Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue has always been one of my favorite pieces, with its cumulative power and insistent repetition, but watching someone play it on the organ didn't add to my experience of just listening to it. In fact it can be distracting to watch the elaborate gymnastics the organist has to bring off. Early Music Alberta's performance is a perfect way to watch it, beautifully played with all the components made visible.
This piece brings me to my knees every time... beautiful, poignant, powerful. Brilliantly done!
Matt Smith so true my friend, so true
Amen to that.
The piece is so exquisite that it even sounds well with simple whistles...
sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my password. I love any assistance you can offer me
@Brett Lochlan Instablaster ;)

Behind words
Это гениально!!!! Браво Бах и исполнителям, которые смогли понять это произведение!!!!!!!
magnificent, extraordinary, congratulations!
This video is truly a gift.
I can't believe I missed this performance all this time!....An instant favorite with me ......Incredible timbre ....Might be exactly what Bach in mind!
You can bet your bippie that if Bach had wanted to write it for strings he certainly would have done so (see Brandenburgs #3 & #6). This is core repertoire for organists, the core of the core in fact. This transcription is marvelous in its own right, and in that it makes the connection to Bach's own past clear.
beautiful arrangement, thank you so much! that pizzicato part was amazing!
Goosebumps. Thank you!
Very nice! Also, that bassist is such an unbelievably good sport 😂
Amazing
Beautiful performance. Compliment!

ik ben stomverbaasd dat zoiets mogelijk is ! Mijn dank is groot ! !
This is absolutely stunning!! I’m working on an arrangement of this piece for 5 flutes currently, it’s very amusing to see you divided up the voices almost exactly the way I did :))
Clarification: 2 Concert Flutes, Alto Flute, Bass Flute and Contrabass Flute - not 5 Concert Flutes!!
Un bello.concerto
Music during the Creation! ♥️
❤️💕💕
Awesome
Curious to know why it's transposed to G sharp minor. Can some of the instruments not cover the original C minor range?
The lowest viol can only play down to the low A (baroque tuning A415), so yes to answer your question.
Nathan Hillman Thanks! 👍 explains why I’m hearing G sharp based on A440, equating to A in A415.
@@njhcomposer There are many Baroque pitches. A415 is "chamber pitch" (Kammerton), which is just one of several pitches used in the Late Baroque.
This ensemble is tuned to chamber pitch. The "lowest viol" in this ensemble is a violone in G, which means that its lowest note is the G that is one octave below the G line on the bass clef. So the lowest note this instrument can play is actually a whole step lower than you thought.
The ensemble is playing the Passacaglia in an arrangement in A minor, which is a minor 3rd below the original key.
Transposing to A minor makes sense to take advantage of the open strings on these instruments.
topissimo
remains the toppest
Excellent! Thanks!
I usually tire of this piece part way through. I can take only so many inversions, mirrorings and such mechanics. This rendition on gambas held me all the way through, though. Thank you very much! I have a quibble - at least on my headset I was completely unable to discern the harpsichord continuo. All the other voices came through clearly. Thanks again.
One of the few places I disagreed with your Meditations, Marcus, is when you disapproved of music because it stimulates our emotions. I'm glad to see that you've relented, even if it took you 18 centuries.
Beautiful instruments beautiful girls beautiful sounds
What is the difference between a bass viol and a consort bass viol?
String length; the consort bass has a longer vibrating string length. 72cm vs 80cm, or something like that (these instruments vary much more than members of the violin family).
If you play electric bass, think short scale (30", EB3) vs long scale (34", P-bass).
To play the piece in the Original Key (C Minor) I'd have to tune all the instruments up a Minor Third from Standard Tuning by using slightly ligher gauge strings built for that higher tuning.
it's an ok interpretation, minor complaint you should be more careful you are off by a full quarter tone at some points
