Everything about it is perfect, from fade in to fade out, the guitar, the alto sax, the ;pop; drumming, the cymbal bell, Sting's voice and range, the keyboards, all unsurpassable. Even the fact that you want it to go on, but no,-- there's no self indulgence, it fades out beautifully.

Love, love, love how Hiram Bullock's guitar solo ends and Branford Marsalis's soprano sax solo begins. Mark Egan plays a perfectly-placed run down the bass right at that spot and Kenwood Dennard hits a wide open FLAM (pop) on the snare drum, as if to put an exclamation mark at the end of Bullock's solo. Simply Superb!

That voice, those drums, that bass, that guitar solo, and then how the sax merges back in at 2:34 is freaking music magic. And hat's off to the keys and other "hidden" instruments and the sound guys who recorded this gem with such crisp perfection. Seeing Sting 2021 concert tour in a few weeks. Can't wait.

There is a part in the song "The Gunner's Dream," where the vocals meld into a saxophone solo. It's so beautiful. You'll find it at the 2:00 point in the song.
Many years ago, my now deceased best friend, Matt, pointed it out to me and every time I hear it I think of him.

Having worked as a roadie for nearly thirty yesrs I had the priviledge to be on tour with the great Hiram Bullock twice. The first one shortly after the release of "nothing like the sun", with a band called "Bush Rock" also featuring Delmar Brown. Te second tour, in 1995, was a U.S.O. set that took us to several USAF bases around Europe. with the great late Steve Logan on bass. I forget the name of the drummer, but the three of them were really incredible. Hiram played "the human juke-box", revising ANY song upon request, and the show would go on forever until someone chucked us out of the place.
I keep fond memories of those days and the rough travelling with military transports and all the backstage and dressing room jokes we shared, and it's so sad both Hiram and Steve have left this world.

The solo section, and the blend between them, is the most beautiful moment of this song. Hats off to the drummer, Kenwood Dennard, for beautifully complementing both solos. The way the kick and accented cymbals build at the climax of the first solo and then soften for the second really helps that blend which could have seemed so disjointed with 2 such different solos. Beautiful music.

Well she's walking through the clouds
    With a circus mind

... Angel came down from heaven yesterday
She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me
And she told me a story yesterday,
About the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea
And then she spread her wings high over me
She said she's gonna come back tomorrow
And I said "fly on my sweet angel,
      Fly on through the sky,
      Fly on my sweet angel,
Tomorrow I'm gonna be by your side"
Sure enough this morning came on to me
Silver wings silhouetted against the child's sunrise
And my angel she said on to
"Today is the day for you to rise,
Take my hand, you're gonna be my man,
      You're gonna rise"
And then she took me high over yonder
And I said "fly on my sweet angel,
      Fly on through the sky,
      Fly on my sweet angel,
Forever I will be by your side... for Love

I always liked this version as the best. I devoted it to my daughter, cause her mother delivered her the first night we met on a ground of snow in a place nothing more than how simple conditions can be or how long the extension can remain as love is in our hearts and forever.

My 18 yrs... if it wouldnt be an intro solo of Jimi, virtually original can only seem to be a shadow of this brilliant cover. Intro is a masterpiece itself. Jimi, Gil, Sting, Hiram, Branford and all guys thanks God bless you.

It was probably like 1987 and I used to play this cassettes over and over and over again. The whole album was good but this song affected me completely. I still cry. It's so beautiful....Stings delivery the vibe of the band, the guitar and saxophone solos, why does it make me weep?

This song has been covered by all time great... Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Sting. Each has done a wonderful job putting their own personal touches on an amazing song. These are great embellishments to one of Hendrix's simple, emotional masterpieces.

Jimi Hendrix' Mother inspired this song . Its deeply personal & untouchable .
Yet this cover is a gift to the world ! Stings quote " songs are not written in stone - they are living breathing entities .. " Alchemical process indeed

.. real magic here .. no matter how many times I listen it always takes me .. hmm "walking through the clouds" .. LOL !!! .. and what an encourager of talent Sting is .. bringing out the best in so many .. there are many wondrous versions of this song .. this one has its own special place .. and just like there's 'nothing like the sun' there's nothing quite like what happened in the studio on this particular day .. Jimi would be so proud ...

The descending line @2:32 is very Gilmourish, so well spotted! The chorus/pitch effect adds a bit extra to that Gilmour sound also. Apart from that, this solo is totally unique in my opinion with no generic playing. A masterpiece by Hiram Bullock.

From 2:49 to 2:52 Brandford is God. I can barely believe that he improvised that: Dsus4/Gm11b13/Dmaj7 13, on Bm7/Bbm7/Am7. Played in triplets. But I believe that. :)
