I'm so glad to find out that you're still playing Shadows of Brimstone with your new group. Please post some campaign review for the Norse adventures box.
The quickstart is 80% same as Arena the Contest and like that one, actually gets you going quickly. You use the rulebook as a reference. Combat/questing is straightforward. It's the campaign and City and World phases we found fiddly.
I so wanted to love this but I think Arena the Contest is the better game, and this is a gigantic expansion for it. ATC was a perfect game with a thin campaign. This added a campaign but way to much fiddliness and weight. Maybe it's better with the ultimate rulebook so less flipping? It also weighs down the perfect combat with another layer of skills. I mean, they're... fine. But could really do without them. So for me this is a huge box of models, and new cards of every type for ATC.
Hey there! We have sent (one minute ago) another email with question about a (p)review to you just in case the previous one wasn't delivered. Please check your spam inbox, because we had some issues with that lately. Or please let us know here if you're not interested, but we think our dungeon crawler roll and write could be fun for you. :)
Hey! I wrote an email to you some time ago about my dungeon crawler game: 'Monster Kill' but I guess the email didn't arrive :) Today I wrote again, please check your spam folder because maybe my mail is cheating me :) Super job you doing here! Regards
Actually it's quite easy to manage solo it's somewhat similar to Tales of the Red Dragon inn in that you have 4 skills and some basic moves/items. Also as far as Arena it is definitely an adventure game with a great story and puzzles etc.
That "incoming ASMR" cracked me up 😂. And now that I've watched the rest of the video... Love the art in this. Looks interesting. Would love to hear what your group thinks of it once you've had a chance to play through it a bit.
Thanks for covering this game. I am waiting for my copy to arrive shortly and really looking forward to it. This publisher has just improved this game year after year and this is a very good sign. I am one of your viewers that prefer games like this.
I was an original backer of their very first KS project and after receiving updates and expansions, it was just to much to keep track of. This single-solution box looks really well done and reinforces why I now wait for updated editions / printings with these types of games - it always seems to work out better. I didn't realize there was a standee version, so when that hits retail I might actually look into picking it up. I liked what I had with the original stuff, but I'm on miniature overload at this point. I love them, but at some point you have to make choices. I bet the standees are great, given the art!
Also be happy that they revamped the rulebook so they should be easier to navigate than the version I have which requires constant flipping among different books.
The crazy thing is that what you've got here is only about half of the content for the game. There's around another 20 - 30 heros, way more enemy types, dragons, etc, and I believe more quests. But they were Stretch Goals and KS Exclusives. I went for the All In, which consists of two massive boxes as opposed to just the one! 🤯
@@TheDungeonDivebut the quests/scenarios are mostly set piece arena fights. Not dungeon crawling. and if you notice, most of the maps look pretty much the same. They don't have that many feature tiles to break it up, visually and make it look different from quest to quest.
@@TheDungeonDivethis game really shines in combat. The quick start is actually 95% of what you need to get through a quest. If you want more exploration and dungeon crawl I think you can use it as a tool kit to run your own little adventures. Those NPC cards could be put in different rooms along with some treasure cards and you could of course draw monsters randomly.
Disclaimer: I usually like big games. This Tanares was a lot. But too convoluted, clunky and big for no good (talking about the first not consolidated edition, so not the box you're showing). At least for solo playing. And too puzzly for my taste as well. Arena the Contest was great, this one not. Sold it.
I went all-in with this one. The more I read about it, the more it felt like a board game version of Final Fantasy Tactics. I received the first two big boxes, but I haven’t dug into it yet. I hope I’m right. My impression is that it’s a grid-based, skirmish adventure game where each encounter has some special rule, terrain element, monster, and/or NPC. And when adventuring, your choices matter, branching into many possible adventures and encounters. Really looking forward to this one.
I still dont know about this one, will have to see once it arrived but Tanares was a let down for me, hope they fixed all the problems with it, but getting a new campaign a month after delivery with all the fixes left a bad taste.
@@TheDungeonDive I tried to learn the game same way as I always do, play a session by myself. It was very hard work, it had you swap between 4 different books and text on cards constantly during the tutorial. I think they changed it so now you can just keep reading in the same book, but it used to be where a paragraph would (for example) say to continue reading on page X in book Y, and once there it would have you find a card and this card had more intructions which ended up leading you to book X page A, and there it would refer you to keep on reading on in another book. Once you were done with the instruction it was sometimes hard to figure out where the next instructions were. It was just a terrible onboarding process during this tutorial, which lasts 3 sessions. I never got to the meat of the campaign because I kind of gave up when I found out they acknowledged the problem and a new campaign was on its way to fix issues.
@@TheDungeonDive Nah, ASMR does nothing for me. But, it reminded me of the cringe ASMR videos that have popped up as suggestions on YT or Twitch. Maybe if you wore scantily clad clothing and the mic picked up your breathing, but even then....you're not my type. LOL
I passed on the first Kickstarter for arena the contest bc it really seemed like it was PVP. Sometime during the campaign it morphed into this combo of PVP and scenario based tactical coop game. I went all in for the second campaign and Tanares adventures and the rpg. The company has been great for supporting the gameplay as well as replacing damaged components. I really enjoy arena and Tanares, with Tanares being superior. I have all the toys, including the insane elder dragon and dragon collection. Painting as I go, but this means big delays in progression when some of those big baddies show up. Not sure if my game storage can handle any more of these huge space hogs, so I fully support companies offering standee versions. I hope you get to play and enjoy it. 👍👍
I'm a bit confused. Are Tanares Adventures and the Ultimate Edition the same thing, just upgraded, or are they different? Is there anyone who can explain this to me?😊
It’s not the reading I dislike its the time. I LOVE reading. I have a whole channel devoted to books. And my library of fantasy and SF is massive! I just like to focus on the game play, and usually the writing in board games is really bad. Narrative campaigns are just my least favorite kind of campaign, so it takes a really good one for me to get into.
Massive content -wow! Daniel, I’ve been considering two solo Hollandspiele games: City of Six Moons (components and rules written entirely in an alien civilization’s picto-language) and the Pet Semetary-esque, But Then She Came Back. Have you seen these games? Not dungeon crawlers, but looking very thematic and innovative.
Im sorting all my expansions into my Biiig storage solution that take two Kallax slots, taking a break ckecking some youtube, and there you are doing an Unboxing :D excellent timing.
I have 140 hours in Elden Ring, but I just barely got to NG+1! I play games really slowly, I guess. I did do a bunch of sidequests to get some well hidden items and that took awhile.
My NG+3 character is my second character. I had one with over a hundred hours before and deleted it. :). I just beat it for the first time about 6 months ago. Then I was able to fly through the next 2 cycles.
@@TheDungeonDive Ah that makes sense! That's how I played Dark Souls 1 and 2. Quit my first character after a bunch of hours and flew through it with the new one. DS3, Bloodborne, and Elden all have only a single character that I did everything with and all of them around 100+ hours. I don't know if you have played Bloodborne, but oh boy it's awesome. Wish they would re-release it on PC and with remastered graphics.
It’s not the stats I’m worried about. It’s the enemies health pools and damage levels increasing in NG+3, and that From always makes their DLC much more difficult than the base game.
Unfortunately Dragori are very reluctant to promote it (it has less heroes and none of the pvp element and no extra mini campaigns). Seems more an experiment to see if anyone would bite. I did though as It has the main guts of the game (the pve story) and I wasn't too bothered about pvp. Not sure why they didn't do what oathsworn did and have exactly the same game as the minis version though
I backed the first Tanares campaign and so got Arena, the Dragon collection and the Legendary Box (extra characters, bosses and terrain), several months before Tanares. Got all that painted up and was playing when Tanares arrived. Hadn't even fully unpacked it when Dragori announced a new campaign with fixes for the game that I hadn't played, extra characters and a storage solution. Initially I backed for these. Then I considered the wisdom of paying around another £160 for a game that I had already spent about £300 on. I cancelled my pledge. This put me off, and I still haven't got it to the table, or painted any of it. I did try to sell it, but no-one was interested, even at half the price it was being listed for. So I still have it. Maybe your content will inspire me to give it a try? I do still play and enjoy Arena and am interested to see the Odalin campaign. Although part of me will be holding back after the experience with Tanares.
Wow it's so great to see Tanares content on your channel. Was a little underwhelmed that it was an unboxing video (there's tons of those for this game already) which is not the kind of content that I usually associate with your excellent channel (which has lots of in-depth videos, reviews and showcases of stuff). Nevertheless this unboxing is sort of entertaining as we can see your initial reaction to what comes in the box without any previous knowledge. I, myself, have pretty much all content for Tanares and have played some of the Tanares campaign but stopped to wait for the excellent tweaks of the ultimate version. It will still take some time to arrive in Brazil but I'm so keen to having it back in the table again. I really would like to see some Tanares content in your channel more in line to the content I'm used to see for other games i.e. "one think I like about", "masterclass", reviews, etc.
I've always done unboxings, just not a lot (League of Dungeoneers, Dungeon Crusade, and Dungeon Universalis all have SUPER long, multiple episode unboxing videos). Sometimes I need easy episodes that don't take a lot effort because I'm super busy, or just not able to get something with more depth produced, especially when the episodes I do put a lot of effort into don't get as many views as the unboxing videos. :) Luckily for you I also discuss things while I'm unboxing! Sometimes I just have to do the videos that pay the bills, and there will probably be more in the future because I gotta pay more bills to keep the channel going. :) I also find them relaxing to watch, and enjoy watching them.
I've bought every Kickstarter for Arena (Tanares) - I now have so much crap being a completionist that i don't even know how to put it away in the new boxes or even what i should have with all my purchases; what to keep, what's not needed anymore, etc. etc... . It is actually so overwhelming i almost don't even want to play it. Kind of sad, but it taught me that games that do more with less are better for my playstyle and getting to the table, (Except Shadows of Brimstone - Bring me the Egyptians !) Just as you said, the same with league of Dungeoneers and Dungeon Universalis - I haven't even fully played them yet.
