  • Season 2 of "A Discovery Of Witches" is set in 1590 Elizabethan England, and since I already loved season 1, I just had to review the costumes! This unique show, and the books that it's based on, include everything you could want in historical fantasy : Vampires, witches, demons, romance, political intrigue, and time travel-- and both the writer and main character are historians! So are the late Renaissance costumes historically accurate, and does it even matter if they are? I watched all of Season 2 and compared the costuming to 1590s portraits and extant garments to find out. There were all kinds of surprising little details that set this show apart, including embroidery, headwear, and the show's handling of corsetry, and just like Season 1 it was a delight to watch.

I played Henry Percy in Season 2 and the videos and photographs of the costumes truly don't do them justice; as wonderful as they look, seeing them in person was marvellous. A deleted scene I was in had some extras playing emissaries from the middle-east and their costumes were fantastic, the costumes of many of the extras had just as much detail put into them as the leading actors' costumes.

Oh yes, we've all used household fabrics at some point. When I was a performer at my local Ren faire, there was an ongoing joke that we were all ambulatory couches, because our garb fabric was predominately from the upholstery section at Hancock Fabrics, RIP.

💫❤ It was truly a balm to see that dressing scene and all of those details. I did notice that most of the innacuracies were in Vampire dress so I self justified that their long lives give some disdain to the shifting ephemera. They do what they need to blend but keep to what they like. Cause of course vampires love leather right?🙂

Oooh! I was hoping someone from CosTube would do a review of this series. I love that the getting dressed scenes in the book are so detailed, and I am so happy that the screen adaptation gave the costume department a chance to show off actual period expertise. I'm not fussed about Gallowglass running around in all leather even though it's not entirely appropriate. Part of his character expression is through his rather iconoclastic dress regardless of time period. I was a bit more surprised about Matthew's styling, because in the books his dress is much more in line with what would be expected of someone of his status. I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't show up in full Elizabethan glory. I haven't seen all of the episodes, but am looking forward to them!

I totally agree with the trousers of Matthew (well I have to, as I'm not a historian...) but I'm a little sad that you didn't mention his leather Jacket is a duplicate of a real existing one which is dated back to that time period. I think this is an awesome pease of work.

I *LOVED* the second season of ADoW!
I feel like this & especially ‘Emma’ are **proof** that accuracy in historical dramas (or, at least a stronger attempt at it) _is_ possible - while not 💯% accurate, I didn’t really feel anything overly anachronistic or unrealistic take me out (minus my attention being drawn to Matthew’s leather pants a couple of times, lol!) - I kinda think the slimline/ streamlined look in the men’s fashions was unfortunate, but it also kind of feels like it’s here to stay- & that’s a shame, but again- I ultimately didn’t mind as much...

you did an excellent video and research, however is documented that letaher was heavily used in spain during the same time period... I didn't watch the show or read the books, but maybe it is related (you know, queen elizabeth hold a war against spaniard king phillip II, actually, you showed one portrait of him) or maybe the simpliest explanation is the right one: they tried to appeal modern audiences with that leather outfit... in any case, such a well made video, you should be very proud of yourself.

Also, and since Portugal was in Spain's domain at this time (1580-1640), have you encountered any references related to Portugal's fashion in those decades? I presume it must have been very similar to Spain's fashion, but I haven't read anything related to Portuguese historical fashion, nor do I know any studies about this issue.

The 2nd book explains Diana’s pants better. Matthew hand stitched them to resemble something as close to Modern leggings as possible, as they were always her favorite and she had been missing them. Basically they are meant to be a sort of skin tight leather pant, and are therefore not of the period.

Thank goodness! I was sure that Diana was riding astride the entire trip across France (can we say "chafe"? -- ow!) and the comment Matthew made about riding sidesaddle was a blind. I kind of think they wanted us to think that she had been riding sidesaddle until she got the breeches, but I wasn't buying it.
I accepted the way she wore the clothes as indicating that she, as a 21st century woman, was, by God, going to dress the way she was comfortable as much as possible. And, in general, she "dressed down" when she was with people who knew (or who would soon know) she was "different". In formal, public places, she was "proper". I took the riding breeches to be a nod to the leggings she CONSTANTLY wore and talked about in the books, which was a nice detail. In the book, Matthew even gave her some kind of breeches that she was able to wear as leggings -- pretty sure that was at Sept Tours and got a comment for Marthe.
This was a great recap and review of the clothes.

Just to be a total nerd, the second series (so the one that came out in 2020) was actually filmed in 2019 and I was at the DoW Con in Cardiff (where they were filming) during filming! They actually did quite a bit on the costuming and some of the fabrics were made for it, albeit from modern fabrics. I’ve also had the great privilege of meeting the author who, as you rightly state, is a historian of the period. I think many of the decisions were A Choice by designers and production

Although this is a review of A Discovery Of Witches (which I love and was excited to watch, it's great to see a costume review by someone who's watching the series and has read the books) I do want to mention the bridgerton corsetry scene. My initial reaction upon watching that clip in Bridgerton was to disdainfully point out that tight lacing wasn't a thing until metal eyelets came along. However, in 'Corsets and Crinolines" there is some mention of women in the regency era squeezing themselves into long tubular corsets in order to flatten their curves to achieve the fashionable waistless silhouette. I wish I could claim that this was what the scene is portraying but I do think it was filmed with the intention of implying tightlacing and that is what most watchers would take it for. However, since I really did enjoy bridgerton, I'm allowing my head to accept the theory of tubular corsetry so that it doesn't ruin the show by causing me to shout at the telly. And as for the raunchy scene in the rain with stays on bare skin.... well at least they put them over shifts in most of it....

Reminds me of myself whenever they want to make the male lead actor more attractive by putting him on a horse ... As a equestrian, the first thing I look for are the feet, often the biggest giveaway, and if they're pointing down I know he's not a rider and all I can think about is if that horse scares and stops dead in it's tracks, the actor's going over 😅

The main problem I had with the show was everything that was left out and them having to change things. The one thing I really do not like (after I read the books) was in s1 the plot line of Marcus not being able to take a human through the process of becoming a vampire as this is totally ridiculous once you get to s3 and find out he has a whole family in New Orleans. They could have used the time spent on that plot in s1 to include more of stuff from the book.

We've just watched both seasons in two days because somebody mentioned there is Elizabethan clothing in the second one. I was not dissaponted, I am still not sure about the story itself, I do have a bunch of "Huh?" (like if she is such a powerful witch whose power triggered by danger, why is that power never seems to save her? And if I see that boat crossing the hiding bubble in Venice I am goingto bang my head), but I also was enchanted by the costumes. I literarly screamed when I saw that redwork coif, and the blackworked cuffs. Not sure about pinned stomachers, but what the heck, I accept they existed. My BF asked me about lace and they are not LePompe or Modellbuch, but passable, BUT, BUT, there is a CROCHETED snood in ep3. I know nets and beaded nets actually were a thing, but crocheted? arrgh. Otherwise, I agree with everything. Great video, thank you.

I read the books some years ago and when I heard they were making a life action series I was more worried than excited. I was bummed when the first season came out because of the many concessions they took, for the casting and the scenes, since they didn't follow that much closely to the book, not even enough to evoke the same feeling or sensation. So, I haven't checked the 2nd season. Now thou, watching this review and hearing your excitement about the historical work they did, I find myself intrigued and drawn to watch it. So I will try to.
I also find quite funny, I have to mention, that they changed so much of the men's wardrobe to entice the audience, something commonly done on the female wardrobe in other series, (even when they are 100% drama for female audience) to entice the male audience for at least the couple seconds/minutes of boob showing, etc. Yet this time are the handsome vampires the ones used to entice the audience. Hehehehe, they have a nice body so I will forgive it. OvO
I fell in love with vampires again after reading about Mathew and Gallowglass so I'm kind off happy with that... change in wardrobe? hahaha can't help it. I just wished they had added more gay characters that ended happily ever after... T___T well, let's not go that route since there isn't even the whisper of a trans character.... *siiiiiiiighhhhh oh well, I love the books so I will check the first season again and the second season after. : ) Lovely video by the way.

I definitely understand putting the men in straight pants instead of those puffy ones, it would have removed a lot of their dignity from the modern viewers standpoint...i would have liked to see them in those tighter knee length pants with hose though, those look good. And the lack of hats i get, since they do that a lot in historical dramas. It would have been cool, though, to show how dogmatic they were back then about making sure the hat was on the head when outdoors.

I read the books and one of the things I loved about is the way the clothing was described in SUCH DETAIL. They also talked about the layers that go on under the clothes and period clothing methods like how Diana's maid in France used a " curling iron-like contraption" to make her ruff ( though someone with more knowledge in this decade, can you clarify if this method is really period correct.)
As well as showing that different countries back then have their own regional fashion, like how they described in detail what the women in Prague wore and the fact that Diana actually had to get an ENTIRE NEW WARDROBE just to illustrate the difference between Prague and English court dress.
and I also cannot forget when she had to dress up to go to the royal court and I love imagining all those BEAUTIFUL Elizabethan clothes with all the gilding and rich fabrics.
I like to imagine a fan-fiction addition to the story, that Diana actually had a friend from the university who is both a Fashion Historian and Costumer and when her friend found out that she was going back in time. The friend joined them and somehow is involved in the story without changing the main details ( I am still thinking of the logistics . Though I would love to hear what detail YOU GUYS could up with)
AND I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH OH MISS SNAPPY DRAGON FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!
P.S. Sorry to all the people who haven't read the books, for all the spoilers.

I know it's not reasonable to expect every historical fiction author to have the level of knowledge that a career historian will, but it's still such a treat when it happens

Great review, but now i have a weird comic scene in my mind, where all the extras wearing appropriate hoses and garments, are trash talking behind the leather clad actors backs. :D

Wonderful review! I am a huge fan of the books and was so pleased with the costumes, especially Dianna’s (the corset dressing scene was amazing!! No corset tight lacing shenanigans) The capes and extra witch looks where also fantastic! (I chose to ignore Matthew’s modern pants haha, vampires do what they want I suppose)

I think the riding connundrum was the editing's fault--Diana clearly wears the breeches in a scene *before* she is given them, so I think the scenes were just switched up during editing

Thanks for a great dissection. I love the All Souls trilogy, glad the adaptations have captured the books so well (in my opinion & OK there are some smallish changes, but as with LOTR what works in a book doesn’t always work on film). Ridiculously excited over the whole look/aesthetic of the entire show. Looks like the UK is behind on episodes (we’re @ n4)? 😭😭 Not a historian but had a feeling that so far the ladies’ costumes were better than is usually the case on TV & at least some of the menswear. And especially the ladies’ hairdos 😍 some of which I plan to experiment with once mine’s long enough. #hairgoals

AS you were saying The words “what they think is old Timey” I thought of Vikings in a split second later you threw it up on the screen. That show drives me nuts with their bad costuming especially considering how beautiful the clothes they actually wore were And how easy it is now to research that.

It's so nice not to see the mistake so commonly seen - and I've even had friends say to me when I've complained about something 'oh it's fantasy/sci fi - what does it matter?' - no! That's the point! To sell the fantasy or sci fi element EVERYTHING else must make sense. I've read the books, haven't managed to see the series yet, but I did love it - despite the tedious romantic vampire tropes (completely with you on that).

I love the books, and I love the show!
I kind of felt, in several ways, that this season was oriented towards the viewers. I didn't get as much costume historical inaccuracies (IDK if they should be called like this, because I didn't see a major inaccuracy) as you did, but even so some of the costumes did feel odd... like Diana's hair on her wedding (though I agree with your argument in that) or men constantly dressed in leather... or even the ridding scenes. BTW, IDK why they focused so much on that one scene. I don't remember as much detail on their trip in the book as in the show... they did omit some other moments I would have enjoyed watching, and because of that I didn't understand their choices.
Diana's outfits are gorgeous, non the less, as well as several details that have transported me to 1590, like the linen, the embroidery and the sets.
Thanks for your review, I was looking forward to a historical costuming review like this one that you jus did!

I felt so much connection when I read these books for the first time 💚 - my entry in this year's Foundations competition was going to be based on Diana until I hit a stumbling block. I haven't seen the series (will have to wait till it ends up on terrestrial tv) but I'm glad they've not destroyed it! Although the actress who plays Diana looks a tad younger than I was expecting 🙂 Very enjoyable vlog, thanks.

Dianas second dress (the one the isnt from the 1570s) looks very similar to a portrairt on of Amy Robshart that was painted in the victoria era.

i read and loved the books (despite the endlessly frustrating abusive tendencies of vampite stories) but haven't had a chance to watch the show and now i'm very excited to have such goodies for my eyes to feast on! (side note, I think Matthew Goode is maybe the most charming man around??)

    • @pamelatarajcak5634

In context, though Matthew is the only one controlling and it's due to a mental condition. The others are just plain cool...I mean Miriam is life goals there!

    • @kendall7041
      @kendall7041 3 роки тому

@@pamelatarajcak5634 technically you could call abusive tendencies in anyone a mental condition. I still really enjoyed the books but to me it's a pretty dangerous trope that's used consistently in vampire stories. He stalks her, he tries to intimidate her by assaulting her, and all of this is excusable within the context of the story because of his bloodlust but I just think it's an unnecessary trope we should move away from. It bothers me less in adult fiction like this because hopefully the people engaging with it are mature and educating enough to recognize these things as abuse but for younger people engaging with the material, i think it can set a dangerous tone for what's "romantic".

  • @lafregaste

Update. I'm binge watching your videos and I finally came to the video that brought me to your channel, but I'm sorry to say, the re-watching of the series was doomed. I do love the wardrobe for the second season, but I only need pinteres or Instagram to enjoy them. The characters, the scenes... They told a story different enough I felt betrayed. I have re-read the books so many times I know them by heart so that's probably why. Usually my imagination mixes the movies with the book so I can't tell what scenes actually happened in the movies and which ones didn't. But, with Discovery of witches? No... Not at all. It's sad but that can't be helped, I believe they changed so much to appeal to a broader audience, as well as a more modern audience. After all the books came out some years ago, 7+ years ago. Oh well, I enjoyed (again) your videos, so I guess it's fine in the end

That’s why it’s called an adaptation. It’s not meant to be exactly the same as the books.
