Wow....I wish I had you as a next door neighbour....such an interesting guy. Love watching you machining....great kit you have. But my word....I think you need a wider garage....your traveling crane is a fantastic idea....love it. I have a mig....130amp gas....its ok...but could doing with bigger....but I do have my oil filled Oxford for heavy stuff.....but when I see this modern welders....Mig/Arc/Tig combined.....for such low prices.....getting one is very tempting. When you had the Riley's motor up in the air....I thought....gee thats a heavy old flywheel it has. Thanks for sharing with us. Nick from Cheshire.

A bigger workshop would be great but space is an issue with the only solution being to move......but the thought of moving the contents of the garage and workshop brings me out in a cold sweat. Good to hear you've got an old Oxford welder ( there's still a lot out there still doing sterling service ) , I've got a Thermal Arc 180 that I've had for over 20 years, my welding supplier convinced me to buy this ex demo unit rather than some of the similar priced new units that they had on display, it's done sterling service and he always offers to buy it back if it ever failed because they are such a good unit. I have a TIG/arc unit but I use the mig more ( TIG gets through gas at an alarming rate ( and always remember to turn the gas bottle off when finished because it leaks out through the unit over time unlike a mig unit .......don´t ask me how I know ) and yes the engine is a heavy lump ( it took myself, my neighbour and his rugby playing son to carry it from workshop to garage........and that was without the flywheel!!!!!!!)
I agree re moving.....far to stressful. Bought the Oxford aged 17....with zero clue on how to weld. Brand new £49....my idea was I could use it to weld up my old Mk 1 Cortina.....how mistaken I was.... Helped when I found I could buy a brazing torch for it....carbon arc. Still the welder paid for itself many times over so all was well. Keep up the good work Allan.@@TweedsGarage
Nicely designed and executed project Mr Tweed. For the weight you're dealing with the attachment to the rafters should be fine. If you were dealing with a big V8 engine and gearbox it may be a bit chancy. I have taken risks before and got away with it. The most sketchy was swapping the engine and gearbox on a 1965 Singer Gazelle. I borrowed a 5 ton chain hoist from work and ran a couple of turns of cable around a thin rafter holding up an asbestos roof. You could see the rafter bouncing on every pull on the chain. The other mad (young in those days and skint) was another engine out on a '73 Viva. This one I stood inside the engine bay and lifted it out. I'm surprised I can still walk today! Thanks Colin, the roof was redone a few years ago with5" x 2" joists so its pretty robust but yes a cast iron big block Chevy with 350 turbo box would probably put a bit of a curve in the roof and yes i remember hauling Ford pinto lumps and BMC A series engines out with lumps of timber and a rope........couldn't do it now...
@@TweedsGarage Tempus Fugit and all that. I think with your garage/machine set up and your skill set there's not much you couldn't tackle. I've always been an inveterate tinkerer and fixer, my wife says it's why she married me. Her Dad wasn't good with tools and a shelf above her head fell on her in the night causing her to make a very dodgy choice of husband!
I once let my brother use my small HALRAC pully lift...remember those in the late 60s.....1/4 inch nylon rope. He lifted out with great difficulty a 1960 Vauxhall PA Cresta big 6 cylinder limp c/w with gear box. No HS in those days.
A really useful addition to your workshop, you would have made life much easier if you used a length of 6"x3" RSJ for your rails, you could then just mount the skate around the bottom web, it would also be much safer if the bolts holding the rail were put through the roof joists nearer the top, the way you have them they can pull out the lower 1" of timber if they fail, you now have a much better lifting system than an engine hoist will give you, especially in your now cramped conditions, did your Student come with the DRO system connected, or did you fit that?
