It started in (I think) 1983 with the Garfield Cadets. They did the Z-Pull twice, once at the end of their opener and once at the end of the show. It started with an arc, then it split in 3 to form a rounded Z, then they rotated it outward.
god.. I have no geographical or personal ties to PHantom, but ever since I saw them perform at the First Corps Encore 40 years ago Ive been captivated by their (original) look and flavor.. While I dont approve of the lack of any true semblance in appearance to those old days, I give them credit for not pulling a Blucoats and going on an acid trip every year, or a BD with its technically excellent/perfectly executed but BORING TO DEATH shows. I *always* get choked up at Phantom closers... they are my favorite corps for emotional engagement.. Troopers my favorite for the western aesthetic that is a part of my core personality, having grown up on the Wasatch Front built up strip of Utah.
Good to know that’s where we’re screaming Suta
I was in the stands for this moment. Love the classic Z-Pull. From beginning to end, this is a great show!
Ah those Mellophones. It’s a great show, and yes, I was there too. … What is a “classic Z-Pull?”
