Oh, also, Human teeth are awful in design. They are suceptible to rotting, they don't replace themselves after the "adult" come in, they are brittle in comparison to most teeth in the kingdom.. and when you lose them your bone begins to shrink and this causes some changes in facial structure. Awful design human teeth. We need to genetically alter teeth to replace themselves every 10 years. So that we can say "Yea, I lost a tooth last week from an accident.. my new ones will be coming in next year so i'll just wait.." Instead of "Yea, got to pay 2500 bucks to replace it"
In comparison... lol Comparing a human's teeth to that of a specialized set of teeth is ridiculous. Humans have evolved past needing to bite live victims or eat hard plants to survive. Either that, or we never did in the first place, so being hard was never an issue. Also, all teeth are susceptible to rotting. Organic matter living in a moist, warm environment rife with bacteria? Yup, it'll rot. Mammals have methods of taking care of their teeth. And dog's teeth don't replace themselves, either.
On the bright side, malocclusion isn't likely to cause our teeth to dig into our eyes. Rodents also can have their constantly growing incisors get into their eyes, if they don't constantly gnaw it down. They also can't eat if it gets bad enough... I don't skimp on the grass for my chinchillas.
+GirtheAlienGoldfish I think what he meant is that we have to constantly take care of our teeth. Our teeth are a lot more susceptible to rotting and stuff because we use a lot of manmade stuff to keep 'em clean. Animals usually go their entire lives with little to no teeth problem, but if we dont brush ours for several weeks they get horribly infected. +sacr3 And it's not just our teeth, many aspects of our anatomy have become awful in design because we change and engineer the environment to suit our needs, instead of adapting to it.
In a 2008 study, British people had an average of 0.7 missing or decayed teeth. The US, in the same study, was missing 1.3 teeth on average. Just because fewer of us get our teeth whitened out of vanity than the US, it doesn't mean our teeth are worse. I get that it's a joke, but the myth should stop there.
I came here to learn science, not to improve my English vocabulary, and I think he commented the "Good job, as always, Olivia." part since she gets a ton of hate for mostly no reason so it's always nice to spread some positivity around. Personally I think she's great at her job, I honestly like Olivia's voice and I don't really care about the hand movements, or anxious tendencies, makes me relate to her better and makes me think maybe one day I could be teaching others my passion.
This is NOT the boring childish type of biology video that gives one good fact for every ten it spoon-feeds, this is a great video and a very good teacher. Thank you!
I just realized how much I like moray eels! I have always liked them because they're cool, intelligent and can get domesticated and such. But now they're even cooler! :D Awesome!
Holy crap you got good at videos! You used to speak with a monotone voice...but now it's really good and I want to watch the whole video. Congrats and keep it up!
i know stock footage is expensive, but it realy annoys me that i keep waiting for a piture of a turtle opening its mouth (instead of a macro shot of its throat) never to be seen
I find dogs teeth really interesting. They got teeth almost like omnivores, but their adaptations are very different from ours. Bear and pig are even more adapted for sources other than meat and cats and foxes are specialised for meat. This shows in particular at their rear teeth. Look up carnassials, if you like.
I propose that SciShow simply delete all the nasty comments about Olivia that have absolutely nothing to do with her skill as a host. It's ok to criticise a host if they make mistakes or if they fumble the presentation or something like that; it's NOT ok to attack them solely on the basis of their appearance. Normal people don't care about the looks of a science series host, they care about the science. And even when they do care about appearances, they are polite enough to refrain from public insults. (Also, even though it shouldn't matter, and it's besides the point, I still feel the need to say this: Olivia looks fine.)
How she looks is irrelevant. I do wish she would stop turning her head so much while speaking that she flashes bright reflections of the lights into the camera. Hard on the eyes
It's normal, shes trying inform us and make it fun. Speaking g with her hands and also moving her head. Of course you never know the q cards could be going back and forth from side to side. Lighten up shes a person like everyone else, and she deserves to make mistakes like everyone else.
they must be doing something right, ive seen my dog snap an inch thick bone in a single bite and ive seen her swollow a hotdog whole. She's like Kirby, she just sucks them out of the air if you throw them and swallows them whole, gaining their hotdoggy powers.
Let's wait for scientists to play with animals genes and DNA, lets mix this, an insect body, a kangaroo, crocodile, human and voilá we have an actual Alien.

Maybe parts for which there is no analogous part in humans (or maybe in all other animals-parts unique to that species). OH how about animals that have a "missing" sense-like blind animals. I would love to specifically learn more about lateral lines on fish as well! thanks!
This was an interesting video and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also liked the "this is only weird to humans" speech. I will respectfully disagree. There are parts of humans that are strange because of how rare it is to find in nature, and not due to its appearance. A hand might be strange if we didn't see similar appendages on other creatures. A circular saw of teeth is weird because it is not a "normal" (as in, you havent seen another animal with this) evolutionary trait. There isn't some underlying bias towards human anatomy. Our determination of something being weird is based on experience and if something is an outlier from that experience. That point aside, thoroughly informative video and I appreciate your displaying the weird and fun ways nature comes up with to ensure survival of a species.

A decently well-known one is the goblin shark. It can launch its jaws out of its face.

Goblins?
Technically yes. But I don't think that gained a spot on the list as its the jaws and not the teath that are fired from the face?
