Edward Moran's Ship at Sea, Sunset is a haunting rumination on the declining influence of marine power, and a nostalgic glance back at a past rapidly disappearing from view. Spending his early life in Philadelphia, Moran emerged from an artistic family, studying under the marine painter James Hamilton and landscapist Paul Weber. Quickly rising to the status of the pre-eminent marine artist, Moran is most famous for a series of thirteen works representing the shifting epochs in American nautical history and the influence the turbulent seas had so far on the young nation. Influenced by the Romantic English painter Turner, Moran's epoch-making series are now housed in the New York Public Library. A leading figure in American popular art, his vivid reproductions of vast oceans and towering masts proffer a rose-tinted view of life at sea. Large in scale and ambitious in scope, Moran was not an artist to shy away from making sweeping visual statements.
Tutored by Romantic painters and embedded firmly in the Romantic mindset, Moran's Ship at Sea, Sunset is emblematic of his choice of subjects. Like the grand history painters of the English and French Academies, Moran's canvases were intricate and accurate reproductions of the historic features and construction techniques of the ships featured. His color palette, inspired by the earthy and warm tones of the German Romantics and the spiritual imaginings of the Hudson River School, envisages a sunset so lush and idyllic it could be taken only from the imagination. Ship at Sea, Sunset embodies the anxieties of the American nation at the end of the nineteenth century, veering rapidly towards total modernization and towards a position as a major world power. Iconic paintings of a bygone age and acknowledging their lineage from Western Europe, Moran's marine visions are populist reflections of a popular mindset.
