More or less this is an amazing attempt at a restoration my guy, One thing i never knew why was that: Why wasn't anime ever that successful in certain english territories back then? Granted I'm filipino so i wouldn't know since I'm a late 2000s kid (2009 to be specific) but it just baffles me old classic anime was everywhere around the world but it wasn't until late 90s and early 2000s was when it made it big in america thanks to Toonami and the media groups of fans back in the 80s (At least with canada and european areas, They got it a steady popularity which led to this dub and many other lost ones)
Amazing recreation!! the censorship is much harsher than the US dub, I kinda like how they removed Tenma from the plot instead of just never bringing him up much again in the original, also funny how the dub seems to call Tobio "Tommy" up about halfway until returning to calling him Toby, but that may be from audio quality
I think what's going on here is that the people making this dub wanted to give the two children slightly different names to "prevent confusion." So they called the real child Tommy and the robot boy Toby.
This is a very charming dub, though I don't know how much the original music influences that. I wish this dub wasn't mostly lost; the plot differences and name changes are interesting, and Astro's voice is literally the best English voice he's ever had imo.
im very split between this voice and the american voice. certain episodes in the american dub have a far superior VA for pretty much all characters than others. the ones where the characters look super off model and scribbly i find tend to have the worst voice over for all characters (ie. bee city), the animation style thats more bubbly and cutesy tends to sound tonally light hearted for the most part (ie. frankenstein, light ray), and the episodes that have the most on-model animation have the best overall VA. these episodes tend to be more tonally dark, moody, progress the plot in some way, or are an atlas episode. (ie. episode 1, 2, 3, atlas episodes, episode 47 where they go to a nazi camp and viking burial grounds to find treasure + like 4 people die). i think these episodes in particular blow the canadian dub right out of the water in terms of their quality, but for episodes like bee city or any that look like... that (once you see it you cant unsee it lol), yeah, canadian dub is better, albeit at the cost of violence or real stakes of any kind
Now this is the series I got up at 6am to watch as a kid (reruns on Global in the early-to-mid 90s) Also, I just realized that this re-written bit of Tobio/Toby wanting to watch Dr. Tenma's robot demo in person somehow made its way into the 2009 feature film without anyone noticing.
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! Where/how did you get the audio for this episode?!? I recently restored the Canadian dub of "Atlas Lives Again", its uploaded to my channel. Only been able to find a handful of canadian dubs. Im very happy to have the pilot! Thanks again man!
@@mrtesticlease4638 really? Half the series? For some reason I can only find around 8 episodes on dailymotion, and none of them are this pilot episode. Can you share a link perhaps?
Maybe ONE day someone will find these… I am hoping so badly that they get found because this strange footnote in the character’s history was MY MOM and UNCLE’s Astro Boy. The Canadian dub aired on TVO and Global many years ago and that’s where they watched it was well as sometimes CBC. They may have been exposed to the US dub here or there but it was mostly this one. I’d love to find out that all of these episodes still exist somewhere…. For all I know some exec somewhere here in the country is sitting on a bunch of master tapes of this dub… I don’t want it to be gone forever…. Also nice Simpsons reference username lmao
This was one of the first anime's I watched as a kid other than the original Speed Racer. Astro Boy was a playable character in the puzzle game "Christal Crisis".
Hello! I spent a couple of years re-editing the Japanese blurays (the entire series) into the Canadian censored-version (with the "games" at the end of each episodes). How can I get in touch with you?
Not lost, in fact never was. It was always available for licensing from the distributors, and was used for the restoration of the French dub on dvd. This was not based off of the WI dub, the French and Canadian dubs where directly translated from the Japanese scripts.
it is lost. you keep saying this but have yet to honor any proof, and alongside that, you must realize that not being able to access media means its lost media. its not found until its publicly available, and its not publicly available, not even in library of congress or something similar. your point is moot regardless
"Not lost, in fact never was. It was always available for licensing from the distributors..." With how little this dub's been recorded/preserved, let alone resurfaced online, you might as well say it IS lost. The Canadian broadcasters wiped the tapes. "...and was used for the restoration of the French dub on dvd." All that means is that we can get an idea of how heavily censored the Canadian dub was. And no, it's not likely said audio was included as a bilingual track.

Not to mention that Astro's voice actor here was an actual kid at the time of recording. Most other dubs had young women doing little boy voices.

Thanks for this amazing quality episode! There are AI filters that will remove the buzzing throughout the audio.
To you too and thank for your kind comment about this
