    I have over 50 airbrushes. Many Iwatas, H&S Infinity CR Plus, Silverline and Ultra. Sparmax, Tamiya, numerous Badger and Paasche models, Olympos, Holbien and many others. Best quality and performance for your money is Creos Procon Boy PS289 or PS270. Atomise the paint great. Very smooth trigger control. Easily out perform much dearer brushes. Reasonable purchase price and reasonable priced spares. Approx $120 from Spraygunner. Lots of reviews on You Tube.

    • @TheAndrian463

      Yeah, the Procon series is a really underrated product. I own the PS289 and it's a real cracker for the price. Just wish they made a 0.5mm version for the platinum series.

      Do you also have the creos ps771? Many say that it is a competitor to the takumi custom micron. I just wanted to ask for your oppinion if you have one.

      I’m still fairly new to airbrushing (really new to mini painting too). I’ve owned a Patriot 105 for nearly a year now and I’m looking to purchase myself a nice detailing airbrush for Xmas. One that I can do fine details and layering with.
      What would you say would be a good model that isn’t overly complicated in terms of breaking it down. Maybe they all are fairly similar in that way not exactly sure.

    • @peteraitken253
      @peteraitken253 6 місяців тому +1

      @Gamma_Draconis Yes . I have the PS770..Same as 771. The 771 superceded the 770. The 770 is polished . The 771 has a chrome finish.. I have seen a you tube comparison with the Custom Micron. They rate them as very similar. I rarely use my 770. As I don't do a lot of superfine detail. The PS270 is a great detail brush at half the price. I think the 771 is unnecessary unless you are doing a lot of superfine detail.

    • @peteraitken253
      @peteraitken253 6 місяців тому +1

      @terrydactyl2077 I would highly recommend the Creos PS270 if you want great detail. Fantastic airbrush. If you are in the US then Spraygunner is a great place to buy from. Most airbrushes are very similar to dismantle and reassemble.

    2:08 for me personally not because of the risk of damaging the needle, but to prevent dragging paint residue trough the body of the airbrush.

    I have used the Master for about 4 years and recently bought the Kiev, absolutely love both. G23 is perfect for priming and if you're patient you can do fine detail work too, the kiev is just sooo smooth and nice to use. If you're starting don't hesitate to get the master, it will do 98% of what the other airbrushes can do for 10 times less money.

    I'm not sure if you already cover this in another video, but I'd be interested to hear about how you decide whether to use your airbrush or a conventional brush for a particular task. Specifically when it comes to the extra fine detail work, as you mentioned you wouldn't do the base coating with your airbrush on things like belts and bracers. My reason for asking is mainly because I'm wondering if I would see a measurable benefit of "upgrading" from the Iwata HP-CS to the H&S in future, considering both are great airbrushes.

    As an owner of two Harder & Steenbeck airbrushes, I will say their customer support is amazing. Communicating via email is easy and responsive. I purchased an Infinity as my first "high end" airbrush and enjoyed it so much I ordered a custom Infinity from the factory with my name engraved. Each Infinity is set up with a different needle size for quick selection. Harder and Steenbeck products carry a higher price, their precision and support merit the premium.

    I’d like to offer a slightly different perspective. I get that a lot of people who are just getting started don’t want to overspend on gear when they don’t even know if they’re going to stick with it. Also not everyone has the disposable income to go for more upmarket tools.
    Be aware though that there’s a reason why those tools are cheap and some of the time the „cheapness“ of the tools makes working with them more frustrating and error prone than necessary and can actually make learning skills harder because they’re more frustrating and less enjoyable to use.
    As a musician I see that quite often. People want to learn to play an instrument and they go out and buy the cheapest offering available because it’s less money wasted if it turns out that they don’t want to stick with it. They then absolutely hate playing the instrument because it doesn’t sound right or it’s harder to play and keep in tune and the experience actually working with it is really not enjoyable. So they stop and come to the conclusion that it’s „just too hard“ or that they „thought they’d enjoy it more than they did“.
    More often than not they get more enjoyment out of their hobby when you show them an instrument that is one step up from cheapest, one where the manufacturer didn’t have to cut as many corners to get it to such a low price and where the build quality and ease of use is simply better.
    Doesn’t mean though that you have to go for an Iwata or a Harder and Steenbeck airbrush when you’re just getting started but more often than not getting into a hobby is more enjoyable and learning and acquiring skills is easier when you don’t go for the cheapest everything option and instead start off with one tier higher even if it makes the initial investment more expensive

    • @NikkiAnnMarie
      @NikkiAnnMarie Рік тому +3

      I partially agree, but I wouldn't say the cheaper airbrushes are comparatively that bad. Personally, I think most people are given awful advice about airbrush maintenance/use when they start, and it ends up becoming a chore. Cleaning/clogging is the pain point for a lot of people, not control, which is the main difference from a more expensive airbrush. Obviously cleaning the cheaper brushes is less enjoyable, disassembly not being as smooth, but I wouldn't say it's so much worse than an expensive one.
      That being said, some of the better airbrushes that are a step above 'cheapest' are the Iwata Neo, Sparmax Max-3, and H&S Ultra, and the build quality reflects the price increase. Also, GSI/Mr Hobby offer similar airbrushes to Iwata (some seem to come from the same factory) but are often less expensive compared.

      I got a bundle with a compressor and airbrush for around €120 four years ago and have put in 100’s if not 1000’s of hours of painting with them. Never had a single issue and they do 99% of what I want them to. I’d highly recommend giving the cheaper airbrush’s a chance, you may end up very pleasantly surprised by what you can do with them, I know I was. I was only planning on using it for a few months to get a feel for airbrushing and then upgrading the whole setup, but honestly I’ve never felt the need to, I’ll probably upgrade at some stage, but it isn’t anywhere close to a priority for me.

    • @rogthepirate4593
      @rogthepirate4593 Рік тому +1

      As a fellow musician, I at least agree in part. A good instrument does make a world of difference. As they say, buy cheap, buy twice.
      I don't think this fully translates to airbrushes though. There it really kinda depends on how you plan to use it. If all you want to do is prime, don't waste money on a high-end H&S.

    • @Numfuddle
      @Numfuddle Рік тому

      @@rogthepirate4593 true. For me it really comes down to whether a really cheap setup (cheap compressor, cheap airbrush, self built ventilation) does that. I often hear from people that they have issues with clogging or that it’s much harder to set up or clean everything. I have read people arguing that they went back to priming with rattle cans because it’s less annoying.
      It’s about the sweet spot really where the tool is built well enough to not constantly get on your nerves and where you start to enjoy using it. That’s certainly not a H&S high end airbrush but it’s not necessarily the cheapest option from Home Depot or Amazon either

    • @rogthepirate4593
      @rogthepirate4593 Рік тому

      @@Numfuddle That's fair. My first setup was basically one of those 50€ amazon china shovelware sets. Tankless compressor, an absolutely terrible airbrush. I did get a decent spray booth immediately tho, which helped.
      Eventually upgraded to a H&S Ultra, which is still pretty cheap but I daresay one of the best airbrushes in that price category. Made a huge difference, to the point that I now recommend it to everyone I know who wants to get into airbrushing.
      I've since come to use the airbrush a lot more so I eventually got a better compressor with a tank, and ended up buying one of those H&S Evolution Squidmar edition airbrushes. Very happy with that one now. But for just priming or something, that's obviously overkill.

  • @magnus0017
    @magnus0017 Рік тому

    Having just bought a new airbrush . . . Actually still really happy to see this. I wanted to get one with a pistol grip trigger because of some hand issues I've had, and it's a definite step up from the uber cheapo one I had before. I ended up spending the money getting a spray booth because I'm in an apartment, and now, being able to set up on the kitchen table instead of outside on a windy balcony, it's a good recommendation. With some good lighting, it can also be a portable painting table.
    Thanks for all your HC videos, Vince, and always looking forward to more.

      One thing not mentioned and it matters is your air supply. Dont forget to plan and budget for it. Skip using the little disposable cans, they are very over priced. Get a compressor, preferrably one with a tank. I went to 15lbs CO2 tanks from welding supplier years ago for no noise and dry air.

    I think definitely going into ease of finding replacement parts would be a good followup for this! I have a Reaper Vex, and while it's manufactured for Reaper by Badger, the parts can only be sourced through Reaper itself. I've been waiting for the replacement needle/nozzle kit to come back in stock (I bent the tip of the detail needle accidentally). I just wish I had thought of that before investing.

    Good review and congrats on the 100k! One point I do like about my H&Ss is that they can be stripped and assembled without tools, which I feel is quicker and avoids wearing the bits and pieces down before their time. Besides the "surgical" H&S 0.15, 0.2 and 0.4 millimeter sizes I keep a rather hefty Badger 175 which came with 0.52, 0.77 and 1.0 mm needles which I prefer to use for priming, varnishing and covering larger surfaces on RC model planes.

    Hi Vince. Excellent video with a lot of useful information - especially that virtually any (non-trash!) airbrush is good for things like priming. I have about 5 including a couple of Neo TRN2's that I use for priming and clear-coating - one I use for acrylics, the other for lacquers. The bigger cups are useful when working on the larger models I tend to do mostly. I also have an Iwata HP-CS for precision work. I must admit that I often have a love-hate relationship with my airbrushes as getting them to "behave" can sometimes be difficult. Balancing air pressure, paint thinning and spray distance still seems to be a hit and miss 😔 Now that you have done a basic introduction to the airbrushes maybe a series on how to use them effectively and how to avoid issues may be useful. There are many airbrush tutorial videos on UA-cam but only a few have your soothing tones. Since your airbrushes look suitably "used" perhaps you could start with an update to HC213 - how to clean your airbrush? 😉

    I started out with a really cheap chinaware airbrush and a tankless compressor. Priming and basecoating was really easy with it, but it definitely felt too clumsy for much else.
    Then I tried the Iwata Eclipse my buddy had. Worlds apart.
    I sprang for a H&S Ultra, which is still fairly cheap (50 or so bucks) but works a lot better. Still keep it around for more rough work that I don't want to subject my better one to.
    Today I mostly use a H&S Evolution Silverline (yeah, the Squidmar edition lol) and a decent compressor with a tank, and it does make a huge difference. I'm still working out some things with it, it still clogs on me more than I feel it should, and I'm still experimenting with how I can best use it in my painting workflow, but I definitely don't regret getting it.

    I've used a Patriot 105 as my workhorse for a 4 or 5 years, and have been slowly opening up to adding a new brush to do finer work. Sadly, Badger has seemed to develop a reputation about up-and-down QC since 2020 (I just assume the pandemic wrecked them, honestly), and my default 'I want a Krome or Sotar' thought has begun to fade and I've considered more and more about trying another Iwata (the Neo and Revolution I own have not been reliable) in the HP-CS, though the H&S Evolution and Infinity have been tempting. There's a myriad of options, regardless.

The CoP has a 0.4mm dual taper needle (and hitting that part of the needle where it tapers on your draw back is…hard to get used to)…I think the Kyiv has their dual taper too (I think after the CoP they made it standard) but much less so.
    Also the 2ml cup vs 5…2 is perfection for me. The 5 is a little big.

    Hi Vince, first of all thanks for all the great quality content you put online, what you do here is invaluable, I'm learning a lot thanks to you!
    Don't know if maybe you already did a video on this specific topic (I've watched a lot, but not all of your videos yet :D) but I would like to learn more about air pressure settings related to airbrushing. More specifically, which range of pressure do you find good for miniature paining and how do you decide the specific value? Do you usually set a certain value in the compressor and then you push the air trigger all the way down (so basically controlling only the amount of paint with your finger) or do you prefer to control both together with the trigger? I mean, I know that the dual action is a great feature that gives a lot more control but I'm wondering if that's always used by experts like you also at the tiny size of the miniatures we usually paint.
    Thanks again and congratulation for reaching 100k subscribers, well deserved!

    One thing to consider when comparing price-performance ratio is where you live. I come from Germany, near Hamburg (where H&S comes from), and here Badger and H&S are a lot closer in price than in most parts of the rest of the world. Also, you'll never have issues with replacement parts for H&S here. There was no question for me which airbrush to buy as an upgrade over my old no-brand 30€ airbrush.

      Take it from someone who has a small place with no closed rooms - it's essentially one large room with a few half walls dividing it up a bit. An airbrush setup for miniature acrylics isn't nearly as messy as you may think. There are small tankless compressors that do at least a basic job (although I would recommend a compressor with a small tank, they're not too big and make a lot of difference by keeping the pressure consistent), and a little spray booth with extractor hose that will fit through a cracked window is more than enough. Those aren't too expensive, and the one I have is even portable, the whole booth can fold up. It works like a charm too, to the point that I don't use a mask because it pulls the aerosols (what little there are from acrylics) into the filter immediately.

I could not remove the part that's stucked inside and guess it is a good time to upgrade. Looks like Iwata HP-CS is a good choice since it will be my work horse. I promise to take care of it 😅

    The state of decay your airbrushes are in are clear blessings from the grandfather. Nurgle has blessed you, rejoice!

    At present I've got a VigiArt HS-30 (currently with a 0.5mm needle in it, stock is 0.3mm) as well as a Madworks M201 (product comes from the same factory as Iwata bodies do), and while I haven't used the Madworks one (compressor's tank gained a mysterious rattle alongside rust, so it's being replaced) there is a noticeable difference in the smoothness of the two, with the Madworks also having a little more resistance the further you pull the trigger back. One of these days I'd love to try out a Harder & Steenback just to see what my thoughts are, although I suspect I'll wind up setting my sights more on a trigger brush as the higher end one due to my wrists having repetitive strain injury and a few other things (in short, hands can cramp up rather quickly when doing some things).
    Thanks for doing such a thorough overview of a wide selection of airbrushes, and what they can bring to the table, it's rather refreshing to see an actual comparison alongside reasons why one might pick one or the other. Any particular reason Paasche isn't in here?

      The short answer on Paasche is I've never really liked them or found them to have the quality sadly. The trigger makes total sense with that kind of injury.

    Great video, thanks Vince!
    I think it would be interesting to see your opinion on the Harder and Steenbeck Evolution - on paper it seems like a very similar airbrush to the infinity (most parts are interchangeable) but with a much lower price tag/no trigger lock. i.e., is there really a difference between a 0.2mm evolution and 0.2mm infinity?

    • @mcampbell1124
      @mcampbell1124 Рік тому

      Most obvious difference is the weight. Infinity bodies are aluminum and weigh about half of a Evolution.

      @@mcampbell1124 As far as I am aware, only the Kyiv Infinity and some other special editions have an aluminium body, similar to the Evolution ALplus. I believe the regular versions of both are nickel plated brass, and in the case of CRplus versions, chrome plated.
      The only tangible feature differences I can find between the evolution and infinity are the quick fix stop, trigger tension adjustment and overall aesthetics, which I don't personally see as worth the substantial extra cost. That's really why I ask the question, as the internals/trigger mechanism might make a worthwhile difference in the feel/control between the two brushes.

      Yeah, there is a weight and a little bit of a quality difference in the precision. If you're starting, no huge differences, as you skill up, you feel it more.

    Taking the needle out the front also helps keep the back of the airbrush clean.

    You're right about trigger control being what matters. I can pull hairlines with any of those brushes.And in reality, the Infinity requires some modding to make it an outstanding brush. But without those mods it can't compare to the Hi-Line.
