World War II Suicide Speed Boat Sailor Memorial

Between temples 27 and 28, near the Sumiyoshi inn, lies a very interesting memorial to a group of 160 Special Attack Units suicide speed boat sailors who all died in an explosion at their base on August 16, 1945, the day after Japan surrendered. It is unclear if the explosion was an accident or intentional. Though the airplane Special Attack Units, the Kamikaze, are the most famous suicide squads, there were also boat and sub suicide squads.
