In February 2021, Yana Nykytina, an up-and-coming singer from Odesa in Ukraine, sang on the 11th season of “The Voice of Ukraine”, getting to the live televised stage on national TV. Just a year later, war broke out, and she had to flee her homeland with her mother and baby daughter, leaving her husband-also a musician-at home in Odesa to fight, finally finding safety in Dublin, Ireland.
Unbeknownst to Yana, in April Irish singer/musician Stella Bass - who had been horrified by the plight of the Ukrainian people - set up “Musicians For Ukraine” to help raise funds for humanitarian aid. The initiative saw Stella call on musician and singing colleagues from Dublin, to perform relaxed shows at lunchtime daily in a chain of coffee shops across the capital; the premise being the musicians give their time for free, and diners can enjoy some wonderful entertainment far beyond a regular lunchtime experience - and can donate if they wish. The project was initially slated to run for 3 weeks to mid-May, but has already been extended into early June due to the many musicians eager to take part. In addition, an offer was extended by the Blanchardstown Centre for two days of fundraising, with professional singers/musicians performing.
The coffee shops in question are "The Art of Coffee", set up by Ukrainian businessman Ruslan Mocharskyy, which has 13 shops dotted around Dublin’s city and suburbs. Since the war broke out, he has been at the forefront of efforts to co-ordinate humanitarian projects both in Ireland and in his homeland. He set up “The Art of Coffee Helping Ukraine Fund” which “Musicians for Ukraine” is fundraising for.
Yana, a singer and music teacher back in Odesa, saw the call Stella had put out for singers and musicians, and contacted her late one Saturday evening to see if she could take part, sending on a video of her “Voice of Ukraine” performance. They met up, and Stella invited her to perform a song in one of the Blanchardstown Centre fundraising concerts. Accompanied by acclaimed Irish musicians, pianist Padraig Kilbride (RTE Concert Orchestra, Rebecca Storm) and drummer Paul Byrne (Camille O’Sullivan), Yana fought back the tears to perform an astonishing and emotional version of Alicia Keys’ "If I Ain’t Got You", dedicating the song to her husband back home, and thanking the Irish public for their heartfelt support for her country.
Safe to say, there wasn’t a dry eye amongst those watching her performance.
