What a fantastic video! I'm having my first viola lesson tonight and I feel more confident as what to expect. Thank you for making these videos. Please keep them coming!
This is the most in depth beginner video I've found. Every little angle is covered which is something a lot of vids fail to do. They just kind of tell you to hold it under your chin but not exactly where or how or what angle.
Rebecca, you sound like an amazing teacher. You bring enthusiasm & patience to the lesson and that really motivates the student. Please keep these videos coming. I can't find an affordable teacher this is my viola lifeline. Thanks
Howdy, I'm a friend of your dad, and he had recommended me to your channel to learn how to play my Viola more fluently. And this channel was a great help, and I'm on my way to making millions. Thank you very much, please don't stop making these, I rely on them. If you stop I have officially failed for life.
Woooow, I thought the room looked familiar. This place is in Potsdam, New York and I used to go there for All-County Music Festivals. I miss it so much.
very helpful ~ but my left shoulder still really hurts ~haven't figured out how to hold my viola without all the shoulder stress ~ I saw your suggestions for using the head weight to hold it but I'm not doing something right ~
If you want a good viola cheap ones won’t do you any good the wish ones not to b rude but. They suck don’t get violas or violins from wish bc they aren’t good quality and it won’t help u at all. Ur best bet is to go to a string instrument shop when they have sales which can help u find a viola for about 2,000 at the cheapest.
Not sure what's available in your area. I have local musical instrument stores in my city that offer rentals which is great for people who don't have a pile of cash to put down on an instrument. They have a program where 60% of the rental price goes to the purchase of the instrument if you plan to buy it out when your payment contract is over.
Get a violin and remove the Strings.... get rid of the E string and move the strings up one, then install your C string = you essentially have a 14 inch viola now..... That small difference will not make THAT much of a difference if really any noticeable difference at all. If that small "size" difference TRULY matters then they would not have 4 sizes of whatever instrument you want....... as a C string on a violin would indeed be playing the Note C and it will sound like a "C" because it is tuned to give you C. Everyone says this meaningless "differences" that these HUGE details that seperate violin from viola and will be a totally "different" sound....... yet the biggest factors in "sound" of the instrument is the quality of woods used, the quality of fittings, quality of the strings you install and lastly the quality of bow you use..... use cheap "plastic" bow hair and then switch to real hair bow = a MUCH bigger change in "sound" than this whole "size" argument has. O ya... forgot the quality of ROSIN you apply to your bow..... All of THESE things are the "Main" factors that TRULY change the sound produced by your "instrument"...... that 1 - 1 /2 inch size difference means NOTHING..... As I said.... if it DID, then it would be impossible to have a 1/4 size violin and a 4/4 size violin as that is a MUCH different "size" between the 2 and would be just a DIRE SIN because i guess that size difference "matters" :)
There are a lot of good things in this video. Some notes: I always highly recommend a real shoulder rest as opposed to foam, especially for viola. It is an important skill to hold the instrument up without the left hand, of course with no tension. It's not necessary to line the viola with your foot. It's an interesting marker, but a little too rigid for my taste. Otherwise, I think you have some great points.
You prolly dont care at all but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I love any assistance you can offer me
@@brettorion5659 That is a profoundly random question that brought me back to a comment I left 5 years ago. I would recommend looking on google as opposed to the comment section of UA-cam. Good luck though!
@Weston Genesis thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Im on my second year of viola... The violins in my class are on their 3rd or 4th year 😂. When I practice I run out of rosin when I put a ton on a bow 😂😂
actually ur supposed to let the wrist rest then make your pinky and thumb point on the bow and ur other 3 fingers just slant okay not being rude just being honest with you 😉😉😉😉😉😉😇
NO!!!!!!!!!!!! you do not play a Ukelale..... or a Guitar..... or a Banjo...... The one single thing that makes your instrument what is is..... is the BOW!!!!!!!!!! If you are "throwing away" your bow..... you should switch to one of those instruments. A LOT of "teachers" start a noobie out with pizz and plucking the strings...... My 1st day in "class" we never even took the instrument out of its case...... instead my 1st day we were told to get out the bow and leave the "fiddle" be. We then proceeded to "air bow" the entire 1st class........... The bow is your sound, the bow is your "freedom" the bow is what makes you YOU.... Do not "train" yourself and your body to reject the bow, you must become ONE with the bow.

THank you so much for this instructional video. So many tips for me to practice on!!
I Love you viola❤🎻
The posture of the student in the video seems better than the teacher😥😥
especially the bow holding...
Where can I buy a viola, preferably as cheap as possible? I play but I don't own one.
I don't think there is cheap ones, but at school they are free. Others may be $60.000 or $500-$600.00.
Mari G post link please

is there viola size 14 inch ?,
the seller say that violin. this bigger than violin 4/4 but to small for viola.
