What Difference Do Pickup Magnets Make in Jaguar Pickups? 🧲 Alnico 2 Vs Alnico 5 / 62 Vs 65 Spec

- Have you ever been unsure which magnet choice would be best for your new pickup upgrade? Or are you unsure of how the random adjectives thrown around online about the "tone" of different magnets work out in real life? Dave at Northern Pickups offers fully customisable specs on his pickups, so here's 2 different sets of pickups from him, one set that's A5 and one set that's A2 - Hopefully this video will help, with a specific focus on offset guitars!
The pickups were not set at identical heights - they were set where I thought each set sounded best. The A2 bridge pickup is a little higher than the A5 bridge, and the A2 neck pickup is a touch lower than the A5 neck. Both sets are wound by hand by Dave with Heavy Formvar coated 42AWG wire. The A5 set has slightly higher DCR, which you'd expect to result in a bit more output and midrange and a little less treble.

12:04 My Thoughts/Observations
Both sets of pickups have subtle differences whilst still sounding very Jaguar-ish. It's hard to say that I'd prefer one over the other. Great demo! Also for what it's worth I enjoyed your annotations.
Thanks Jack! Yeah they're both really great sounding pickups. Recently I've been playing the A5 set more often than the A2s. Can't go wrong with either though! 😊
Thanks very much for this! I've got an original 1972 Jaguar neck pickup for the neck position on my build but no comparable vintage pickup for the bridge. I was debating between the AVRI 62 and AVRI 65 choices and so many online talked about the hotter sound on the 65 as being preferable. After listening to them both here I discovered I have a preference for the Alnico 2/ AVRI 62.
Oh sweet, very nice mate! I'm glad the video was able to help you make up your mind 😊 I also prefer the A2 pickup set. There's a beautiful clarity and upper midrange character that you get with A2 pickups that's hard to achieve otherwise - you can add gain and low end to an A2 pickup but it's harder to add the lower mid clarity to an A5 pickup. I hope your project turns out great!
Thanks for the video! 👍👍👍
No worries, thanks for checking it out! 😊
Is the pickguard white or mint? I have the same guitar with the stock red guard.
Hiya mate, this is a "Pale Mint" guard. I got it from EarlPilanz on eBay who has a great selection of pickguards. I think a cream guard would also probably work pretty well! The mint guard really brings out the greeny-chanpagne tones in the finish, which is really nice imo. It makes it seem less silver than with a tort guard, but I think it works really well!
@@MarkB.Guitar I have a Mustang with white guard and a Bronco that resembles the Pale Mint. I have an old Regular Mint Jag guard but it was way too dark green. Thanks for the recommendation.
@@taylornutt No worries, hope it helps! I agree that regular mint can often be too dark. EarlPilanz does samples that are pretty cheap, so that's what I did. I bought 4 samples and thought pale mint looked best. If you hit me up on Instagram I think I've still got the photo comparing the 4 samples I got. Happy to send it over 😊 @markburgess32
@@MarkB.Guitar Thanks
Nicely done. I prefer the A2. But once the drummer kicks in....
Cheers mate! Ha, yeah everything changes when you're in a full band mix... 😬
Pick more subtly. Cant tell shit
Ha, sorry mate, that's just the way I play 😂 However, I would say the riffs at 3:03, 4:37, 6:54, 9:07, and 10:12 are all picked moderately or even gently. There's no room mic there, so there's no acoustic string noise in the video... I'm not sure there's anything inherent in gentle playing that would make tonal differences more obvious - if anything I'd suggest they are more likely to be apparent with harder playing than softer playing. But I think there should be enough of both throughout the video! 😊
No need to add your own opinions while you're playing, unless you just want to sway what people think.
Hey Samantha, thanks for your feedback 😊
I guess I was anticipating people to be very vocal about thinking that both sets sound identical, which they definitely don't, so I was trying to highlight the differences between the two sets and to help people pick up on the nuances between the sets. However, the video hasn't got enough views to get any negative comments, so maybe I needn't have bothered!
I don't have any stake in the magnets other people choose or use in the pickups, it doesn't matter to me what anyone else plays, as long as they're happy with their tone - but I would like to help people understand the differences between different pieces of gear and why they like/dislike what they do and what might work for them better.
But you're probably right that my captions get less objective as the video goes on and start to evidence my preferences more and more.
Whilst I can't keep everyone happy, I'll definitely bear your feedback in mind for future videos.
Thanks!
I take your meaning, but it was very easy for me to just look at the left of the screen to note when he switched between Alnico 2 and Alnico 5, and not have my objectivity compromised. Going back later and reading his subjective thoughts on each set was useful as well, so I actually prefer how he shot and edited this video.
@@Jaysthename Thanks for your feedback and support. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😄
what is that bridge?
Hello mate 😊 That's a Casterbridge. I made a video on it a little while back if you want to know more!
@@MarkB.Guitar great!!
