First Neuralink Brain Chip in a HUMAN
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 січ 2024
- Elon Musk says his company Neuralink just implanted its first brain chip into a human. Here’s how this works and why it matters:
Neuralink is working on brain-computer interfaces to try to let people control a computer with just their thoughts. They’re calling this first product “Telepathy” which… fits. The actual implant is a small electronic chip with sensors that can detect brain signals and then wirelessly send them to an app, which decodes them into actions.
They first controversially tested this on monkeys, and then back in September, the FDA approved Neuralink for its first human trials. This first human test is just to evaluate the safety of the implant and surgical robot. There are very few details so far, but Musk says that the implant is detecting neuron spikes - meaning it’s reading the electrical and chemical signals sent by the brain, which seems promising!

Yes, there are obviously dystopian perspectives because some applications could be disastrous, but that goes for most technology. So long as people don't jump to get the surgery without cause (and I suspect the price will put people off anyway, for starters), there's nothing to be concerned about.
It really comes down to whether someone otherwise incapacitated has the ability to function properly again or to never have that chance. This technology could potentially provide that chance.

Go read about how the test monkeys were so badly tortured and traumatised by the implants, that they were physically trying to tear and bash their skulls open to get it out.
Although Elon musk generally likes to lie and make fake promises this is more of a specific achievement he's supposedly done but the bigger concern is how she is way to optimistic about those advancements in technology that can easily be a step to making everyone's lives miserable. Unfortunately companies will find a way to create a key of exploitation, then convince th government and after they do that some gullible people might be interested and slowly becoming the norm and even a requirement

Talked about this in my neurorehabilitation course today. I don't trust it at all. The ethics of this are terrible, having past tests killing many monkeys. Not only that, many of the features of the chip are either theoretical/lies or just outright impossible (currently), such as mood and hormone regulation. A few articles talk about the different features of the device, but they just seem like false promises.
Also, we're talking about Elon here. We cannot get our hopes up on something like this.
The ethics are up for debate. It's not a guaranteed death sentence, they've also seen a lot of success. Healthy people wouldn't be approached, making the ethics no worse than offering someone that's terminal the option of euthanasia. If someone is suffering and forced to 'live' a very limited life, and know the risks, that being unethical is extremely debatable.
A lot of the claims are yet to be seen but fundamentally the technology works, at least on monkeys.
The key takeaway should really be that this technology is advancing. Whether it's Neuralink or something else, this could be viewed as a proof of concept. Advancements in this space are taking place and competition will present itself in time, as is the nature of a free market.
For people who are barely able to enjoy their lives, this could change everything.
It's only to help paralyzed people it CANNOT be hacked or do anything else
