I got this guitar kit from thefretwire.com, and just a reminder you can use coupon code GUNSNGTRS to save $10 off your order there. Unboxing this kit I noticed the usual things I tend to see from any kit I get from thefretwire, the body has nice wood grain (for basswood anyway) And the neck is nice and straight, and the frets have been leveled, crowned, and sort of polished. The headstock resembles Bart Simpson more than a mosrite headstock, I imagine that is to avoid trademark issues. The neck features something really cool that I didn’t expect. A zero fret, though how it’s currently set up it’s useless with that crazy high nut piece. More on that later. The electronics come with Johnny Ramone style pickups, a mini humbucker in the neck, and a strat pickup at the bridge. None of the electronics came pre wired, but it’s a very simple setup just like the p90 jazzmaster kit I reviewed with just the two pickups, 3 way switch, master volume and master tone. Even if you don’t have any wiring or soldering skills, this should still be a piece of cake.
Building this thing was extremely easy, all the holes were pre drilled, so to assemble it all I needed was a couple of Philips head screw drivers, and a 10mm wrench.
British guy “no it’s called a 10mm spanner”
Wow my British accent sucks. Sorry guys. Not trying to offend anyone. Though I probably still did.
Wiring it was simple, except that the bridge pickup was short on its lead wires. So I had to flip it upside down and then it barely reached the selector switch. And even still, the lead wires are taught and therefore can’t follow the routing to the selector. It’s just traveling straight there over the top of the body, which makes the pickguard a bit wonky.
Overall build time was actually less than 45min. Like I said it’s a super simple build. I did the entire thing during my kids nap time, including the wiring and soldering...

I think you should paint the headstock to look like Bart Simpson.
DO IT !
YES! THIS!
I'd go one step further, yellow headstock and an orange and blue body. It would look the dogs bollocks :)
I cast my vote in favor of the Bart guitar.🤘
You guys can’t be serious. Usually with this many requests I would oblige...but I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this one...
Rest In Peace The Ramones members
Upstrokes? In a Ramones cover? Heresy!
I know I’m so lame
Hey, mannn. Why are you playing upstrokes?
Digging the profile pic 👌
Johnny Ramone only used the single coil DiMarzio FS-1. The mini humbucker was disconnected.
So he didnt Used the Humbucker at all?
@@Maddin_-tj3su no
That was later. He -only- (edit: mostly) used the stock pups from 1974 - 1979. He got about 2 years out of the stock Mosrite pups in his white one. The stock bridge pup for *this* model (Mosrite didn't make these pups for any other model) is just two bar magnets taped to a block of wood -with 8,000 K of AWG 43 wrapped around it. Neck pups are 7,000k, supposedly.- EDIT: The wire is either AWG 43 or 44, and ohmage depends on the batch of the pickups. Early ones are hotter (11k / 12kish,) later ones are from 6.8k to 8k (depending on the position of the pup.)
Also, he did have *one* backup Mosrite guitar with a P90 in the bridge (unlike Mosrite Ventures models, which do not use P90s, but use their own smaller design.) That backup guitar was a Sunburst that was stolen with Blue in October 1977.
You have to cut the nut slots down to where the strings will kiss the zero fret. The extra height in the nut holds the strings in place. A couple string trees on the center four strings helps too. I just finished mine, and it’s a monster!
Thank you so much for doing this kit! I can't wait to see the end result! GABBA GABBA HEY!
I can not wait for the video where you "dan it up". Very excited.
Cant wait to see what you do with this 1 . Your budget build videos are killer !
OMG thank you for doing this one! I was thinking of picking this kit up
man Ive grown to love these builds you put together. You finally convinced me to order a tele kit...hope it comes out as nice as your builds.
Maybe a 7-sting kit?
Just suggesting.
I’d like too. I’m about 6 kits behind right now, but I’ll get to it eventually. I’ve always wanted a 7 string.
Guns and Guitars Yeah! And I totally recommend it!
Clicked so damn fast!
Nice review , I love your transparency and honesty . Also your shirt is amazing just gonna have to save and get one !
Love your build and review vids!
You videos are getting better and better !
Dan,
Great video. I like the fact that you didn't give up on the kit. I'm excited to see how you finish it out. Great work!
Just found this channel yesterday. I can't get enough vids on hotrod-ing kits! More please. This might be my new favorite show.
Can't wait to see what you do thank you for your UA-cam channel it has helped me a great deal
Goddamn I've been looking forward to this video forever man
This is such a blessed channel thanks for the coupon code bought and finished a hofner style bass gonna put up a vid of the build thanks man
Hell yeahhh!! Cant wait!
I created a monster. I bought a cheap kit 2 years ago. Painted it.. Hung it on the wall. I recently took it to guitar shop.. Gave it some upgrades. New pups, tuners, pro setup. Still had trouble keeping tune due to a zero fret. Hung it back on the wall as art. Ok. Took it down and made some minor adjustments... Wow... Its a true monster. Seriously...major wow. Johnny Ramone would be proud of this thing. Its got his tone at every level and then some. It was a cheap kit to start but the punk rock gods blessed it.. "IT IS ALIVE"
Thanks for another excellent video!
I'm pleased I wanted one and now you made me sure to buy one
Ridickolous! Came out sounding pretty good. Nice.
Haha - I like what you did at the end there! Another great vid Dan :)
I absolutely loved this video. I liked when you played more than one part to the Ramones song and told us exactly what was wrong with the kit. You are my favourite UA-camr right now. Keep up the good work
I think from now on I'm gona watch your videos while I'm working on my 2 Fretwire bass kits
Great video as usual !!!
Love this. Want one‼️🔥🎸
Great channel. Glad you chose to fix it. We all learned a lot. Best of luck ---- and guitars.
by far my favorite channel
Great video. I recently purchased a kit myself, it’s my first built. Im doing a lot of the changes you’ve done. The one problem I’m having is removing the nut. It seems like it’s glued in. Do you have any tricks for how you got yours out
Great job once again. Keep the vids coming. I would love to see you do the fretwire's Spalty - Set Neck kit LP
Best video of yours so far~~ excellent review, work AND OF COURSE THE MEMES
Always enjoy your viedeos
Hey! I just ordered one of those kits. So I'm really anxious to see how you upgrade it =)
I like your attitude, taking it all in stride.
Dan, I love the videos, you’ve really rekindled my love for guitar and bass, and for that I am forever in debt. I’ve sent you a couple questions on Facebook, hope to hear from you soon brother. Keep the videos coming!
Hey Dan, when are we gonna see how this guitar turned out?
Dude, my wife probably thinks I have a crush on you because I watch your vids so much! Thanks for your entertaining and educational channel.
Great video man! i know wiring hollowbody guitars is a real pain, but what would you think about hollowbody bass?
I LMFAO on every one of these videos while at the same time actually learn an awful lot each time. Thanks man you rocl
rock that is, I am a spastic typist
Excellent video, love the jokes, I'm excited for the follow up.
Your videos are always so great, would to see a Höfner style bass build, love the vids keep up the good work😁
Damn I was looking forward to you finish and this guitar I don’t see the video anywhere
If you want to match Johnny's Mosrite, you'll have to get a new pickguard cuz this one has the bridge pup angled at the wrong angle. Just noticed that. Anyone know where to get a custom Mosrite one?
Hey Dan! Huge fan, love your videos on DIY guitars! Was wondering if you would ever venture into doing the electric guitar DIY kit without the headstock? Food for thought 😊
One of those videos that "in passing" teaches more than some "educational" videos. As a DIYer I tweak my bass a lot; just learned a deal more about pickup balance.
I grabbed one from DHGate. Sanded down a new nut and the string almost kiss the fretboard, and rest nice on the zero fret. If the string stay in place...will a retainer bar or string trees make a difference? Thanks
Thank for the video dude !
Can you give us the wiring diagram you used please ?
And i dont if you notice but the single coil orientation is wrong. It has to be like a Tele or Strat ;)
Here in Britain, Basswood is Limewood. Jaguar is a Car. And I'm sitting in a suit drinking tea at 9pm.
That’s why British people are so much cool. I like everything about that sentence.
Guns and Guitars Honestly, its pronounced 'Britain' not 'Britain'....😝
Nice video anyway
That looks sick. Any ideas on an iceman kit by any chance?
Hi. Thanks for the great video. I bought the kit from FretWire and will be putting it together once I gather all the parts I want on it. I am changing out the bridge pickup and pots to DiMarzio products and adding a set of Hipshot locking tuners. Is there a a good neck pickup that you recommend that will fit the pick guard?
Wait! I just watched your upgrade video on this guitar and I see that you included your recommendations for the pickups. Good job on that upgrade as well. Since I am a big Ramones fan (since I first saw them live back in the late 70's) I will build this as a tribute guitar. It will be either blue or white since those were the two colours of this guitar that Johnny Ramone was known to play. Thanks again for the great video.
Probably my favorite vid
Hey Dan,
I was wondering what recommendations you would have if I wanted to make a jazz style guitar out of the solid body strat style tomtop kit. It is my first build and I would prefer to keep it relatively cheap. I just wanted to know if you could suggest what pickups i could use. I am really inspired by your videos, great stuff.
Keep it up
Look at gfs gold foils for a really warm acoustic like clean jazzy sound.
Great build and fun to watch! Only constructive criticism, Johnny only played downstrokes. Looking forward to your next video. Well done!
IT"S PRONOUNCED MA-PLAY!!!
Is the neck as narrow as a Mosrite. I loved those necks for my smaller hands
That middle position actually sounded pretty cool
Can you build a hofner bass ?
+1
Liverpool Violin
Nice one Dan also loved the demo Can you also do some extended videos for the fun of it
Hey Dan,
Love your videos man they are so cool. If you ever happen around to it you should try and build the Fretwire HB Hollow Body Bass Kit. I'd love to see your spin on it!
What about the 7 String Guitar kit from fretwire
Could you do video showing how to guild basic guitar rigs like this one?
anyone know where I can buy this kit in the UK? ... or shipped to the UK?
That is a nice looking body shape
Supposedly the Mosrite Ventures look is based on a Stratocaster that was flipped over and re-designed a bit. They don't match up 100% if you flip a Strat over, I tried it.
Thicc
And the guitar looks good too ;)
If i have a signature guitar it should be a this kind of body
Is a version of i wanna be sedated. Good video ! Love the mosrites for the ramones
Just asking, did you finish upgrading the jazzmaster or you didn't plan on doing that?
that project got delayed. rest assured it will be the next "dream build" vid when I get around to it
Guns and Guitars oh okay, cool! 😀
Hey Dan, do you have any plans to do a 7 string guitar kit? I would definitely like to see that.
That background song is really funky man. Did you write it yourself?
The setup on the pickups made the difference really pronounced. It sounded like they were coming from different channels of a stereo. And equally balanced.
How heavy is the body . I guess what I'm asking is does it neck dive on a strap?
AWESOME (still waiting for that les Paul)
Great vid 👌 and that douse sound pretty good you’re inspiring me to finish my kit build guitar it’s been waiting for 6 years lol
6 years! Holy heck get that thing together man! You could’ve been playing it this whole time.
Guns and Guitars I’m not very confident that’s the issue and I dont want to do it wrong
Just do it wrong. Learn. Then do it right the next time.
Dude! I have a really big question. Do you think that a p90 would fit in the humbucker slot? Or what other pick up would fit?
p90's will not fit in a humbucker slot, but you can get a humbucker sized p90 that will fit. I think GFS makes them.
So any tips for if the neck pocket is too loose on a project? Or wedge in some pieces of wood either side?
I have a whole video dedicated to this lol
that middle position tone!
I think it's time to hot rod that Mossy so it's a little less sedated... THAT'S the video I want to see next!
Can you check out the 3 pickup rickenbacker kit?
How sharp is the edge near the forearm? Is it a sharp right angle like an explorer/flying v, or is it sanded/rounded at all?
It’s rounded, not sharp. But it doesn’t have a full comfort cut/bevel on it.
Thanks for the info, love your videos. Are you still planning on turning this kit into an exact replica of Johnny Ramone's Mosrite?
Looks like the pickguard didn't quite match the contours of the guitar either, or is that because you had to move it? Here in Oz, Pitbull also offer this kit and I have been thinking of getting one, so thanks for the review. Looking forward to the upgrades!
you're right, it's probably because I had to move it
Is this guitar basswood or alder? The site says alder
Awesome channel
I have never done a guitar kit before. I would really want to get into this. I had a Univox style like this once about 18 years ago. Wished I never traded it. This seems like the best way to go and your video is the only one that I have found that is very informative. What did you use to file down the nut?
it was a dremel with a sanding drum
As a long time British viewer I must say...
You're accent was actually pretty funny nice man
hopefully not offensive...thanks man
I've been thinking about either getting this or the Jazzmaster kit.
hey man great review, was really thinking of getting one of these... good to know things aren't as simple as they seem... really wish you modded it your way instead of cloning johnny ramone... would be interesting to see alternative pickups to the dimarzio...
Can you do a video of all your DIY Guitars and Basses that would be awesome!
do they have a normal mosrite?
has anyone mentioned barre chords and down strokes only yet?
Any UK people know a good place/company to get a les paul kit from?
What purpose does the 0th fret serve? Brian May explained it once but I didn't really get it
The nut piece can affect your tone, so picking an open string sounds different than picking a fretted string. The zero fret makes open strings sound like fretted strings. It also takes the guess work out of cutting a nut properly since the fret is already perfectly radiused.
Thanks! Also, you look badass without the hat xD
I'm fucking pumped for this one, you should try relicing it
I love your channel.
Have you ever made a stew mac kit
Just wondering if you have any plans to build an extended range guitar like a 7 string or 8 string? I would love to see you trick out an extended range guitar.
I would really like to. A 7 string would be a fun project.
Lemme see...I wanna Be Sedated! My all time favorite Ramones tune, great job on a diy'er guitar, Thanks
After seeing the corncob, I think that you need to start doing some Pipe build kits. There's some briar and pearwood blocks with pre drilled holes on Amazon.
have you considered reviewing a fretless bass kit ?
Hey dude you should do the mustang kit from byoguitar!!!! I’ve been thinking about one but haven’t pulled the trigger cause there’s no demos or reviews etc. thanks!!!
