Thanks for the idea, and confirming my suspicion that this sort of fabric would work.
I got a premade high efficiency filter, but I vacuum a lot. The premade dust filters (outer sleeve) to help make the high efficiency filter last longer fall apart too often for my taste. I've had to research/make DIY aquarium filters before for custom setups, and hence know polyester quilt batting does a pretty good job of filtering small particles out of water ('polishing'). Scraps aren't hard to come by where I'm located. Quilters use big pieces+tend to give scrap bags away; from which I made a sleeve to go over the high efficiency filter. Cut to size and stitched it up so it fits well around the filter but can be slid off. This video I referenced while just loosely brainstorming what sort of material to use on the outermost layer, since it is always getting nasty fastest. Going to try landscape/weed barrier fabric. They make different strengths of it so whatever holds up to my frequent shop vac use is the grade I'll go with. I'm using the big rubber band that came with the prepackaged dust filters to hold it in place.. this is more or less replacing those premade which fall apart easily, with something a little more durable. After I vacuum I shake the filter stuff off over the trash, but then I also take off the dust filter/outermost layer and polyester batting sleeve, and rinse them out at a utility sink. Let dry fully and reattach. It is loose enough to let air thru without harming the vacuum but doing a great job at filtering. My premade high efficiency filter (the innermost layer) is going to last ages this way, +I'll be saving money since I'm literally making this stuff with scraps.

Awesome you really expanded on this filter ideal. The money you save is great as long as the material meets your filter needs. Thank you for your story and we wish you the best.

I've been using an old towel, but I like the landscape mesh better. Thanks. Try a large elastic band or motorcycle tub slice. Makes it easier to change instead of twist ties.

That sounds awesome, will have to use that next time. We live on a boat now and the shop vac is important!

Pool Socks are a lot more practical and you can get 20 socks for about $15.00.

Ours came with the cap, but if you don't have the cap, just zip tie the bottom. Thanks for the awesome question!

Filters fine for in the garage to pickup water, but you do you. Love it when you like your own comment.
