Tom is brilliant. Great analysis and so easy to listen to. Good banter to
TE is a great listen either on Radio Scotland or the Five Live rugby podcasts.
We looked a different team when gibson park came on we scored 2 trys within 5 mins when he was on the field.
We're not going away as a team. Ireland haven't peaked. Not by a long shot. If anything, we're improving. The team is adapting and coming up with new ways to win. The game yesterday is the perfect embodiment of that fact. Flanker throwing lineouts. A prop playing as a hooker. Players dropping like flies. And we still won.
I've no idea if Ireland will get past the 1/4 finals. Been watching Irish rugby for far too long to dare to dream. But this feels different.
My biggest problem with this six nations performance is when we played Italy that still bothers me it was way to close, and the despite all the other wins there's wasn't a match where you could not see that same vulnerable side of Ireland...Still dont think we could outclass France at home thats why i am hoping we get New Zealand
Think I feel the same way
If they don’t it will be a choke of epic proportions from which they might not recover. Has a real feel of do or die about it. Not to be the usual pessimistic Irishman but hope the boys prove me wrong!
@@Modestasgailius Italy caused more of a problem to France than to Ireland: Italy were winning 5 minutes near the end of the game and France only won by a last gasp try to bring them 5 points ahead. Italy caused everybody headaches. Wales were the only ones to come the better of it and that was only because Italy lost their momentum in the latter stages
@@Modestasgailius We could indeed outclass France at home: They only beat Australia by a singular point at home in November and didn't beat Scotland convincingly at home either while Ireland beat Scotland far more convingly away to Scotland with 5 players injured and players having to take up unorthodox positions to see out the second half. If it was Ireland they would have put them to bed in Paris, Scotland weren't clinical enough to put the game away. most of France's recent home wins have come from lucky last minute tries to win by the skin of their teeth, but that's not enough to beat a world class team like Ireland. I can't remember when France last beat a team convingly in Paris.
If anyone told ye Scotland wouldn't score again after their try on the 17th min when they were flying you would think their nuts...
Sadly 💯
I hope you meant "they're" nuts. Either that or I think you're nuts for thinking about their nuts.
Scotland unfortunately didn’t take the two great chances they had just prior to half time. Commendably, Ireland defended well at this point.
A huge impact to Scottish chances was the fact Russell looked shattered, and undoubtedly playing last week in France.
The SRU must acknowledge that they have to pay to have the players free from club rugby for the full 8 weeks.
Result is he is injured for the Italy match
Off the ball stirring it up again, this time about the crowd booing Sexton. No mention of the Scottish fans applauding Ringrose off the pitch though!
They booed the fact he was taking over a minute to kick when it’s against the laws
Tom very insightful.
Fair play to him for coming back this morning 🤣
Everyone says the game changed around 50-60 minutes into the game, the same time JGP came on. Murray was the reason we didn’t pull away in the first half. His speed of passing is just too slow to play the game we want to play. I don’t know why no pundit has mentioned this, how Ireland played before and after JGP came on was night and day.
Not quite murray was digging on the ball in first half but for some reason 50mins in Scotland did not attack the rucks in the same way.jgp had a free ride hence speed of ball.scottish forward were just not slowing our ball
Agreed
I believe it was always the plan to play Murray to grind out the first 60 and then bring on JGP and inject high speed on a tiring Scotland, Murray is top class at what he does and Andy Farrell knows what he is doing as he has proven time and time again.
I 100% agree. Murray is trying to throw the ball out quicker but it's not as effective as JGP because he is more heads up and looking for the opposing teams weak point. Whereas Murray just throws to who is available.
Ruck was not policed well in the first half and when the Scots still had fight they made a mess of it. Murray had a lot of digging to do. By the time Park came on, Ireland had already taken the steam out of the Scots. Murray brings a calm head and is a good option in our squad. Show a bit more respect for our best ever scrumhalf.
An incredible game. Ireland, given all that went against us, were just superb. Just when you think, this is it, no hooker, flanker throwing into the lineout and if anything, we improved.
you could listen to Tom all day
Why aren't pundits talking about more about JGP seriously changing the game for ireland when he came on. The gap between him and Murray is huge. He is proving this time and again with his intelligent yet quick passing
Couldn't agree more, he just ratcheted up ball distribution at times and delayed when needed...deserves recognition
Absolutely agree, JGP first choice.
Murray clears. He just came on against people less fresh than him
Here for the Kenny Cunningham facial expressions
Came for Kennys facial reactions to the rugby hype. I wasn't disappointed
Scotland has closed the gap a bit with the top teams but not with Ireland as we've pulled away from those below the top 4.
The sad reality for me as a Scotland supporter, is that while we've made a great deal of progress in recent years, almost every other team - with perhaps the exception of Wales and England who have regressed - has also improved to a greater extent than us. Our needle is moving in the right direction, but unfortunately Ireland's needle is always way ahead of ours
I echo this as well. Scotland have improved in terms of our attacking displays. But we aren't taking big scalps against top teams. When the pressure is on we will still lose the biggest games.
Don't get me wrong, winning games is great and we have had many years of dross. But we have beaten the worst Welsh and English teams in years. The two tests on if we can perform at the top level we have failed.
Ireland keep improving. They just came to Murrayfield and completely stopped a free scoring Scotland from scoring a single point after the 17th minute. It was a display of dominance. The huge one for Ireland is the world cup. Can they do it there? I fully expect you to get out the group but the two potential opponents will make for a very tough game.
Question for Scotland is how big is the gap. If they are neglecting youth teams then they will fall off a cliff. Irish youth rugby is booming
@@michaeloconnor9809 Exactly that. I can tell you that, in Scotland, most folk only care about the national side and very few would even know when/where the U20s are playing. Although playing a far more attractive brand of rugby is pleasing, I'd almost be willing to sacrifice the results of the first XV if we were a) able to get the sort of conveyor belt of talent that Ireland is so good at producing and b) start winning things at underage level.
Alas, with the SRU as blinkered as they've always been, I have a hard time seeing that materialise
@@sbruns90
In my youth it was Gaelic games all the way, in schools and local clubs nationwide. We were not allowed to play " foreign " ( English) games. Now it's all change. Here's the analogy; dairy farmer gets more cows and more milk but also more cream. Dovetail that with southern hemisphere coaching and you are going places.
It's great to hear this about an Irish team long may it last💯❤️🩹
Well said ☘️
Sexton seemed to take a long time over the kick which irritated the Scots.
Scotland play SA before they play us...that should tell a tale.
Scottish fans booing was just stupid. They clearly don't know Sexton played in France and dealing with the noise is second nature to him. If they wanted to intimidate him they should have stayed silent! ;-)
The booing, such as it was, was only when the crowd thought/sensed that Sexton was exceeding the permitted time for the kick. There was none until that point.
@@davidcollin453 Yep I was there and I can confirm 100% that was the case. Plus worth pointing out Ringrose got as big a round of applause as I've heard at Murrayfield for an injured player when he left the pitch. I would say that's the more important rugby value in a dangerous sport.
Anyway, well done Ireland, you've done us yet again! 🤦♂
Think the fans just wanted to watch more rugby, and Sexton taking ages at kicks wasn't really neccessary.
@@c0222 If Scotland had scored 2 more converted tries, Ireland would have won by a single point. I think you are seriously underestimating the importance of those penalties and conversions kiddo!!! ;-)
@@keltiquewood what?
Scotland's problem doesn't necessarily lie with the national team. As Tom rightly says, Ireland have got into our heads at elite level, but where we're desperately lagging behind is in our youth/U20 setup. It's seriously concerning that we have such little funding in academies and a proper youth structure. Italy has shown what they can do with grassroots, and Ireland is the benchmark for what actual investment in professional rugby means. We'd do well to follow that model if we're to stand any chance of winning Grand Slams and major tournaments.
Do you think part of that is because Rugby is still kind of a niche sport in Scotland? I mean, let's be clear here. Football rules the sporting landscape in Scotland. It does in Italy too but its a larger country with more people, more resources. And it's not like Italys Rugby scene is lighting the world. The national team have improved and still can't beat an absolutely shattered Wales team at home. That shows how far down they were for this to be considered improvement. I guess what I'm saying is, building a sport in any country is hard work and takes a while. Even in countries that care about Rugby are having issues(England, Wales)all on down the board. When you have countries that don't care as much about it it makes it that much harder.
@@hellohell77 I'm not an expert by any means, but you're probably right about rugby being a niche sport still in Scotland. But in Ireland, rugby is still the third sport below GAA (football and Hurling) which is hard to get my head around. In Italy, there's so much politics within the rugby federation and they're even threatening to pull the funding from the youth setup so a lot of the issues with the national team has stemmed from catastrophic mismanagement from the top brass. In many ways, there's a lot of similarities between Scotland and Italy in the way we manage our rugby teams and until we get a properly planned, serious structure in place, we're not going to improve further.
Stephen there's still too much infighting in Scotland, The Borders and Glasgow/Edinburgh are simply not joined up. Highlands is going great guns with a great set up now - the place was jumping on Sat from 10 to 90 year olds, that can only help rugby in Inverness and it's a massive draw from the whole Highlands area.
I genuinely couldn't tell if Scotland might sneak this or if Ireland would win with a BP. When it came to thinking on their feet, Ireland won that, Scotland should have sorted the line outs with JVDF throwing but most worked.
PS far too much focus on soccer and everything that doesn't bring!!!
@@RQCK0N What I can't fathom is how untouched the Highlands is by the SRU. You think of all the clubs in the north and yet no pro side. We had a real chance when there were four regional franchises but no investment and increased infighting while paying off Murrayfield has set us back to the point where we import our players instead of nurturing them from age grade
@@sbruns90 Exactly, very blinkered. When Meggetland was being developed in Edinburgh (Boroughmuirs home ground), Edinburgh were asked "do you want us to increase crowd capacity for minimal costs to cater for your games?" "No thanks, we play at Murrayfield!" Aye with 2-3k in attendance, zero atmosphere AND all the gate receipts didn't even cover the costs of the massive National Stadium opening up!!! But now spend ££££££££'s building the new pitch etc. It's exactly that stupid mindset that holds Scotland back. Edinburgh were great to watch at Watsons ground as it was jammed with a great atmosphere, I haven't been to the new place yet but I hear it's pretty good (although it's 10 years later!).
Trade all the success of the 6 nations and a possible grand slam next weekend for progress beyond a WC quarter final (our glass ceiling). With South Africa and Scotland in the group it's going to be difficult.
God no
yeah its a real shame the groups were made 2 years ago, whoever gets through from group B will be heavily depleted compared to the other groups.

Ireland can certainly get to the final.
best sports journalist on the bbc
I was at the game. Scottish fans applauded Ringrose leaving the pitch and Sexton when he was substituted. I think they were giving him stick because he takes an age to kick if I'm honest. I live in Scotland and the Scottish are frustrated because they have a good team but have not achieved anything of merit in ages. Their time will come again. Remember the 90s when we couldn't buy a game against them.
Even though Ireland have had great teams over the last few years we lag behind the likes of Wales in 6 nations achievements although we are closing in. It was years and years of incremental progression over the past 23 years. It’s a long difficult road but the youth setup has to be right and Scotlands was almost non existent the other night in the U20s.
Townsend’s assertion that Scotland are closing the gap on Ireland is utter nonsense. Despite losing five players to injury, including both hookers, Ireland finished the game stronger and were able to keep Scotland scoreless for the bones of 65 minutes; how is that closing any gap?
Just to remind everyone it's only 4 years since England put 57 points on us in a warm up for world Cup!!! Let's not get carried away here the world Cup is the goal and its a long way away yet
the team (squad) is indeed different gravy, well said Tom English, spot on! shoulder to shoulder
It's nice to be humble and respectful, but I must admit I was a bit annoyed we Irish weren't as confident about our teams ability to do a job on Scotland as we should have been. Saw a lot of people genuinely concerned about playing the Scots when nothing really pointed against us. Even before the game we are better man for man, better in recent history, in better form across a year, better form across the tournament (with us dismantling the French, who then dismantled Scotland). In the game we took on 6 major injuries, brought a prop on to play 2, had our 7 throw into our set piece and still nearly got a 4 try bonus point. Scotland are going to finish 3rd after everyone talked them up so much as potential contenders. Back the boys more! We're the best in the world!

Zoom in on Kenny’s Cunningham face!
Tom is absolutely spot-on about J G-P; he brought the team alive and the difference was IMMEDIATE. D.J. Church for permanent hooker? (How's his throw-in?) Unbelievable all-round effort! Why is everyone on about the booing at Murrayfield? Has always been so and why should they change? (Makes them look stupid enough when the ball goes straight through posts)
Sorry but Scotland are miles behind Ireland. Hogg should have been carded in that first half. Match the players up across both teams ireland are better players. JVF best player in the world. Doris not far behind him and he went off injured very early on. Class players all over the pitch and on the bench and in the extended squad. Tom is spot on.
In 2013, away to Italy, like on Sunday, Ireland lost four or five players through injury, and Italy won.
On Sunday, the more Irish players that suffered injury, the less likely it seemed that Scotland would win.
Plus, you also have to look at the disallowed Irish try because Scotland cheated AND Luke Pearce's leaving his cards (especially his Yellow Card) at home - How Stuart Hogg didn't get carded, only God and Luke Pearce know...
and the number of times Ritchie had his hands in the ruck, slowing the ball down on the line, was blatant.
I have to laugh at the question posed to Tom English about the 'fuming Scottish crowd' & Sexton grinning. This is along the same lines as the 'put Scotland back in their box' comment on one of the Irish podcasts last week. I can understand why we are feeling so positive about Ireland at the present but, if anyone is pointing fingers at the other 6 Nations about 'arrogance', I would suggest that one or two of these pundits on the podcasts are leading the way in that regard.
The lad who said that is only a dweeb

What was the meaning of the cup Johnny got?
It's the Centenary Quaich cup, first presented in 1989. It's between Ireland and Scotland only.

Scots get high on their own supply every year. Pee-poor Wales and England flattered to deceive, theyre better than they were but come on. Ireland has a great supply it could be high as kites on but is one of the key differences. They stay grounded and focused on the job in hand. This is a really special group, with special leaders, built on really solid foundations. They deserve the success.
Best team in the world that is why. Only teams with a chance against them are NZ, SA and France. As many Irish fans point out Irelands second 15 are the second best team in the world. Slam and WC are foregone conclusions. Everyone should call it a day now.
Gave France a decent game in France as well. A team that are much better than us on paper.
Look what they did to England on their own turf.
We're not on the same level as Ireland or France but we're improving.
@@Malky24 definitely improving and absolutely played some exciting games, agree best Scottish squad in years, but, what has remained consistent for a very long time, is over-estimation of how good the team is from the team itself and the fans. Scots were openly asking what time the Tripple Crown presentation was at prior to the match against Ireland on the weekend. We'd heard all about how highly rated the team were by themselves and the fans, all the usual guff and per every year before, came up short against a comically depleted Ireland side aided by some poor refereeing. Even handicapped Ireland were resounding winners.
Ireland camp and fans showed nothing but respect on the run in to the game but I'd say most of us knew this Irish group would run Scotland off the park and it came to pass. Ireland had lineout success 70% plus vs Scotland's 60s% success with our flanker throwing and a prop playing hooker. It was the performance of a legitimate team focused on its job and one not overtly day dreaming about greatness. When things went wrong for Ireland they dug deep and backed each other, when things went wrong for the great Scotland, they froze.
Tom is bang on. The gap between Scotland and every other team is closing big time....but not Ireland. Thats the thing, due to Leinster set up they just keep getting better
Ger Gilroy gets bullied here by Tom English. Keeping quiet during kicks is a sign of respect to the game. I don't think it's solely an Irish thing either. And even if it was, it would be worth copying.
