The hornady situation involves the company SUPPOSEDLY putting out a memo advising the vaccines would be required and then retracting it.
Lol I was just about to post what's going on with Hornady. I assumed it was more nefarious than that.
Thank you.
Thanks. heard about it, but needed to be reminded.
Production lag is a real problem sometimes. Movies made that showed the twin towers were shelved or edited. And we all remember the Manchurian candidate being shelved after 63 for many years.
I was also just about to say that I have no idea what the controversy is. Thank you Paul!
Hope you're well. ^_^
And then threatening to hunt down and punish the dastardly individual that leaked the vax mandate to the pro-gun press. That was what annoyed me more than buckling down to Jao Bai-den's "mandate" (which I don't like, but I can kinda understand if you live and die by government contracts).
Only Paul Harrell, God bless him, would sincerely ask the internet to please put a little effort into actually knowing what you're talking about. Paul, you're awesome. The internet will never listen, but I like your optimism. Carry on, good sir.
This comment make me chuckle, then I felt a little sad.

Neither rain nor snow nor dark of night will stop Paul from delivering intelligent and worthwhile information. Thank you Paul for another great Sunday video.
Paul, in my opinion, the advantage of the extreme defense bullet design is exactly what you showed. Reliable real world performance such as shown on your meat target but most importantly, zero need to rely on expansion. A hollow points performance, albeit critical defense or whatever, is mostly reliant on it expanding as designed. If it doesn’t, you may have pass thru or damage inadequacies. Yes, you may have to adjust your sights for a different point of aim but the extreme defender bullet design eliminates the worry of wondering if it’s going to expand properly. It doesn’t need to
I would add the meat target does not simulate a closed body with fluid. The damage cavities inflicted on ballistic gel with the Underwood ammo is pretty impressive. Loved the video!
As someone who has used hollow point ammunition in self defense... I very much appreciated the fact all of my bullets stopped in my target and didn't pass through to the park time with children behind my home. Though my experience is it really doesn't matter if there is expansion or not just so long as it hits and doesn't keep going. This lady one the mother fucker somehow survived after getting shot in the chest twice, part of the second bullet even hot his heart and the first hit his bladder and intestines....
Never forget the idiot dumb enough to fuck with you when he knows you havea gun is almost certainly high as fuck on drugs... Bullets don't stop someone with an overdose of fentynl and methamphetamines in his system but it will make that mother fucker run the fuck away.
The HPs (Speer Gold Dot and FTX) will work with bodily fluids too though. You don't need flutes to push fluid. Really though, our bodies are not like water jugs or gelatin blocks. The amount and distribution of fluid in lung tissue, for example, is analogous to the amount and distribution of fluid in the tangerines, much more than it would be like a jug of water.
Regarldess, the Speer and the FTX both exhibited more damage in this test than both FTM loadings did, so with extra fluid in the equation, that would mean either the HPs would do still more damage than they did, or the FTM bullets would only do greater damage to the point they were ay the level of the Speer GD and Hornady FTX in Paul's test.
On the other hand, FTM style (fluted) bullets will not expand, period: a HP may have poor expansion on a particular shot, but it will never shrink smaller than the size of the FTM bullet, which is a solid, mono-metal projectile.
So I don't really see what the advantage to be had is using the FTM bullets, especially in something such as 44 SPL, where velocities are well under 1,500 fps. Even taking the marketing hype concerning the flutes and "hydraulic pressure" at face value, basic physics would tell us that velocities would need to be quite high to develop enough energy to dump out as hydraulic force, so as to have an effect comparable to a larger projectile.
I hope to meet Mr. Harrell someday and shake his hand and thank him for the work he and the crew do. I put my faith in his words because he backs up those words with fact, not here say. He's an experienced shooter and really good at teaching and passing knowledge on to others. Hey, even the deer show up to listen in when he does a video. That might be dangerous though. Makes the deer more cunning.....
Be careful, I'll bet he has one hell of a firm hand shake

The person on the receiving end is definitely screwed.
.44 Special always seemed to have a great reputation in standard loading from the early years on up to WWII. Skeeter Skelton had a soft spot for it post WWII. Sending a 246 grain bullet down range at 700-800 fps doesn’t sound that impressive, but it is still throwing a respectable sized chunk of lead. This was an informative video.
Similar to the standard .45 ACP.
Well most underestimate bullets and sending a longer bullet with the same weight is harder to do and other factors like smokeless powder but lots of rifle rounds are not even 246 grain
i adore this style of pockets!!! it is so clever!!!

Meat targets aside, how these monolithic Philips-nosed projectiles would perform on the cavity of a deer or a human, seem to be the same or better in gel test comparisons. In other words, when FLUIDS come into the equation (not tangerines) where substantial hydraulic dynamics could be part of the terminal effect, I think they'd work just fine. I think they'd work almost as well as an expanding projectile while penetrating just as well as a WFN non-expanding solid copper or hard cast load.
But hey, none of this stuff has emotional investment. We're just comparing terminal ballistics of various bullet types.
the oranges/tangerines are supposed to simulate lung tissue, which (hopefully? probably?) is not full of fluid before getting shot. Some air, some fluid, some soft tissue
@@utrak I know I know. It's difficult to simulate anything with total accuracy. It's a good device. I'm glad Paul uses this.
Yet as an effective tool to demonstrate the differences between an expanding and non-expanding projectile? I don't know honestly.
We aren't killing gel blocks to put gel in the freezer, or defending ourselves against gel blocks. But I know why the FBI uses the stuff for terminal ballistics development. It's CONSISTENT for the purpose of small changes in projectiles, metallurgy, velocity, etc. A meat target is anything but consistent, whether it's Paul's setup or an actual animal.
@@exothermal.sprocket Yeah that's fair. Still, it'd be a shame if he switched to gel, gotta have that meat target magic
Lots of people do gel tests. It would serve no purpose for me to do gel.
There's also the matter of the size and location of the groups.
Sadly, I won't be able to test the ammo while hunting because it's prohibited for hunting in my jurisdiction.
@@PaulHarrell Well understood. Short of actual animal dispatching for whatever purposes, we'll have to rely on decades of hunter experience, comparing decades of hunter stories, compare those points of information with late developments in metallurgy, powder, manufacturing, and platforms, and make the best informed decisions we can.
And the meat target is a useful tool that demonstrates things that gel, or plywood, or water jugs cannot.

I always thought Black Hills was drastically over-priced. Their performance is SOMETIMES a tiny bit better than much lower priced options, and often is no-better, no-worse. They seem to have "convinced" many people (some of whom were given the ammo for free in exchange for good reviews.)
They're in the same vein of "self-defense" ammo as many other specialty ammo makers. Usually drastically over-priced for about half the amount of ammo you'd normally get and they use a lot of buzz words and print a bunch of ballistics on their websites and boxes to try to convince you that it's worth the price. You're better off spending that money on some quality bullets and reloading supplies and just make your own if you're concerned about good ammo for self-defense. At least then you know for sure you've used quality components and don't have to spend a mint to just to shoot 25 or so at the range and can actually test how well they work.
@@upinarms79 It’s generally considered not the best idea to use reloads for a carry or dangerous game hunting gun when they are on the job. Reliability, as I’ve proven to myself a few times 😿 isn’t quite as good…
I love shooting 44 spl but it’s expensive and hard to find now. Night and day versus the 44 mag in terms of pleasantness. But to save my life and only one shot to do it, give me the magnum. Scare the hell out of the target even if you miss. Lol.
While it wouldn't be my choice for a self-defense weapon I fully agree there's something to be said about the intimidation factor of having a large revolver pointed at you.
44 is super easy to reload. You don't even need a press, Lee Has a hand loader or "smack loader" (what I call em).. all you need is a good mallet and the components. A work bench wouldn't hurt but any solid table will do.

Is there a revolver caliber that isn’t expensive?
@@dr.floridamanphd well the crowd cleared away and I began to pray as the water fell on the floor..
Years ago in the 90's I was doing a lot of outdoor things, and also handloading. I found the .44 Special very useful and easy to load for. I almost exclusively loaded a 240 grain cast semi-wadcutter bullet and just varied the powder charge. With 6 grains of Unique I had a very soft shooter for practice at about 800 fps, and I could shoot a rabbit or squirrel with very little meat damage. I also loaded the classic Skeeter Skelton load of 7.5 grains of the same powder that gave me about 1,000 fps. Since I was carrying a .44 Magnum revolver at the time, I simply loaded the hotter rounds seated out to the second grease groove, so that I had a quick visual reference to which was which. I shot several Virginia white tail deer with the 7.5 grain load, and they dropped like a stone. I always felt that I would be pretty well protected against two-legged varmints with this load as well.
But try as I might, I couldn't find any really good factory ammo until I came across a CCI Blazer load with a 200 grain jacketed hollow point. It worked well out of my 4-inch Model 29 so I kept a box on hand. But mostly I liked the .44 Special as an outdoors round with my hand loads because the Model 29 was just too big for daily carry. I did fool around a bit with a Rossi 5-shot stainless revolver with a 3-inch barrel with the CCI Blazer load that worked okay, but not really better than one of my K frame S&W's with .38 or .357 loads that carried an extra shot, so I soon lost interest in this setup in .44 Special as a defense gun.
man i appreciate your videos friend. keep going paul
Would you do a “bit” on .41mag? I like the cartridge , but it sremd to hsve become obdolete
Not obsolete by any means but often difficult to find.
All together the crew has over one hundred handguns. None of them are a .41 magnum.
My friend/coach/mentor has a Ruger New Model Blackhawk in
.41 Remington Magnum. It's a hand cannon like his Ruger .44 Remington Magnum. About 10 rounds with either is about all I care for. He told me the .41 mag is primarily a hunting gun. We found ammo in a couple small gun stores in the NC mountains. At the time it was expensive but not like today's prices.
I’d be extremely skeptical of the penetration capability of a bullet with the mass of a 9mm and the frontal area of a .44… Sectional density is crap on that
Yes. Unless it's moving fast. But this is going 9mm speeds...
Maybe good for overpenetration concerns?
@@GunFunZS Sectional density doesn’t change with speed, it’s just projectile mass per unit area of cross sectional area. Low sectional density is alway bad for penetration- You’d have to push a 125 gr bullet pretty dang fast at that diameter to get good reliable penetration. Maybe it works ok with those copper solids, but I’d need some calibrated gel tests to prove it. 😆
@@jpoeng no one asserted that sectional density does change with speed. But performance does. I think your error is conflating sectional density to terminal effect. This style of bullet tends to work well when it's moving quite fast. Going slow It does basically the same as an FMJ.
@@GunFunZS Ok, yeah, I don’t disagree. But I’m saying that with the energy available to it in this caliber, I just don’t see the concept working well here. The fluidic bullets really want to be zipping along. I like them in 9mm size bullets, and I picked up a 6” 9x25mm barrel for my G20, but it seems to me that the Lehigh type design is “a solution in search of a problem” at these larger calibers. YMMV.
Awesome way to round out my weekend !!! Thank you :)
