Our ranger is a 2008 and didn't come from the factory with the jumper switch. We installed the tournament saver pro two years ago and it's awesome!! It feels so good to sit there and start it after it didn't want to start!
It just a starter solenoid you can buy for 10 bucks in a fancy metal case. I have one in my pontoon I use with a rocker switch to isolate the engine from the electrical system when left unattended
Hey, maybe that's how I lost my hair! Doing about 23 mph in my 14' Duracraft 15 HP Johnson. Yep, that's what happened alright. You get 25-30 pounds of bass in there, it'll really slow down. That battery thingamajig good. I need.
For anyone with a Minn Kota trolling motor with integrated transducer (AKA US2 models): You can ONLY connect the "low side battery" as Minn Kota calls it to another battery system. This means to the boat battery or a device such as shown in Ken's video. The low side battery is the one that has the TM Ground connected to it. Connecting to any other battery in a 24V or 36V Minn Kota US2 system will likely blow the bonding wire fuse and could damage the motors electronics, so be careful when installing any such product of manually jumping an outboard. I'm not familiar with Motorguide, so can't speak about those systems. Under no circumstance should such a connection be left connected any longer than needed in an emergency. The isolation of the two systems is desirable for numerous technical reasons. The product reviewed is one way to have that isolation but also an emergency jump feature. UPDATE: It is unclear to me if all Minn Kota motors have a bonding wire, or just the US2 models. My motors are US2, and their manuals do warn of the bonding wire issue. I don't know what the manual for non-US2 models says - they could be the same. Check your motor manual regardless of model just to be sure.
Thank you, ohh shut... that sound makes me laugh every time I hear it. Wow, I can wait.... Please be safe out there and may God and Mary bless you all. Happy Thanksgiving.
Hey Ken, have you given the Tempest Plus a shot? I'm running the same motor on a Triton SF-21 with a 24p Tempest Plus. My top speed is about the same, but my hole shot is much stronger, and that's with two people, full livewell, full ice chest (6 bags of ice), and 40 gallons of fuel. I tried a 23p Fury and it was much slower for me. Of course, being a F/S, I probably benefit more from the bow lift of the Tempest.
I haven’t, when I settle on a boat I’m going to run tempest, fury and bravo in several configurations and try to get a full understanding of difference and of course share what I find
Hello Ken .. Iam Hassan from Dubai I have 31 ft gulf craft wight around 4000 pounds with twin F300 Yamaha motor i did WOT with 19 pitch 15 1/4 Diameter Yamaha propeller RPM 6150 mph 59 then I switch the propeller to 23 pitch mercury plus 14.6 diameter RPM 5700 mph 63.5 and my question please what propeller I should try to increase top end speed like 68-70 mph ? For example tempest 23? Or others?
i tought that 4 stroke have more torque than 2 stroke , why is it that the 4 stroke it s just turning a 23p prop ,my 225 opti 2 stroke used to turn a 25 p, is it difference in gear ratios ? thanks
Maurizio I believe same gear ratio, motor best turns a 24, but lot of other factors, main one being boat, most guys running Basscats and other go fast boats turning 25’s, remember I’m running long wide boat.
Maurizio I believe same gear ratio, motor best turns a 24, but lot of other factors, main one being boat, most guys running Basscats and other go fast boats turning 25’s, remember I’m running long wide boat.
So I've been reading up on this and it's true. The computer will pull back the timing if it senses something different in the propping. You might want to talk with the Mercury dealer to insure your motor is properly setup.
Hi Ken, thank you for the new Mercury performance stats on your Z521. Can I ask, what are the stats you capture with a full tournament load ie partner, full of gas and with live wells loaded? Was your last boat a 521 and can you give a comparison with a Mercury Optimax if that’s what you had on the back please.
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost my account password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
@Ryan Kenzo I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Dear Sir ... I am thinking of purchasing the 225 version of your engine . Out of plain curiosity is it possible to try a top speed run with the 24p fury with your boat as light as possible ? I want to see if it will get close to 6300 and 75+ mph
The owners manual says 6200 is motor max rpm. Remember the smallest V8 is 250, there is a 225 4 stroke, but I believe it is a v6. We will get it out in next few weeks on a better day and see what we can get out of it.
good video, nice engine.... When the term *_holeshot_* is used shouldnt that be from *_in gear IDLE_* ? ...... 2:24 - 2:30 .... the boat looks like its doing at least 1100-1400rpm.
Hi, 0:32 , your stats on weight give a conservative 2800lbs (excluding yourself?). The momentum or *_lack of momentum_* is a significant factor when testing for an engines *_holeshot_* ability. Giving your boat the advantage of a *_faster momentum_* can not be dismissed for a package nearing 3000lbs, including yourself. I would say visually there would be a noticable difference if you tried it from a true *_holeshot IDLE_*
Apparently Ken does not know that a Fury prop run 1inch high in pitch and for a 24 pitch Fury should be loaded in a prop slip calculator as a 25 pitch and not as a 24. He would see that his prop slip less than 10%, which is real good, and not the 5.?? that he flash up on the screen. That level of slip is damn near impossible to achieve in a heavy bass boat, possibly in the light go fast bass. Just need to know the characteristic of the prop that he has.
Good info, absolutely have never heard that but I had always heard that only boats that run that low on the slip scale are go fast boats like Allison’s, Gamblers, etc. I have also heard that any prop out of the box may be +/- 1 degree from advertised and that all three ears may not match. My understanding, which is just what I’m told, is that when you hear of a prop being “trued”, it tuning ears to match. Curious if that is correct?
Yes Ken, that is very true about props being off and a good prop turner has the shape blocks to check it with. Of the props that I hear being the worst of being out of turn is the 26 pitch Tempest, don't know why but most seem to be off some. With that size boat, and I use to own a 361 Ranger I can understand about the saying that Ranger are not a go fast boat. though my would run over 70 mph with a 175 EFI motor and a A45 model 25 pitch Tempest prop. The Bravo Series prop that Mercury racing has out now for outboards run a pitch low compared to the Tempest, and the Fury's run a pitch high. The problem with the Fury prop is it can not handle a heavy load. Still has a good hole shot, but loses some to a bunch on the top end. Mercury Racing designed the Bravo XS series props to have a good hole shot and be able to carry a heavy tournament load, i.e. 2 angles all there stuff and livewells full. Mercury has follow suit with a four blade Fury and Mercury claims the same thing. The Bravo's like to be ran 1/2 to 1 inch higher on the transom compared to the Fury and the Fury 4 likes to be ran close to the same height as the 3 blade. You can go to the Mercury Racing website and read all the Blogs put out by Scott Reichow, the prop designer for Merucry Racing. He can steer you to the best prop for that motor and boat combination.
John my fishing partner is running my boat with the two stroke and has tried the Bravo, it’s right at same top speed and a little slower hole shot, however it sounds way meaner, guess it vents a different way. When I reached out to Mercury when i got this boat 5-6 weeks ago they had absolutely no data on the 4 stroke re: props. I suspect that is changing as we all play with them. I’d be really curious to run the 4 blade Fury as well, will eventually get to all of them, but as you know there is no “perfect prop”, as weather and load plays such a big role in which runs best. It’s interesting that with the 2 stroke I’ve heard guys claim that the Fury, Bravo and Tempest are all the fastest. Will keep researching and playing with them until i find my best hot and cold weather props, thanks for your input!
Ken, that is absolutely correct. Mercury racing has played a bunch with the Verado 4S and have a version of the Bravo prop called the Bravo FS that is for the 4 stoke engines. It does not have any ventilation's holes. the 4 strokes have so much low torque that the holes aren't needed. The FS is the same prop as the XS except the XS has 8 holes. I have a Bravo XS on my Triton 21HP, which is a 21 ft boat, and I find that it has a bunch of stern lift as well as good bow lift . I'm swinging a 27 inch pitch with a 250 Pro XS 2 stoke about 5750 in March, lot less in the summer time though I don't usually run wide open. I would think that the XS version would be the best chose since you can start with all holes plugged and then open them if needed. I hope to change to a 300 Pro XS 4 stoke next year since my is rated for a 300HP. I'll keep watching to see what you find out.

Ken Smith Yep people complain that they can’t buy a optimax anymore I guess because that is what they are used to. But the Fourstrokes make the same amount of power, have more torque, and weigh the same. So the Fourstroke is the only option on the water. But the 18 optimax motors are de tuned so they might be slower then the 17 2 strokes.
70+ mph is fast for a boat shit the fastest ive gone in a boat about low to mid 50s "mph" ina yamaha 150 4 stroke on a 22x7 aluminum flat bottom i did get to try a yamaha 175 4 stroke that would go 65mph with the current of the yukon same boat set up 22x7 flat bottom with 20 inch transom 20inch shaft 175 but i never did get to wide open it

The battery switch thing looks like what we call a parallel switch in the offshore world. Most offshore boats have them for the same reason
I’d never seen one, really cool feature.
that smaller dog looked like he was having the time of his life lol
I like the battery jumper. Thanks for sharing.
not bad at all I get 78 fully loaded with a 27 p custom worked razor prop on my bass cat
The term for that is “scary fast”....

Hi ken what about fitting a small solar panel and charge controler for a trickle charge to keep your battery topped up, very inexpensive to fit.
What steering wheel is on that boat i want to get one
Stock!
You have a nice rig!
Is there a reason why you did not do your testing with a full tank of fuel and full live wells?
Charles I’ve played with it since under lots of loads and temp, feel 24p 4 blade fury is best I’ve run so far
Thank you.
So after a bit of time, what prop are you running today?
Fury 23p 3 blade, best overall for how I load. 24p 3 blade a little faster but lose some hole shot and rough water nose control
Megaware keel guard for mercury250pro SX 2 stroke
What do you consider fast then good sir?
There are lots of go fast boats that run up in the 70’s, to me anything 75+ is booking it!

Ken Smith, I'm hearing that you need to have a G3 mercury computer hooked up while trying different props? I really hope this isn't a fact.
