Yma Sumac, The Peruvian Songbird, sings "Chuncho."
She was incredible ! "Chuncho" is very impressive for the way she pass from very low notes to very high ones, "Bo Mambo", "Malambo No1", "Gopher Mambo" or "Taki rari" are probably some of her most famous songs I think
"Tumpa" is my favourite... just fckn amazing

I remember seeing Yma in a movie on TV way back in the early 60s- I think it was 'Secret of the Incas'. She sang an utterly haunting song of which I remember nothing other than it was captivating! Thank you for causing me to dig deep into my memory.

I was born in 1965 and my father had her record. We use to play her record all the time growing up. I still have the record.
Yma Sumac princesa inca. Reacciona a Chuncho, canta como las aves, no hay diferencia, saludos desde Lima Perú.
Her name is pronounced "Eema Suemac" She was very very popular in the late 1940's and early 1950's. One of the most unique singers ever.
Her whole recording work is outstanding, you will be surprised about the sounds she produces with her voice!!

Yma Sumac (Ee-mah) was a contralto, not a soprano as most people often mistake her as (including the highly inaccurate Wiki article). Although very easily able to sing as a soprano, her lower register proves she was a contralto. Her husband/manager said she was, "5 voices in one" due to her enormous range of 4 1/2 - 5 octaves.
Walt Disney picked her to sing as the characters in the cartoon's songs.
