Loving it Steve. The musicians are gonna go nuts with this. Just basic and easy way to sync the lights with their instruments. Looking forward to the next video. By the way I’m a DJ and I’m interested what you do. Stay safe 🙏🏼
Nice too see you still use the obey 40 I have always liked that line (I used to use an obey 70 but now have etc eos nomad (very high end theatre software))
This is very cool but what look really cool if you could turn it on during drum solos with these lights along with some of the other lights you've gone over in the past that move from left to right, up and down etc
Good suggestion! I want to try setting it up with my mini beam moving heads so each drum hit would change the color and direction of all the beams in unison. I think it would look awesome with the hazer going. Vibrio can change between setups very quickly and smoothly so should be pretty easy to turn on for drum solo and then off again during a show.
Hello! Can you show us a video on how to make a DMX Light show in vibrio, a normal dmx board or a software with music? I know this may be advanced but you could create a beginners guide on how to make a dmx light show for Partys and more.
Hi! Here's a video on setting up a light show with Vibrio: ua-cam.com/video/tnyVHO50Mf0/v-deo.html Here's another one that shows how you can sync a hardware controller to music: ua-cam.com/video/TlQPGW-gHGE/v-deo.html. I hope maybe those are helpful to get started. I want to make more videos on creating light shows simply so I appreciate your suggestion and thank you for watching!
Nice job. Now that's lighting at a super high level. I'm still trying to get my Lixida DMX to USB to work :( , might be nice to know that I am also a Certified "non drummer".
Hey ! Incredible video, I'll try this as soon as I can. Unfortunately, when I'm trying to download MidiPipe on my mac, the computer won't open it... I think the version is too old for my mac (version 11.4) Thanks for your help !!
Thanks for that! MidiPipe is an awesome app. I just checked their site and it looks like there are 2 versions: MidiPipe V1.6.2 (2021-04-04, 64-bit Universal Intel+ARM, macOS 10.12 to macOS 11) MidiPipe V1.4.6 (2012-05-05, 32-bit, Mac OS X 10.3.9 to macOS 10.14) So hopefully you can get one of those 2 versions to work. Good luck!
@@LearnLizard Hi again ! I actually figured out that DasLight could do the same, and even more, so I will chose this option. Thank you so much for your videos, they are life changing!

Thank you so much for your videos, I'd be completely lost without them. I'm new to moving heads and DMX programming, and have 2 questions that I think you might be able to shed some light on.... I'm a visual Artist and will be exhibiting in a gallery space. I'm looking for a focused spotlight that can pan a spot slowly around a room, continuously. I know that most moving head spots have a pan limit, so I'm wondering if I make 2 scenes, one that pans around the room to the pan limit, and the second that pans back, will putting the 2 scenes in a chase make them loop so that they perform continuously for hours? I was also wondering how slowly most affordable moving heads can pan? Because I'll be using them to spot light artwork on the walls, I need them to pan quite slowly.... Maybe 2 minutes for an entire 360 degree revolution. Thanks so much for your time and your videos. - Kage
That sounds like a great application for a focused beam mover! I think what you are trying to achieve is fairly easy. Take for example the mini moving head in this video: ua-cam.com/video/IklDtZLkAOc/v-deo.html It has a 540 degree range on its x-axis (pan) and 180 degree range on its tilt. Using a simple DMX controller (like the Obey 40) could program a chase with each scene in the chase being a piece of art being spotlighted. Then you would set the controller's speed time to 3 minutes (you can make it a maximum of 10 minutes) and it will cycle through the chase focusing the light to each piece of art for 3 minutes until you turn the chase off. Good luck and let us know how it works!
Thanks for that info. I wasn't aware of MIDI-OX. That looks like an amazing app with a whole lot of cool features besides for just MIDI remapping. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Hey, I just got a usb to dmx interface and a moving head. I’m trying to find easy midi software that can visualize a show and output it. All I can find is paid or trial midi controllers. I found one that’s free and it’s dmxcontrol. I can’t use an iPad. May you make a tutorial on dmxcontrol as people who cannot afford much equipment would find this helpful
That sounds exactly like what I was trying to do. I discovered Show Buddy's free demo software which works as a VST plugin. Here's a video showing how to use it with MIDI and then pairing it with an iPad: ua-cam.com/video/_q0ZyGS0VWQ/v-deo.html
Geeze- I actually know that, and never caught that I said the wrong thing (momentarily brain lapse while recording the video) thanks for setting me straight!!
The Pilot 2000 has a lot of nice features but I'm not sure if its available any more. Maybe I'll try making a video if I can get my hands on one. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi, great video. I have been trying to figure out if I can use my Roland Octopad to trigger my light scenes in my Obey 70. When I set it up, it did the same thing where some scenes worked and others didn't. Would you know what I would need to make this work? I'm also thinking of using Vibrio instead of the Obey.
Hi- because the Octopad outputs midi notes like the Nitro, it should work (or not work lol) similar to the way it does in the video. You will probably have to filter the MIDI stream to get it to work right. I' not as familiar with PC's but there is a Windows program similar to MidiPipe called MIDI Yoke: www.midiox.com/index.htm?www.midiox.com/myoke.htm Thanks for watching!
Hi Steve, excellent as always. Speaking of drums, is it possible to run lights via midi from an Alesis sr-16 drum machine? I have an obey 40 with midi jack. And some way for footswiching since my hands are full with guitars ? Thanks much,
Good question! (wish I still had my old SR-16 so I could try) I'm guessing that the triggering on the Obey 40 would be inconsistent without processing the MIDI signal. I had to filter out the Timing Clock data and increase the minimum velocity from the Nitro in MidiPipe to get consistent results and I'm guessing the drum machine would need a similar thing.
@@LearnLizard Loved the “non-certified drummer” disclaimer. Thanks for responding so quickly. MidiPipe experiment in my future?. You seem to be primarily a keyboard musician who has a job based on computer oriented endeavors?

Hey, thank you so much for these tutorials. I've been painstakingly trying to figure out the basics of my Obey 40 and your videos are incredibly useful. Is it possible to create a MIDI file in, say, Garageband and "play" those MIDI notes through the Obey 40 connected to a fixture? It seems like this video almost gets us there but with the added layer of the drum kit. Can the computer directly send MIDI notes to the Obey 40 and, if so, what app(s) and/or hardware would be necessary to configure this set-up?
Hi- Yes you can definitely control the Obey 40 directly from a computer or tablet. All you need is a simple MIDI interface and an app that outputs MIDI notes. (Garageband doesn't) Here's a video showing how to trigger lights from an iPad: ua-cam.com/video/TlQPGW-gHGE/v-deo.html And here's one showing how to do it on a Mac with a free app called Tracktion: ua-cam.com/video/-jNu8EJM9m8/v-deo.html Appreciate you watching!
Hi Steve, I am a drummer, and I have an Alesis strike multipad that I'd like to trigger specific chases I've designed for songs. I use the multipad mainly for click beat etc. I strike a specific pad to start the click beat for different songs - do you know if the multipad can start the light chase at the same time? This would be tremendous if possible.
Hi- You could definitely do that. I'm assuming you start your click by sending a MIDI control message to your sequencer? If you were to spit the MIDI out from the multipad (with a MIDI thru box) you could route messages to both the sequencer and DMX controller. The only tricky part would be to program the chases (or your sequencer) to start with the same message.
