Abi's content has really improved. Her rebrand is very organic & true to her brand :).
aww this has made my day, thank you so much!
One of the best pieces of advice I got was from a fellow artist who told me that people should never go to art school to learn the rules so they could follow them, but that they should go to art school to learn what the rules are so they can break them effectively.
I think a lot of that applies to design work. My favorite one to break in my day-to-day work is the idea that everything has to be hierarchical; as if there's some magical outline for your design that you need to shoehorn everything into, when in reality examples exist (like yours) where the impact is completely lost by this thinking and breaking it (as you did) makes for a much harder hitting design.
I think it's a good rule of thumb to know the "rules" and why they exist, but to not treat them as absolutes. No great designer or artist got there by cracking a rule book and consulting before putting brush to canvas!
THANK YOU for being so consistent, I literally find motivation and inspiration in every single one of your
videos. You’re forever going to be my favorite UA-camr 🤩💕
Thank you for always supporting and sharing the love!!! Never goes unnoticed🧡 always look out for your comment!!!
Marvellous video... I've seen many videos on rules of graphic design but this has to be the best one yet. You really made it easy for us to grasp the design rules including the proper way to break it. I really learned a lot. Thanks🙏
Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed the twist with this one! Think it can be so overwhelming hearing designers telling you to stick to specific rules, so wanted to show how to break them well! 🥳
Love these explanations! I need to challenge myself more with breaking the rules. At 3:08 I like how my eye went from the top right, swooshed down to the headline and naturally to the button last. Great job on that layout!
Before I watched your channel / started my Instagram page, I was following those design rules as well. Seeing everyone’s work and how much freedom there was to create something was truly mind blowing to me. Usually your told it doesn’t suit the brand or it needs to be a certain style - something to make you change the style you want to create. This video was very helpful to understand the two and find a common ground between both sides.
Thank you a-lot, every time I watch your videos i end up with a new and good information i can apply on my designs!
I’m obsessed with your videos! You really inspire me as a designer and I just wanted to thank you! ❤️
Thank you Chantelle 💛💛 The reason I make these videos is to have that exact impact on people and it makes me happy to know I am x
I love watching your channel it’s always helping me improve my graphic design work
Thank you so much! I’m glad it’s helping 🧡
I remember my first year of design school. I went in it having a background in fine art and did a lot of drawing. I looked at design as on in the same. Then I was hit with all these rules and noticed the students who didn’t have any art background thrived Implementing these rules. I was not a fan at all lol I was told by one of my professors that art was right brain n design is more left brain. I hated that idea. Another professor told me design is a bit of both right n left brain and idk that really helped me. Hierarchy, balance, space and all that stuff was always a part of my process I just didn’t notice it. Knowing about design rules helped me to work faster and efficient. Knowing the “rules” helped me to be a better designer but also made me realize when I was breaking the rules. That, in it self felt freeing. When things are not working in a design I wonder what rules I can break and that usually gets my creativity going.
Yes to this!!! Love this, so true, it's about knowing the rules so you can understand which ones you can break in certain scenarios😊
Really awesome video! I really like the idea of designing with the rules in mind - but also challenging them to improve impact! Loved the before and after!
Thank you!!! Yes, think it’s always important to push every rule to see what can be created!!! X
you are single handedly improving my graphic design capabilities! Thank you!
Oh wow, I’m glad my content is helping!!! Thank you for the kind comment🧡
Thank you a lot Abi this video is very helpful also I took notes on Milanote from this video to always remember thank you again for this video.
Thank you abi!
Your motion design is getting better too
My pleasure!! Got my editor to thank for that 🥳
Awesome content, not an graphic designer just a software developer looking to improve graphic skills.
This reminds me of software patterns they are taught as hard rules but must be broken from time to time.
A new dev does not know them well.
A good dev uses them always without exceptions.
A great dev knows when to apply them.
Thank you 😊Interesting to know that this applies to other industries as well!
Such a great video, very well presented and fab content/ tips and tricks. Thanks Abi!!!
Thanks so much for the feedback!! Glad this video was helpful x
Hi Abi! Love your videos! Will you be doing a course for people who wants to be graphic designers? Because if you do, I'd gladly play for it!

I’m so so glad you enjoyed the video!! I know how overwhelming it can be when people are talking about design rules!! X
Priceless information love you😍
I'm feeling so free after watching this😊
Great to hear! Design rules can sure effect your creativity
I love the way you think and explain your graphic design thought process. Will you be offering a design course in the future?
This is so nice to hear, because a lot of time goes into the planning of the videos to ensure it's explained in an easily digestible way! And yes I've currently been working on one bts! Hoping to bring it out in June/July 😊
Also if you're wondering what it would be on then this video goes over it briefly! ua-cam.com/video/OzbuxPKetIc/v-deo.html&lc=Ugx57K4LGLb-8iAsWDt4AaABAg
Yes!! Very well said! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you!!
This technique is brilliant! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you so much!
You're the best! 😘👍😉
I finally found this type of video 😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The golden ratio is one of the biggest myths and holdbacks to creativity
I think it has it's cases, where it makes sense to use, but I do agree, a lot of the time, it isn't needed!
Would you mind sharing the book you were referencing at the beginning of the video?
Awesome 👌👌
Thank you!
Incredible video!
Thanks so much!
my EXPERT client would reject the "breaking rule thing" in a moment
This is amazing 🤩
Thank you lovely!! Glad you enjoyed it x
If was quite helpful ☺️
I’m glad 😎
I've been wondering how subjective "Visual Hierarchy" is because my eyes went directly to the Type first on both "Shoes for the soul" graphics. But I'm pretty biased to favor typography.
Yes this can be very subjective, to be honest design in general is very subjective as a whole!
I'm not a typography person but my eyes went directly for "shoes for the soul" first. I completely ignored the picture of shoes itself and I was surprised that supposed to be the focal point of the whole image because for me it was almost invisible O_O
can anyone suggest some good design-related books? just to get more knowledgeable as a young designer
Oh yeeeeees!
Great
Thanks!
ok tho, this editing Abi!
Shoutout to my editor!!!!
Hi Abi, please what book were you flipping through in the video?
Hi, maybe a book from Radim Malinic

Some rules are just there to be broken ✌💁♀️ just as long as you know it 😅
They really are 🤣 love experimenting with breaking them!!! Design would be boring without doing this lol
@@abiconnick so true!!!
What book is that you were looking at?
