May very well be one of the best SciShow episodes ever! Great graphics that are relevant, Hank is amazing at presenting, and the jokes he squeezes in are so natural yet so funny and don't detract from the education. Great work to all of the staff involved! You guys are easily the most talented group of educators and creators in educational media! You're all wonderful! Keep up the amazing work!
I'm so glad you linked to the Smarter Every Day video, I was hoping you would! He did an amazing job of explaining the mechanics of chameleon tongues as well as getting crazy, unprecedented footage showing it in action!
thought it was very weird how he held the cricket in his mouth though and let the chameleon lick his mouth why not just hold the cricket. thought maybe he got some sorta kink out of it
Oh god did you just say tongues can be biologically similar to a penis...? Just, so much eww. To Hank and all the crew who write and edit these episodes: I love learning here, even this bizzare tongue science. I don't have the ability to offer anything through Patreon, but I almost never miss an opportunity to find something new to learn. You're all so awesome for making things like this show possible. UA-cam is changing so much and I will be following the channel wherever it might go. Thanks again.
Deku Kitty well... I study chemistry... Last week I got to identify two arsenic salts and wouldn't have been happy licking them up. I know, first hand, it hurts when the tiniest bit comes on the back of your hand. :/
@@ezekielmartin4323 I was thinking the same thing! It kinda sounds like that because of the punctuation lol I was gonna say idk about cleaning off your keyboard especially if you share the computer with a guy lolol
While chameleon tongues do provide a really impressive tether grab, I have to agree with TierZoo: Lack of solid core stats, along with the fact they only use their color change for emotes, makes them unviable in a competitive meta.
Awww, the Blue Whale one reminded me of the good old days of 'Truth Loader', where Adam Sich did a frequent 'bit' on Blue Whales. That was such a great little team. I miss them dearly :(
Cow tongues 'grip' grass and the cow moves their head to rip the grass, and often the roots, out of the ground...since they don't have top teeth. That's one reason I only want horses in my fields. They have top and bottom teeth and pinch the grass in two before pulling, which cuts it neatly without uprooting the whole thing.
My IMMEDIATE reaction to seeing that super spiky snapping turtle -- which was so intense that I had to pause the video -- was that I Needed. To. Pet. One. Right. Now. Yes. The one that could sever my fingers. That one. Why? Who knows!!!! It looks funky, that's all!!
We got alligator snapping turtles in the Northeast US as well. At least in ponds and rivers around the BOSTON area that I’ve seen and caught. Can’t vouch for outside eastern Massachusetts but I’d bet they can be found around the rest of New England as well
I wonder if that licking random stuff giraffes do has any relation to people on juice diets and the like craving crunchy stuff, even if it's not actually food.
Speaking of tongues - how did the hipster burn his tongue?... ...by drinking their coffee before it was cool! (disclaimer, no hate intended for coffee drinkers and/or hipsters - you do you!)
I feel terrible but I was listening but not watching during the pangolin, I could help but laugh thinking it was Benedict Cumberbatch's mispronounciation of penguins 😂😂😂
I bet you can. Just bite the tip off. Or ask someone who has. It usually leaves people who accidentally bites part of their tongue off, with slurred speech. But it's honestly a legitimate problem that can occur if you fall over or jump and hit the ground too hard
For pelple who are confused about "vertebrate with the longest tongue" refering to the chameleon and the bat, he refers relative to the body, and not by actual distance
I had tongue cancer last year, almost to the day I had surgery and now have a half tongue/half wrist in my mouth. Sounds weird, is weird. They removed the left half of my tongue and replaced it with a section from my inner left wrist, then covered the hole in my wrist with a graft from my inner left forearm as well as removing my second artery from that part of my arm and attached it as a blood supply to my new piece of tongue. Pretty amazing what surgeons can do these days. I can still talk and eat and drink fine, mostly soft food. I also sound a bit different which I'm still not used to, cant whistle anymore or do any tricks like I could before. Nor can I sing not that I could very well before, lots of new things to get used to...
Can I make a request? Can you make a video on black wolf gene that originated in dogs, autism, or science discoveries named after or share a name with video games.
The only image that was in my mind throughout the whole video was the Kakyoin cherry licking meme xD Or the one of Big Moms children lol PERO LELO LELO xDDD
I don't mind woodpeckers wanging away on trees or even the telephone pole across the street. It's when they go at the metal downspout of my gutter RIGHT outside my bedroom window at dawn that I get annoyed and scared awake. Grr!
Extra random fact about giraffes, they need to supplement their diet with calcium and they do this by chewing on bones they find in the wild 😁 Source: I live \ Work on a game reserve with 13 giraffes.
I was eating chips while watching this and started pulling them into my mouth using my tongue instead of placing them with my hand... I’m very suggestible
Was that a super slick euphemism/brag snuck in there at the end? Lol. 🤔🤭 "Thanks to natural selection, maybe we've all learned some extreme lingual tricks" 😏🤫😂
Pangolins were taking off the list of traditional asian medicines. But not for the right reasons. They only took them off the list since pangolins are suggested to cary a disease similar to covid.

Pr0v3n Yeah, I love these guys, and this episode is great!
Props to the very-appropriate tongue-twister "the tube-lipped nectar bat's incredibly long tongue vital to both species".

The little voice crack in your voice about the Pangopups made it so much better. Thank you.
Hank is just sooo happy when he can talk about giraffes on yt again ;-)
it is nice to see :D
I appreciate the Pangopups immensely.
my tongue is wildly muscular due to my new tongue workouts i've been doing
OMG it's Muscle Hank. It's an honor to catch you in the act.
Muscle Hank strong tongues are for the weak.
Error: no sense of humor detected
Tongue Catapults are for the weak. Muscle Hank just flicks his tongue out normally to catch insects.
That sounds like a euphemism

Alex Parnall lost a bet?
Great video! Would have been cool to talk about snakes or monitor lizards that use their tongues to smell in stereo
The woodpecker wraps its tongue bone around its skull as a shock absorber? I guess it _licks_ its skull just where it is.

not your best lines
hey you're back!
Hank is the best
And was surprisingly close at that ol' trick with the tongue!
Honestly thank you for telling me that Pangolin babies are called pangopups, this is very important information.
I think that blue-tongued skink is quite fancy. Their tongues are special in that they are very blue.
“Pangolins” sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch trying to pronounce “Penguins”
What about the tongue from the package sent through mail?
The parcel-tongue

Devin Johns Tongue + Pingas = it's a match!
pangopups and pufflings, what adorable baby name comes next?
I believe that poacher's bones and skin have mystical powers, I should hunt them, skin them and extract their bones.
Jax Nean but then that makes u a poacher too... looks like i’m gonna have to hunt u oh wait
Sounds like a dangerous game you're playing. Perhaps . . . the most dangerous game.
Please do
I could make an inappropriate joke but it would just feel too stretched out and watered down

Finally a comment where you don't have over 1k likes
That's funny, I thought I already knew everything there was to know about pangolins. How did I miss this? It's hilarious
Hank.... I truly DID need to know about pangopups. 😍
I clicked on this praying to god this was a Hank video. It was absolutely a hank video and I'm pleased. Totally his type of topic.
Woodpeckers aren't annoying, like all animals, they're amazing, beautiful creatures.
That pecking sound is great.
Why did I picture Hank wiggling his tongue at the bottom of the river when explaining the snapping turtle?
I'm so excited that you cited SmarterEveryDay!
A grabby tongue would be really nice to have, hands free eating! Clean key boards! Who wouldn't want that?
Extra hand! Just be careful what you decide to pick up. That could end badly.
For a second I thought you were implying that you'd clean your keyboard with your tongue and I was about to start screaming. Tbh I still might.
Deku Kitty well... I study chemistry... Last week I got to identify two arsenic salts and wouldn't have been happy licking them up. I know, first hand, it hurts when the tiniest bit comes on the back of your hand. :/
well, at least it was not you who dropped hydroclhoric acid on your hand

I feel like hank could spit filthy bars with his tongue, the plosives he comes up with and phenomenal

I've never seen hank that excited to talk about anything really.
Who knew he had such a soft spot for tongues above all things
Yay for the Smarter Every Day shout-out! That's a great video by Destin.
"Don't !! No !!" - Hank Green, 2018
Imagine licking your ear or seeing some toes from across the room and *SLURP!* Devoured.
finally a scishow video about pangolins!!!!!!!

excellent episode as always my main man Hank
Got to say, that whale looked extremely happy
This is the content I’m here for
Tongue meta-commentary. Brilliant!! 😂❤️🎊
Its funny, my nickname back in college was the animal with the wild tongue
The bat needs extra length because of its "special relationship" with its food. XD
My beardie, Cumari, has a really wild tongue. She can't see too well, so... That tongue just goes everywhere in search of food.
Another very imformative video. More chemical formulas and chemical equations please.
Holy crap the kiss face threw me for a moment. Lmao
how can you not love Hank....hahahahah

Pangopups were necessary to mention thanks hank
My dog uses his tongue as toilet paper. And mine has a titanium rod in it.
Editing game on point.
Fell asleep on the beach once and sunburnt my tounge it peels for days.

8:28 - A new solution for IBS! Let's harness that Giraffe Spit!
There is an 8th animal called Hank Green which talks so fast, his toungue produces shockwaves which get subdued by his titanium larynx. 0
there is now an even sadder reason to know about pangolins. they can carry coronavirus without being hurt by it but can still spread it to humans
Nectar bats: never home alone on a Saturday night.

Can you do a video on why rain water makes people itch? I've had this problem for as long as I can remember and I just don't know why

I knew a girl years ago that I'd put up to any of the animals on your list. LOL
You should have more pictures and clips of the animals.
I was just thinking about how chameleon tongues adhere to their food and this video popped up in my suggestions. It must have been fate 😂
I feel smart now!
I can confidently say that i would trade speech for the ability to snatch a roll off of the table next to me
A toungue is everything 😂

I knew blue whales were big. But *their tongues weigh as much as an elephant????* I don’t think I realize how big they really are.
Am i the only one who was playing with their tongue throughout this whole video?
Sarah Gabel How do you play with a Tongue? Like, you throw a ball and say " there, catch it !"
I'm quite sure American snapping turtles can't chop off at finger, but alligator snapping turtles can.
1:43, if it were a biological trebuchet, it would be able to launch a 90 kg projectile 300 meters.
How about a video on the evolutionary history of fruit?
There was just no way to keep that pangolin entry from sounding dirty, was there?
You guys forgot blue tongue skinks, their tongue is blue and is used for self defence
I had no idea about the blue whale nerves. That is crazy
Why did I read this as tongues with weird animals
#1.. Gene Simmons
He invented and copyrighted all tongues.
Surprised that hummingbirds weren't mentioned
Pangolins were taking off the list of traditional asian medicines. But not for the right reasons. They only took them off the list since pangolins are suggested to cary a disease similar to covid.
Funny, I was thinking about the woodpecker's tongue seconds before they mentioned it.
Best presenter!
THANK YOU SCISHOW!!! BUT WILL YOU PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON GLIOMAS?!?!?!? Or at least give me a yes or no???????!
Lorikeets better be on this list.
How would the woodpecker evolve the bone and tongue/shock absorber?
I just wish I could roll my Rs
