" in LeBron James because MAGA hates him for ANYTHING he does/did and unfortunately, there are a lot MAGA in the hobby! They bring his value down! Aloha 🤙🏾 🏄🏾 🤞🏾
