Yes, go for it ! My advice would be 1: learn the notes on the strings ( if you don't already know), then 2: learn what makes up a major scale ,write out all those scales and learn those chords. That is a great foundation and will be the basis for everything else (theory wise) you learn from there. Good luck.
To all those “late starters”... I salute you! Age probably gives an advantage in that you probably have more patience. The guitar has a big initial learning curve because it’s physically quite demanding but once you get past that, you can make a lot of progress quickly.
@@BreatheRC I assumed that he was referring to Adam Neely's video about the Harmonic Style of 18th Century European music ;) and thus he would have been part of the Adam Neely gang or fan base haha!
@@MarySpender Caught this video 23 minutes before my local midnight on January 1st, 2021. O-kay. Fiiiine. 😅 When even @TomoFujitaMusic is here, I'll play (along on my guitar). Just for January, mind. Happy new year, Mary and Tomo.
I spent all of 2020 trying to practice and get better, even started lessons despite being a musician for 20 years but finally just dropped it all. Realized it's OK to have the relationship with my instrument that I do. I don't need to do what everyone else does. As long as I get better today than I was yesterday, as long as there is some progress and some learning that's enough for me.
I've nominated you to Crimson Guitars to be invited to build one of their kit guitars for the Great Guitar Build Off 2021. Or to be a judge for the competition.
This is 2nd vid of yours to which I have listened. Neither one has been a music video - I have not heard you play a lick yet. Wanted you to know I just subscribed and rang the "All" bell for no other reason than that you are just flat out the most dang pleasant person I've heard speak since I can remember. It is such a relief to listen to someone express themselves without ranting & raving about being offended by some group with which they disagree. Thank you. I look forward to hearing you more in the days ahead. All the best from McKinney, Texas
Mary ... I can't think of a better way to practice every day than spending it with you !!! You inspire me ... I can't thank you enough. your #1 fan Michael
Yep, I am totally on board with this idea of practicing every day, even if just for 15min. I'm unfortunately one of those who does long practices than skips days, mostly because I'm super busy with work, UA-cam, private lessons and family. It's sometimes very hard to find time. But yeah, let's do this, 15min really shouldn't be a problem! PS. Love the glasses.
I rationalize my practice binges, though I know playing until painful isn't ideal. "But after 9hrs I surprise myself with what I can do... Jaco style 16th note bass funk? Got it!"
And there was me, thinking you were going to do one of those New Year's Day swim-in-the-somewhat-cold-sea things ... Good luck with the Daily Spendings!
Hi Mary. Been watching your vids on and off for about a year. This one has kicked me in the arse and got my back into daily practice. I bought a guitar in the summer to teach myself to play, but the multiple lockdowns and general low energy of 2021 had me stop. Now you have given me the incentive to get back at it again. Thank you and I look forward to your daily videos. Also finally hit the Sub button!
If you're watching this then you have some time ... ha! Called out by Mary Spender on the second day od 2021 ... love it and love you, Mary ... will be onboard and rooting for you through this effort ... and I promise to go sit down at my drums each day this January, when I see your video drop/ notification(s) ... very best to you ... cheers!
2 minutes in and you have given me exactly what I need this year : a practice buddy. Someone who can remind me every day that I should do 15 minutes on my guitar, someone who can teach me new things, someone who can inspire me to be a better singer songwriter. This is an amazing idea Mary and I am with you 100%!! My notifications are turned on! I can't wait 🥰
I am SO up for this! Only ‘found’ you the other day through the Paul Davids improv video, which was great. I’ve (kind of) got in to a daily routine during lockdown where I do a 30 minute guitar workout and then a song or something particular I want to learn or improve. I manage most days, and now I have a conscience (accountability tracker) in this show.... hope you run on past January.
I made comment sometime ago about microphone choice/placement on vlogs, and just noticed that you have the Shure off to the side - you sound clear, no "room" issue. Well done!
I love that you're rocking a Bros. Landreth shirt!!!! Those guys are AMAZING! I'm excited for your new project! You always make me smile... Your vibes are just infectious and wonderful!!!!
You know what! Ima follow along with you! Starting with this video and continuing your future upload! I'm tired of giving excuses for not playing guitar well. I'm very excited about this journey!❤
As usual, your new approach is perfect and welcomed. I have been practicing and learning the things I should have learned ages ago. This was my way to redeem that time on my hands by taking every chance to have the guitar in my hands. So, I am with you: practice every day! 2021, here we come!
The fact that you have compiled enough “Guitar Stories” to share one with us every day, or almost every day, is a testament to what a great and wonderful idea it was (and is). Carry on, Mary!
I couldn't mute you if I wanted to. Mean to much to me. As to practice, getting back to it as much as my hands let me. VERY excited about a daily dose of Mary Spender in my life!
I'll do it. You are now the ONLY youtuber who I have hit the bell for. With a commitment in mind: I have a habit of putting work first and procrastinating on personal needs, so this year I'm going to do SOMETHING to make personal progress every day. I will play my guitar every day.
What a fantastic idea! I did something similar in October, IE 'Beatober', tried releasing a little music every day in October. I only did 14, but still pretty great, it's oddly motivating working within constraints and getting accustomed to 'delivering' frequently.
Mary- you seem so nice and genuine- like a "real" person. Your speaking voice is amazing, and you are easy on the eyes. TV networks should be fighting with each other to be the one to give you a prime time show. I hope that you don't change your style when you become one the biggest stars in the world.
This is such a great idea Mary... I'm in- for 2021- even if it's just 5 minutes- you've given me the idea to apply this to all the items I want to accomplish this year- exercise, guitar and meditation. starting out with just 5 minutes a day- it can certainly be more- but a minimum of 5 minutes- every day- let's see how I sound at the end of the year. Today- I practiced 3 string major triad shapes all over the neck- that was cool actually. I think I'll film some and post! Thanks for your inspiration and keep it up! You're awesome!
I have instruments to learn right next to me but for now I’m going to use this for accountability for music production. That’s where my energy is at right now, so pausing you for watching my online lessons, beat making, mixing. That’s where it’ll help ✌🏼
The last hours of the previous year finally i put an order for a headless Chineberger travel size guitar and waiting it to arrive.I am not going to travel somewhere but i like this particular type of guitar a lot even if staying at home.I hope when arrives in a couple of months and at last i hold it in my hands to play to be easy and ergonomic and not to spend the rest of the year for adjustments and every kind of modification.
You really are looking bright and rested here. It's a bit uplifting on this New Year's Day. It was a bit of a tough holiday for me and my family but all will be alright.
I have learned that "Motivation comes after Action" basically, when it comes to practicing guitar, don't wait to be Motivated to play your instrument or it will end up like a new year's resolution... Instead, just pick it up and start playing/practicing you will instantly get Motivated to play. Thank you for the great videos.
Truer words were never said. Happens a lot with me when I feel like doing some time pass instead of guitar, but I practice guitar instead, and always thank myself for it at the end of my practice session.
