Then he very cleverly opens up a 32" reeds to make an illusion that pedal melody is going even octave lower. Later, that sudden change to major at 7:55, and that perfect rubato at 8:39. One of the greatest organists alive, on one of the most fantastic instruments ever constructed. Parts of this song can only be described as devastating
piece man, piece, not song :P unfortunately, this organ is now pure crap compared to what it used to be at time Cavaillé-Coll finished his works on it. It's sad but people reworked this organ too many times since Cavaillé-Coll, it lacks the original sound, and currently it's just loud but I can't say I like the sound. St. Sulpice in Paris (it's like 2km away from Notre-Dame), St. Ouen (or Audoin, in Rouen) are great examples of Cavaillé-Coll organs that retained their original sound (C-C sound) to present time. I guess those two are the best Cavaillé-Coll organs in the world right now.
Excuse me for asking, but how would you know how this organ souded when Coll finished working on it?... I think you weren't alive back then ;) and don't say because you heard Ouen and Sulpice... those are differente instruments. :) I understand your point of view when you say it has been "reworked" a heck of a lot and that this can decharacterise the instrument (maybe that's the case here) but that doesn't mean that this organ is total crap... Not to forget that the professionals that worked on it are indeed professionals... I doubt they would have hired amateur organbuilders to work on this organ ;)
i did some deep research on that, there are people writing their master thesis' about that instrument. And yes, originally it sounded similar to St. Sulpice, in fact, all Cavaillé-Coll organs that are not reworked sound unique but similar at the same time, you just know when you hear C-C, let it be Sacré Coeur, St. Sulpice or St. Ouen. Notre Dame currently doesn't sound as a Cavaillé-Coll instrument. And don't get fooled, maybe we have better technologies today, but organbuilding is an art, needs some craftsmanship, Cavaillé-Coll was indeed an artisan, he felt, what's right, he was addicted to perfection, he even funded more stops than what was ordered just for feeling that the organ deserves it, his company was always on the border of bankrupt, despite being world-wide famous even during his life. Take E.F. Walcker - they got chosen to build the famous Riga dom organ, now 150 years ago, they weren't chosen to do the restauration works, because they're not good enough. You can be a proffessional but that doesn't mean you're good enough. This organ maybe is not a total crap in pianos, but when on pleno, yikes
I recently had the privilege of hearing him perform this piece live at the Minnesota Beethoven Festival. Incredible experience, he sounds just as good live.
I heard him play it in November in Kansas City, then again a week later in Washington, D.C. Note-perfect both times. I went up to M. Latry afterwards and told him I'd been at both concerts. He looked shocked and didn't say a word. I felt embarrassed.

David Snyder Lumierist... He's amazing the only organist who can make Bach sound like Bach. Everybody else sounds weak at the keybords, at least in my humble opinion!
Very interesting thought about Bach. You mentioned "sounding" like Bach". Actually Bach sounds like nothing ! Think about it for a moment. Bach composed music represented by "notes" that he placed for us onto a score. That in its purest form only,, IS Bach,,a silent, lifeless printed page waiting to be brought to life by a musician. Every musician who takes those silent notes and reads and then plays those notes brings Bachs' music to life just as the sun brings a dull dead stained glass window to glorious life .If you want pure Bach, buy a sheet of his music and sit and read it in silence. If you want Bach's glorious music take that sheet of notes and go to the instrument and put your soul into expressing his written notes,, or listen to a great artist who takes those notes and brings them to life. Give his works the best of your creative spirit by you interpreting his printed notes that are true gifts to us from our and his creator. Try it. David Snyder, Lumierist
The grand organ of Cathedral de Notre dame is so beautiful. It’s a shame to think all the pipe work is in boxes. And no mere fire could destroy this organ! It's alive! Well, it will be. Since the church is being rebuilt, the organ was dismantled and will be updated and refurbished elsewhere, then reinstalled when the church repairs are complete.
JSB, one of my favourite composer but do you think he really meant to write the dis-chordent melodies, major against the minor at 6:24+ I'm only a woodwind player lol so any clarification would be nice... Thanks
During that section of the piece, Olivier seemed to be playing it with a flute stop and a mutation. The mutation stop would play semitones above the actual note played. For instance, playing a C might give you C and E simultaneously to give it a unique voicing quality. That could have something to do with why one might perceive it as a little dischordant.
I've heard this chart numerous times so I knew it wasn't JS Bach but the organist. I wondered what was going on, then I realized that the organist had a mixture set (in this case a mutation - not familiar with organ terminology) that was throwing a major 3rd harmonic into the mix. Unfortunately the chart is in a minor key so you get the major 3rd mutation followed immediately by the minor arpeggio which makes for a weird transition.
In less than 50 years this storied cathedral which has witnessed more French history than 10 million Frenchmen combined will have been converted to a mosque and this organ will be silenced forever along with Bach's music and just about everything else that Europe gave the world.
Hearing this organ in full cry, in its environment, is an awesome experience.

Very interesting to see footage of the organ pre-chamades and with the original Cavaillé-Coll console...
Kind of wish they would've kept it that way
Melodramatic music ! So epic for my ears !
Majestueux et magistral...!
Yes, you are right. That is not what I have on the score though, Mr. Latry had done something wrong there.
Obviously mistake by linked note on selected stop as mentionned.
Браво
Finally someone whos putting some actual force onto the organ
In less than 50 years this storied cathedral which has witnessed more French history than 10 million Frenchmen combined will have been converted to a mosque and this organ will be silenced forever along with Bach's music and just about everything else that Europe gave the world.
goosebumps!!!!!!
What a finishing sound! 😲
Great performance but horrific audio compression.
Totally kills the accoustics and dynamics.
are you joking? This is probably the best recording of an organ I have heard, period.
@@ateslabattery115 the e power Biggs ones posted on UA-cam are better quality
@@cosmofoxgaming1268 Do you have any specific examples? links would be appreciated.

Oh, Just Transcendent
Professor Latry is an amazing musician!
After Notre Dame is reopened, I pray this is the first song played as people enter.
No. Franck’s “Piece Heroique”
How about the Tocatta from Widor’s Symphony #5?
How about Messiaen's "Apparition de l'Église Éternelle"? That would work perfectly as a prelude or "Introit".
SPEAK mighty organ!!! ❤ 😢
Wow romantic interpretation! Fantastic.
Incredible...
Gorgeus!
a little bit too much
Fugue begins at 9:00.
So sweat sound, and perfect performance.

Where's the rest of Cochereau's footage?
