R I P dear sweet kind Mr. Jim Nabors. Now Nabors is singing up in Heaven among the Angels with his God gifted singing voice. I listened to Mr. Nabors' XTmas music every year as a tradition. He had an excellent powerful singing voice. He will be missed.
And a complete farce. Sorry, but nobody in a small town in the south at that time dressed like that, acted like that, or sung songs like that. This stage performance would have fit far better in Hollywood than "Mayberry."
@Falcon .. Never claimed it was a documentary. Doesn't change the fact that the show's content was grossly inaccurate and derogatory. It was entertaining because you got to laugh at others - the group of people portrayed. What other groups do you like to laugh at? Blacks? Northerners? Women?
@Falcon .. Oh, so now criticizing clearly derogatory content means you're a "woke snowflake." You're full of shit. This show, created by Hollywood (California), was intended to belittle a particular group of people. Not just this show, but dozens of such movies and shows. They wouldn't dare do the same to any other group.
@Falcon .. Okay, you keep filling yourself with delusions. If such a show was made about any other group, it would be yanked off the air immediately - and you damn know it. No other group would tolerate such bigotry and hateful stereotypes. Bet you enjoyed "Deliverance" too. Enough. You have a nice day.

Contrary to the constant inference that "Barney can't sing a lick" yes, he can. I've seen several episodes that displayed Barney's harmonizing ability and he wasn't bad at all. Granted, he wasn't Luciano Pavarotti but he STILL could carry a tune quite well and it aggravates me when people claim he can't. (I know, it's only a television show.)
Barney harmonized well with Andy on The Church in the Wildwood, the Mayberry Union High song, and A Vacant Chair. Otis sings with them in the last one.
absolute classic. A great introduction to Jim Nabors voice and our old buddy Barney's delusions of grandeur (and his voice teachers too!) Ha Ha Great post. Thanks
Contrary to the show's location plot, none typical of the south. Darn few living in North Carolina at the time had likely ever even heard Santa Lucia, with many, if not most, today the same.
@@dwightstewart7181 To be fair, the choir master says in the episode that he had the music brought in from New York. He likely heard it on vacation or something and tracked it down.
I love this episode. Just noticed that the actor playing John Masters doesn't know how to direct - his direction has a different rhythm than the music. This actor is Olan Soule. I just looked him up on IMDB. Apparently, he was quite brilliant with voices.
Olan Soule was one of the busiest actors in radio--- much sought after by radio directors for his ability to adapt his voice to any part. Surprisingly, he often played bad guys or "heavies". I read that at one time in Chicago, he had major parts in two daily radio shows that were broadcast one immediately after the other, but from different studios several miles apart. The minute finished his part in the first show, an express elevator took him immediately to the lobby and he dashed out into a waiting car for the journey to the other studio. And the two competing networks for whom he worked split the cost of the hired car! Talk about being in demand. I remember seeing him in both the early and late versions of the Dragnet TV show where he often played Ray somebody, who was the head of the scientific crime lab, and would explain to Joe Friday and partner what he's discovered about the evidence.
He's conducting in 3/4 timing and while I haven't read the music to check his rhythm, it seems to me like 4/4 timing would have worked better for the measures.
Interesting-in an earlier episode (and they always did this to Lucy in I love Lucy also)-Barney was so flat and off key-the had him singing into a dead mic during the show-this time, his voice is just thin-basically the right notes, bust thin like his voice. Wow Nabors-what a voice and WOW Don-one of the greatest!
Yeah, Santa Lucia - a great southern song about Neapolitan Italy, sung in southern Christian churches, by farmers working their fields, and the Andy Griffith show. [ all sarcasm - nobody in the south sung this ]
While Griffith could sing, his voice didn't reach the lower register heard here. His voice is being supplied by Delos Jewkes (Glen Cripes in the series), whose head is hidden by Knotts.
I'm not so sure thats the case. The voice sounds just like Griffith's. Its not really that low. Andy's singing more of an alto than he is a bass which works just fine for his register.
I’d rather see the episode when they had Italian Guests in Mayberry and in singing “The Italian National Anthem” to honor their guests, they sang Santa Lucia. Lmao
I remember that episode that introduced Jim as a new singer. My dad has some of his albums. He had a fantastic voice. RIP Gomer
