I like how this guy acknowledged he is inspired by primitive technology and doing his own thing by taking a shot at living a primitive lifestyle if his channel description is genuine
As he was carving that log with his knife, I was thinking: "This is cast iron. It'll break if he keeps using it like that. Didn't he have a chisel? (A cast iron chisel, but a chisel nonetheless)". Right after that, the knife broke... It was a bad use for the knife, but I get that he needed to do some precision cuts on that wheel and it would take a long time to get that done with a stone chisel. Oh well...
I'll need to look into turning cast iron into steel. I've watched some vids on refining it, then making swords like the Vikings (backyard blacksmiths), but there must be some extra additives along the way that I wasn't paying attention to. At least then he could have hardened it, then tempered. Broke my heart a little to see it snap, but seemed destined to happen with cast iron under load.
@@theoneandonlyowl3764 nah, it's not just the additives (and lack of impurities) in the alloy that makes a good blade. There's a reason forging is a thing, because steel as opposed to bronze can't be cast to produce a blade. It's all about the dendrites baby, you gotta work them crystals nice and slow. The smaller and denser they get, the better the blade you'll get.
@@StanislavG. True. I wish I had more time on this earth. Blacksmithing was sometime I witnessed quite a bit of and loved as a kid. My body won't allow me to learn any new trades. (Sorry for the late reply. The whim to take a look back through the comment replies only hit me tonight)
For your next bit of iron work I suggest you make a broad head chisel. It is a simple tool, since its basically just a metal bar with a sharp end, but the right one for removing wood to shape things quickly.
I think you are amazing! Your skills are magical! I'm so very sad the videos ended 7 months ago? What are you doing now? are you still living primitively? I can only imagine you must be thriving on your little farm! I hope someday you will make a nother video so we can see how you are doing! Thank you for your videos!
It's wrong. 0 skills. Lies. They are helped by a team but of course he does not film and moreover at the end of the shooting he does not pick up their waste and does not destroy their structure, he leaves them to rot in the forest
Maestro! Very creative way of making the spool/wheel. I'm so saddened with the broken knife, but you still managed to finish the project. Respect, sir. I hope you will find time to make a new one. It is a very useful tool and has served you good. Maybe a chisel too, if you manage to find/produce enough iron? Best wishes to you for the new year! Regards from snowy Norway.
WATERWHEEL!!! to power your bellows monjolo a hammermill grindstones and so many more things you will need to do by hand ..you might make a spring pole lathe as well turning is so much quicker than a baton and knife ..with thees improvements its simple to improve your tools , with better tools comes easier work .thanks for the videos looking forward to many more oh ya power a bellows for the kiln as well so ceramics and metal production is less time consuming. a hammer mill for the clay makes better brick and crushes ore nicely .you could even use it to power fans in the house. all you need is to understand how to transform rotational force into linear motion most common would be steam train piston back and forth piston rod connected to a wheel off its center {distance from center determines stroke of rod} piston moves wheel rotates same backwards water flows turns wheel wheel shaft turns...rod or belt or gears ... in its simplest something turning can make something go back and forth and vice versa ..with the water flow you have and the "head" that's a lot of power ..if your staying there long term develop the waterway and build a wheel its a nobrainer free power to do work to save you time. as always thanks for the videos
A monjolo is usually water powered, no need for waterwheel. Primitive technology channel made one: ua-cam.com/video/i9TdoO2OVaA/v-deo.html A monjolo is automatic, but too slow, so I figure he deliberately made a foot powered one since he doesn't need to grind that much cassava. For ocasional use, a foot powered monjolo is fast and practical.
At the beginning of this story I was thinking how that blade has really been a piece of technology that changed what he can do... Short lived. It was good while it lasted. Can go back and re use the steel though right? Nice vid ,was hoping for a fish dinner. Maybe in 2021!
This is what proper heat treatment is. That knife was broken from the stress points. I knew this would happen when he put the handle on the knife without heat treatment and normalization.
I wasn't too surprised when that knife split in two. I've seen modern fancy steel knives break under less stressful conditions. A primitive tiny knife wouldn't stand a chance being used like a chisel. The hatchet and chisel were invented for this stuff

Again Perfect. Again Perfect and agaiin.... Perfect (!) Btw... Perfect knife broken. Damn... LoL. I remember that knife was like a razor and very durable when you made it. But I'm sure you could make another knife more more better then that.
bet he did,,, bet he learnt somthing too and will learn about tempering metals and heattreating...he is not an expert but will probably be in time and shows he can do much with less than most do i wish him success
@@mobiousenigma With the amount of abuse that knife took I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, tools don't last forever, his was pretty well made to last as long as it did with the work it was put through.
@@ImJBTPG I Dont call hitting steel with wood abuse... nor do i think it was used outside its purpose or design ...it is a poor quality metal with no refining or add mixtures. it was a functional tool not pretty but useful. with the waterwheel he can produce more metal and probably of better quality
@@mobiousenigma batononing a knife is abuse, they’re not chisels they’re knives. They’re not designed to handle that well, any knife expert would tell you that. Full tang makes it better but still. But yes he can definitely make more
That sucks that your knife broke, I saw the video in which you forged it and a chisel. I thought the knife blade was a little on the thin side... oh well well, hope you do some more iron smelting and make a better thicker blade and perhaps some more tools.😁
If I had a way Id send you a stone fish hook! They are fun to make. I used deer antler for for the guides on my rod. I think you have a better idea only using one at the tip. I find it cast way better through only one loop. My cordage is not as pretty as yours though. Probably helps to have smooth line too :)
Entertaining video! Bad luck with that knife but it held up for a year so I consider it success. Time to make a new one and make it better the before because you have come a long way since you first tried forging! Looking forward to your next video and good luck!

For real, though - I was so sad for you when your knife broke. Sorry to see that happen.
