    Unemployment was stably low when both corporate tax rates and union participation were at their highest in the US. It is a broad correlation as far as I know, but I believe there are elements of causation that could be sussed out and used to improve the status quo.

    • @Dorian_sapiens
      @Dorian_sapiens 2 дні тому +2

      I agree there was causation, and I think it worked approximately like this: high corporate tax rates (and high personal income tax rates) forced businesses to invest their revenue in growing their businesses in slow and steady ways. They couldn't just focus on quarterly earnings and squeeze cash out of their businesses in the form of CEO bonuses and short-term shareholder profits, because money in these forms was highly taxed. It was more profitable, over the long term, to expand their work forces and increase worker compensation, because these things grow the business and yield increased profits over time
      As for high union participation: the organized working class was in a strong position to hold owners' feet to the fire, keeping them from giving up on the slow-and-steady, long-term strategy outlined above. Short-term cash grabs are always more appealing, but the workers had leverage and used it to protect both themselves and the economy as a whole. Now, with unions hollowed out and other working-class organizations comparatively weak, there's nothing stopping big business owners from slashing and burning the economy each quarter to drain a few trillion extra dollars into their personal bank accounts.
      The problem with all this is, even if it were possible to restore the balance of that previous era, that would only restart the cycle. Businesses would eventually go back to their plundering ways again, and we'd have to restore the balance again, then they'd wreck the balance again, then we'd have to restore it again, ad infinitum. This is because the business owners have the state's authority at their disposal. They can and do use cops and soldiers to break strikes; they can and do use schools and news rooms to spread anti-worker propaganda; they can and do use lawmakers and courts to hinder our efforts to build working-class power. This is why so-called liberal democracies are actually "dictatorships of the bourgeoisie".
      The only way off the never-ending cycle of boom and bust is for the working class to overthrow the bourgeois dictatorships and form new states in which they, the workers, have the power to control the economy to their advantage, instead of to the advantage of the big business owners.

    noooo...china would be paying that tariffs for the privilege of selling to americans to earn the mighty dollar...so, a tariff is just like a discount for americans...trump should impose 100% tariff, which would mean that americans pay nothing! free! better yet, 200%…china would pay americans to buy their goods! 👍👏😁

    It's Tarrif-ying.
    Hope he knows what to do. He has the business knowledge. He knows America's economy is in critical condition that is close to society breaking down where skilled professionals are homeless for years in Connecticut.
    The myth in Connecticut is an unusual situation.
    There are tons of jobs open, but businesses are refusing to fill them! Tons of job openings but not an available job at all whatsoever anywhere.only one checkout line open when 10 are needed. Store service terrible and people desperately needing jobs but the businesses that desperately need help refuse to hire help.
    There needs to be government intervention with this. This is the core of the economic destruction.
    People are dying from it.

    There are just too many people in the world. We all (8+ Billion) can't live a middle class life!! The Planet can not sustain it, which is why SO MANY people live in poverty and die at a young age in poverty. The rich are able to take advantage of this fact!!! Us aginst them (them being anyone else other than the rich as a class.) People dream of being rich so they do not take from someone they hope to become!!
    Yet there is a huge push saying that there is not enough people in the world and that there is a huge population collapse taking place and societies with low numbers and birth rates will disappear. (Laughable 😅)

      This is a very uninformed comment.
      There is a thing called, "free trade agreement." Trump 1.0 violated NSFTA, which sparked the retaliation.
      Every country?
      Hong Kong is a free port. No tax on imported goods from any country. Yet Trump included Hong Kong as part of China in 2018. It means the US is dumping goods on Hong Kong while taxing Hong Kong goods. All that f**king American trash...
