Cage or no cage, you won't find me anywhere near an abalone patch. You have my respect Mr. Payne, quite an impressive pair you must have! I pray your hunting is always more successful than the Great Whites alongside you.
Awesome work life balance, what an office to be working in
Gives you tingles thinking about it.
Whatever the cost of Abalone, the risks these blokes take makes it worth the money. It has to be one of the most hazardous and least recognised jobs in the world.
Something that without the cage in these waters no thanks, but that you do have the devices for some protection it is a mitigated risk and when the Noahs arks do come, a special appearance to enjoy nature's wonders. Though that shark shown was skinny.
That was crazy ! Best 5 and half minutes of watching UA-cam I’ve had in ages.
Awsome stuff and way gutsy 🤙🇦🇺🇦🇺
Imagine what it was like for his father .....diving without that contraption. Whole other ball game.
I remember watching a documentary on this years ago and one of the divers was killed as he returned to the surface, 2 sharks hit him, the worst part was his best friend (I believe) was on the boat and watched the attack happen. A lot of respect to divers that do this for a living.
This guy is a real cowboy
If I was this Abalone fisherman,I would also wear shark mesh suit and have the shark repellent energy device turned on constantly!
Here in Northern California, Abalone divers go missing frequently - Great White Sharks, and some of them extremely large, 17 - 20 feet!
Scary, it’s the shark you don’t see though that’s the problem.
If it wanted to attack you wouldn’t see it coming.
How about an inflatable orca-shaped balloon that you attach to the cage so it floats above it ? :)
....."anti shark cage?...you go in the cage , cage goes in the water , you go in the water ,sharks in the water, our shark...farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies...."
I worked on an abalone boat for 5 years and luckily we didn’t see one but they are in the area (Tasmania)
Brilliant. Probably the best doco I have seen this year. Loving the angle on working with nature. Also liked how he learned to "move on" the White Sharks so he can get on with Abalone extraction !
Wow! The footage and storytelling is top, brave hardworking man.💯👌😎 Mate try getting one of those new Ocean Guardian electric spear, it won't hurt the shark but it will definitely avoid you.
For once the ABC produced a good story
That seal in the end is like "hey, where can I buy one of them cages?"
How about a remote controlled abolony picker..?...
Fascinating… just not for me 😅
@3:14 that's about a 3 1/2 meter male. Beautiful healthy shark.
I wonder if the cameraman was also in a motorized cage?
Couldn't pay me enough to do that without a cage, how terrifying. Totally powerless to stop anything if a large GW wants to take you.
Studies have shown that the sharks place the abalone in clusters so as to attract the edible divers to the location.
I would copy squid but instead of ink I would spray shit everywhere
No thanks ( in my best Australian accent).
The camera man floating around without a cage, no wonder that white was interested 🤣
I’m superstitious - i prefer not to wear yellow when diving. I know - irrational & silly - but that’s ‘my one NO’ when I’m diving 🙏🤪
It must be difficult getting through the metal detector at the airport with huge balls of steel.
Mark Payne for president. A REAL man.
Take my hat off to your courage sir.
a potentially dangerous occupation ,but what a way to earn a living ,those cages look expensive ,and just imagine when the divers had to go in before the cages ....cant imagine seeing them as an everyday occurrence
Amazing footage of the diver in the cage and the shark swimming around, wonder how they took it
Omg awesone footage just incredible to see the inhabitants of southern australian ocean the great whites seals and dolphins all beautiful the fishermen so brave un their cages are def the eyes of the oceans and best conservationists keep up the good work guys thankyoy 💟💯🐬🐟🐠🦈🐡
Wow , what a job , wishing this man & all like him a safe & lucrative career!
Wow, what dedication surely a wild unique job very interesting and I absolutely love love abalone shells they are gorgeous!
Cage goes in the water, you go in the water, sharks in the water.
If I was doing this line of work and a shark came at me, I would employ the "Squid Method" of escape.... only, it wouldn't be ink.
That profession must pay a LOT... If not, then it should...
I hope that "cage" doesn't give you any false security, because if a GWS wants you for lunch, there's not much you can do about it, aside from crossing your fingers while on your way back to the boat.
Holy moly what amazing footage!
I'll never take abalone and cheese sandwhich for granted again. 😁😁
Great video. Certainly learn a lot about what kind of life these divers have.
They do this around Stewart Island in New Zealand without cages and Stewart Island is a well known White Shark hot spot.
Some of those guys are crazy. This guy seems to use good caution. There is a guy named Ron Elliot who is the only diver who dives in the Farallon Islands for sea urchins. The guy dives solo and doesn’t use a cage.
Abalone divers, Great White's favorite snack. 👌🏻
Absolutely brilliant clip👍
Been in the water with one Great White shark off coast of Angola and I seriously hope I get to do it again and yes, in open water. Fact is they're A very inquisitive creatures and B got so many sensory organs so they know as in sharks what you are, some may go at you but Great Whites? Very rare they actively go for people it's mostly misidentification of you. But my favourite shark and for obvious reasons as they're so amazing and cool really and having one come right upto me and check me out before swimming off was an absolute dream come true.
abalone just don't look that tasty to me.. certainly not worth anybody dieing for..
I thought you had to free dive to get abalone.
New sub! Liked 🙏😀😊
What a fantastic little picture story. When I'm scuba diving i'm really amazed how much I haven't seen when group members get together afterwards. Always reminds me of the adage that it's the one you don't see that will get you!
nope.... nope nope nope
Hope it pays well
Respect.
I hope he is making $$$$$$$$$
Deserves it
Very interesting diving. Definitely exciting.
Loved this video! Love the ocean, great rig
Beautiful!
I have seen 15 foot great white shark at Guadalupe Island in Mexico. They are huge animals and you know they are some top predators.
NOPE NO OH HELL NO.....😳😱
Nice to hear the passion for marine life. As for sharks they were just curious and checking you out.
I am not going in to the ocean but this seems to be a great way to work relatively safe in a rough environment!
What a great video!!! He’s an amazing narrator/story teller. I could definitely listen to him tell me of his experiences 24/7! Just something about him. Plus whoever edited this, awesome job! I like that it showed a lot of what he’s talking about instead of just showing him talking about it. Mad respect for what he does! 👍✊😍
Awesome! Thank you 🙏🏻
One would think that they wouldn't leave MASSIVE, shark-sized gaps in the cage.... Put a door on those things....
For one think, find Wetsuits that are White, or Yellow. The water temp that Abalone dwell, are the same temp White Pointers thrive in. I e other thing. If you carry a good knife on your side, Everytime that shark comes by, bury that blade in its side. It's gonna reckon that YOU'RE one of those things he can find others of, that doesn't BITE back!!
Thanks - a zillion for the info - the fabulous expressions that we really value them - ITS AN UNBELIEVABLE WORLD .......
Serious question here. I'd love to get into this as a profession. I'm not the most experienced diver but i plan to change that and I'm starting my PADI dive master course in a few days. What are the next steps? Where do I go practically from there?
I’ve noticed sharks and crocodiles seems to move slowly, it’s scary knowing what they are capable of though
Spearfishing equipment would discourage the more aggressive sharks, especially if they are barbed.
Screw that
Excellent video - thank you!
Ive never tried Abalone but they must be scrumdillyicous or a thousand dollars each in the shell. Ive never had a white shark encounter and it has nothing to do with luck. I dont dive and they dont walk.
Dive carefully guys and gals.
Why don’t you use a shark déterrant like shark shield?
Here’s an idea, let’s wear a black wetsuit and try and make ourselves look like a seal as much as we can 🤦🏼
That was great thanks.
wait i live in northern california, why don't our divers use a cage? (serious question)
respect to you mate
My favourite way to hunt abalone safety is from the couch and just not hunt them
Best doco short or long I've seen all year.
If you didn't have the cage you would of been eaten by that shark.
Excellent
Strewth, i was crappin myself just watching
no way thats not a 3,5 meter shark... more like 2 meter
that was the fastest surfacing in the history of surfacing.
I would be shewing that seal away like get away seal!
Whoa !!! Just freaking amazing!!! Thank you for sharing. Need to see more of this diving and Whites !! 🦈
chasing great white sharks away so casually haha
Ya that’s a great big no fu@king way for me……
Hi. Better do not do this. My very best regards.
Such a brave guy ...Jesus. Stay safe out there, all of you brave guys
This was amazing well done!
Abalone is the best thong i ever tasted!
amazing video
Fantastic vid 😎👍🏻
That Area & coastline is among the most beautiful places on earth. It’s like a place that time forgot & truly another world under water. Beautiful documentary & If not for the implementation of that cage Abalone diving is one of the most Dangerous professions on earth. The truth is that Abalone divers & humans in general that go missing while diving & end up on the menu for white sharks are never heard from again or found. The statistics & data are unknown since conservation efforts & shark attack databases do not list these events as sharks attacks since nothing is ever found. They are simply put down as drowned or disappeared….but ask any local or fisherman in the areas that this occurs & they’ll all tell you the same thing & that is that a White Shark ate them.
What's the point of a cage if u work outside of it anyway defeats the purpose u can still get grabbed good thing about it is ur not floating on the surface and ur safe descending but then u put urself at risk getting out of it
Wish we could still get abalone in California.
Privatise the ABC.
