Stripe is definitely wealthier than Bandit's family. Stripe's family has the new SUV, the expensive toys for Muffin, the pool, etc. The show makes it a point to show the dynamics of family members that have different levels of wealth while getting along and avoiding jealousy.

One thing I love about this episode is that it show’s Rusty and Jack’s relationship in a pretty cool detail. For the most part, Jack is largely considered Rusty’s friend, even TV Tropes emphasizes that Jack is Rusty’s best friend highly. However, Jack’s family is clearly inviting Rusty over to their house and treating Rusty well while Jack is happy to have Rusty over… It shows that Jack isn’t just Rusty’s best friend… But *Rusty is Jack’s best friend.*

The hot watertank in the scene where Rusty is practising his accuracy is a throwback to arguably the best batsman in cricket history, Don Bradman, who famously increased his skills by repeatedly using a round stump to hit a golfball against his round hotwater tank.

In the case of Don Bradman, it was actually a large cold-water tank made from corrugated steel, formed to make a cylindrical shaped tank. This ensured the golf ball would come off the tank at random angles which made it even harder to re hit the ball. The Don was the G.O.A.T.

I might be reading too much into it but if you look at The Don's childhood home in Bowral, you'll see that it had a red and white striped pattern on the bullnose over the verandah. It looks awfully similar to the red and white striped awnings on Rusty's house. If that's deliberate, those guys at Ludo really do go the extra mile.

After watching the series I’m positive at least one of the Bluey team is a military child. They make so many accurate references, like grandpa saying “I learned it in the jungle” (meaning the Vietnam War) and the terminology used means they are pretty familiar with the army and what it’s like to be a military kid.
    EDIT:
Forgot about this until you mentioned it, but Digger, the older brothers name, is also slang for an Australian soldier. Because they have to dig in, or dig a trench.

one thing to bear in mind - several “two story” houses shown in bluey arent actually two story - they are what is known as “queenslanders”. A lot of Queensland, where bluey is set, is built on flood plains- so they built a lot of the houses on stilts and boarded off the gaps underneath to keep snakes out. These are old style houses and, while they can be done up to look nice, are often not as nice as newer houses. This may not be obvious to people who havent lived in queensland.

Thank you. I'm from an area where you're more likely to see a house built into a the ground because flooding is rare, but freezing is annual.
So I see those houses and expect not only 2 floors, but basements under that.
I'm kind of glad to be wrong. The show feels more real knowing that detail.

The colour of Rustys dads berette means that he's probably infantry, or a an infantry support unit (some units have support people use their colours with you corp badge and some have you use your corp colours). Australia has 2 green berette colours, one for commandos and one for infantry companies. Brisbane doesn't house commandos. As far as I'm aware none of the aviation units are attached to infinity. Living so close to the base Rusty probably sees low flying helicopters semi frequently during events like Riverfire, the army sends a helicopter display, but the air force steals the show with jet and globe-masters flying down the Brisbane river.

    • @hoilst265
      @hoilst265 5 місяців тому +2

@@Pugly Seven months on, I hope you read this. Since this show is set in Brissie, Rusty's dad would be based out of Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera. It's not quite as close to the centre of the city as Paddo where Bluey lives, but it's not that far out. When Enoggera (if you're referring to it in a military context, most people will know you're referring to the base) was built it was probably on the outskirts, but as the city grew it got swallowed. His dad wears the rifle green beret of 6 RAR based out of there, so it makes sense.
Enoggera's not an entirely low-rent suburb, but nor is it as expensive as Paddo. However, I don't think Rusty and Jack live in Enoggera; I think, judging from the architecture and the size of their backyards, they're a bit further out, but still close to the Base - a ten, twenty minute commute. Keppera, Ferny Grove, Stafford, Everton Park, Mitchelton, or even Stafford.
Rusty's house, with the diamond-post-and-beam-and-chainlink fences, and the bungalow weatherboard put me right in the mind of Stafford or Mitchelton, just instantly. I lived in Mitchelton back in the day. (I also lived in Paddington, and I'm 80% sure I dated a girl who lived in the house that Bluey's is based off). Those chain link fences were...just the thing back when a lot of those houses were built in the 60s, with the beams run on the diagonal (and the tops cut on the angle). They're the front fence, and the high timber fences between the neighbours is pretty standard. At least it stops some cricket balls...occasionally.
Every little detail - even a cartoon that's quite a bit more minimalist than a lot of others - is bang on. Everything is pure, perfect Brisbane, and this bits you point outed - perfect. The old Rheem hot water heater (what you called a tank) that's outside and going a bit rusty at the bottom. The peeling paint. The window-mount AC (none of these homes were built with AC...oh, boy. No.) Bang on. It's not poverty or neglect...it's just part of being in an old house in Queensland. The humidity ages 'em fast. Others things like the round mould covering the Gyprock (what you'd call drywall) sheeting, instead of it being filled and taped inside the house.
It, like a lot of things in this show, is simply *achingly* Brissie. It's beautiful.
Places like Paddington (I should stop calling it Paddo), were built pretty much when Brissie was founded, so you get the old Queenslander houses like Bluey lives in - elevated on stilts, with interior, vertical wood lining (and, by now, a bunch of windows you can't open or close). Places like Stafford and Mitchelton were built up in the sixties, when you see the change of styles - bungalows, with large yards (cars had been invented!) - and use of materials, like the aforementioned Gyprock, and weatherboard. You'd see the odd older house, from back when it was first settled but farmland, before all the paddocks with subdivided off for places like Rusty's house.
It makes sense for a large, cricket-mad family, and with a dad who's the sole provider. Even if he is getting deployment pay. Mitchelton or Ferny Grove or Everton Park is a little less expensive, but still close, and you get big yards, something you'd be darn lucky to have in Paddo - and if you did, it wouldn't be flat.
And yeah. Facing a proper six-stitcher for the first time is terrifying.
Oh, and yeah: a Kelpie wanting to play with a ball for 36-hours straight is absolutely accurate.

"Army" was Jack's story, "Space" was Mackenzie's story. Those two had really made me wish for an episode where Rusty would get the spotlight. Not only the two episodes were brilliant, but Rusty was excelent in both of them. "Cricket" was everything I was wishing for and more.
On a bit of an unrelated topic, I've watched your character/episode analysis videos on Bandit, Chilli, Jack (i.e. "Army") and Mackenzie (i.e. "Space") and they were also great. Another character that I think really deserves her analysis video is the best teacher in media a.k.a. Calypso. There is really something special in the empathy she shows to kids and the way she always lets them express themselves. I wouldn't call her a better character than Bandit and Chilli, but she is more uniquely great than both of them. I mean, in animation, movies and even sitcoms you do get a lot of good parents, there are just outnumbered and overshadowed by characters like Homer Simpson. Good teachers however, (as far as I'm familiar with) you only get a good amount of if you expand the definition to all the non-parent mentors (which would allow you to count characters like Oogway and Iroh).

I love how some of the best bluey episodes have many layers of meaningful narrative. Flatpack has like 5 different threads going on. In Cricket, at first we think this episode is about Rusty in the park having 3 or 4 flashbacks about how to play cricket in the past. In reality, this is about adult Rusty, at the height of his career, remembering about his younger days when he learned that cricket is much more than just the sport. So very Christopher Nolan.

His narration only makes sense if he's talking to people who know of Rusty but dont know Rusty well. In the context of the episode the most like answer to when he is doing that is at the Gabba in the first Test of the Summer waiting for the kid he's watched grow into a man walk out in a test match (possibly for the first time) and telling people why he knows Rusty will succeed.

I think Digger and Rusty are a modern version of Wally and Beaver from 'Leave it to Beaver'. The caring older brother who sticks up for the younger one, the similar age gap, and the classic bunkbed with the younger on top. In that show, Wally stuggles with having to include his brother, while also enjoying his company.

  • @alphaomega7191
    @alphaomega7191 Рік тому +19

My Way Too Long take on what Cricket means. (For anyone who cares)
Up until this episode what we have seen of Rusty is someone who is a natural leader of his friend group largely because he's able to figure things out not only for himself but others. He figures out very quickly what works for Jack to make him comfortable in their game in Army and also helps figure out MacKenzie's difficulties in Space and saves him from the horror of the Girly Space Aliens on the other side of the Balck Hole. He seems older than his years. In Cricket we start to see why clearly. Most of the other kids have their parents to learn from but Rusty has a brother nearly twice his age who interacts with him regularly and allows him to tag along with him. Rusty is challenging himself against someone bigger stronger and faster and who unlike the parents doesn't necessarily let him win. Rusty also loves Cricket and constantly tests himself and strives to get better at it.
His older brother and his friends play competitively and there are more than enough of them that they dont need to let Rusty play but they are happy enough to let Rusty play because he's athletic enough to field okay. When it comes to batting though Rusty finally meets something he cant figure out. Digger makes sure his protective gear is secure and warns him they are going to treat him no differently to how they treat anybody else. Tiny bowls fast at everyone and Rusty is no different. They aren't being cruel they are simply playing the game and they are happy for him to play but they aren't going to make it easy just because he's younger and smaller. Rusty cant figure out how to deal with Tiny's pace - and for perhaps the first time that he can remember he's unsure what to do but that doesn't stop him trying. When Rusty gets hit Digger looks back as they walk but a he doesn't baby him. When Digger speaks under the bunk beds he again doesn't baby him but suggests maybe he should wait till he's a bit older to test himself against older kids. The fact that Rusty chooses to keep testing himself by batting is allowed by the older kids. He's challenging himself and they respect that and they treat him the same as they treat each other but he's not quite one of them.
We then get the first thing that isn't 100% certain in the episode but that we can have a good guess at. Who tells Rusty Dad about Tiny. There are only two choices Rusty's Mum or Digger and the info in the letter with the detail of how fast Tiny is tends to indicate it's probably Digger. Which means he knows his brother is stuck because he himself struggles to cope with Tiny's pace sometimes. His Dad then finds the right words in the letter telling Rusty not only the right sort of shot to play but also telling him there will be tougher challenges in life that a Cricket Ball hitting him. In that moment it clicks for Rusty - it's not that he cant cope with Tiny's pace it's that he's a little too afraid to let him do what needs to be done to do it. When he finally does step up and succeed the older kids are happy for him and in many ways it's the final step for him becoming truly one of them.
Then there is the final ball of the park match - and so many people get it slightly wrong - Rusty doesn't hit Dusty a catch - he hits a potential catch and that is a very different thing. If you watch it again he's been showing her how she needs to position her hands to catch it but when he hits her the ball he doesn't make it easy - she needs to run for it and get her hands in the right position. He spoons it in her direction so she CAN catch it but she still has to work. He gave her the opportunity in the same way Digger and his friends do and he consciously hits it towards her giving her the chance to succeed but he doesn't totally baby her - he makes it just hard enough that succeeding means something. When she catches it she's overjoyed but so is Rusty.
Ultimately there are a lot of messages going on here but the need to work to achieve things and that things wont always be handed to you is woven through the thread of the narrative. People give both Rusty and Dusty chances to achieve challenging things rather than just gift it too them. Then we get the ultimate payoff showing that by constantly challenging himself Rusty's ultimate destiny is elite success. This episode is a bit like Bike where Bandit stops Bluey helping Bingo, Muffin or Bentley because he wants them to try to figure these challenges out for themselves. Sometimes you learn through failure - sometimes you have to persevere and face obstacles but ultimately if you do that then success is that much sweeter.
So thats my take on Cricket.
Oh bonus thought - do people realise that Rusty isn't the only character in Cricket whose future we are given a glimpse of? The other is hidden in plain sight well actually plain audio. Bandit's narration only makes sense in one context - that it's in the future. He cant remember whose birthday it was indicating it's some time ago and he's not talking to Bluey or Bingo because they are there and know how good Rusty is at the game.

This episode honestly felt like it was made for me! As a military kid Bluey itself has been like healing my inner child with its themes like Curry quest and Army. But this episode just TAKES THE CAKE! And the fact it’s been released not only on that international day- but just before the ASHES TOO (between England and Australia) actually is perfect! And as someone who has recently got into cricket and has been finding connection with my military dad through it it’s come at a perfect time for me. The way it connects him with his family, friends and past is so beautiful. But the themes of family in general. The letter actually BROKE me! And then we have the end with his sister- as an older sister Omg the “look after your sister for me” was ALL TOO REAL, as well as the words of wisdom in letters. But also it’s making the best of that situation and it shows to keep going while your family member is deployed which oh boy! Really got me and has echoes of Curry quest! The way that Rusty always makes it seem like an adventure adventure keep going forward, I also feel like cricket keeps him distracted, his adventures keep him distracted, and that gives him strength and control and also just everything he needs, it also servers as an outlet. Military kid rep is one of the things that is missing from a lot of shows- and I never saw when I was younger, but like OMG the fact that it’s represented here in this way makes it so so beautiful and is so great that kids get to grow up seeing this.
Also as a cricket nerd the whole themes of the spirit of cricket- and the idea of it being about good faith and team work. Like ahhh incredible all around.
(Also someone could correct me but like it seemed like when he’s playing with his brothers friends and gets hit it’s a nod to bodylining? Idk I thought that was just a cool detail especially with it’s history. And themes and nods to the history of Australian cricket itself with the body line series in 1932 that they overcome)

They make my inner child feel seen in those difficult experiences and I tear up almost every time I watch them. I feel like military veterans and spouses get some attention in media but the kids are so often left out and forgotten about, so the fact that Bluey addresses them in multiple episodes is just so so great and incredibly needed

And expanding on your thoughts on the mums and dads episode, with Digger being already older and his dad being not around all the time, their mum probably let Digger look after Dusty and Rusty quite a bit too, with one or another task also being left to Rusty regarding looking after Dusty. Though Rusty still being quite young at that time too, he probably experienced more in that regard than Bluey for example, with her parents probably being around as much as they are at the current time in the show or even more, when Bingo was still younger.

i cannot speak for Australians, but American military folks typically don't get rich serving their countries. families of low ranked service people can qualify for food stamps in fact. they are relocated every couple of years, alternating from stateside to over seas. many of those who live off base rent their apartments, townhouses or houses since they will be pulling up proverbial stakes after just a brief stay. some assignments are unaccompanied, so the non-military parent, often the wife/mother, and the kids are left behind, with mom to care for kids and manage everything, including the home for months to years, and yes older kids can become parentified.

I was just going to say that. Rusty and his family are more then likely poor as rusty's mom does not work. (This is based off how Rusty states that mom's don't work and instead watch the kids) I also think this because it would be ridiculous for the Bluey team to put the amount of thought that they do in every episode and then shy away from showing someone of a lower class standing compared to the other characters.

I don't play cricket. But I just felt a nostalgia bomb when there is a close up of the "Proper Cricket Ball". The thing is you can tell the kids are playing with an old worn out ball. That just took me back when we played soccer with an old "proper regulation size soccer ball". Small balls or rubber balls are for kids. But when we played with that faded worn out ball, we brought our A game. And while today I can buy an official FIFA regulated Nike or Adidas ball, the fun and times I had with my old no name brand ball will be unmatched.

I was kind of appalled by a couple comments I saw on Reddit regarding Rusty. One suggested that he and Jack were two unnecessary male characters shoehorned into an episode that was clearly just military propaganda to show kids how great the army is. Another said the episode Army somehow "did Rusty dirty," and that his character was only redeemed with the Cricket episode. I honestly couldn't tell if these were trolls looking to start a comment fight (I saw no responses to either, so if that were the case, it didn't work), but I thought "silly" was far too gentle a description for those viewpoints. Rusty is a fantastic character, and his whole family is a beautiful asset to the show. People are weird.

    • @ikrIkarus

Though I have to say I get where they are coming from, as the Army episode kind of felt iffy to me in a "Your kid can't behave? Send them to the army and they can fix them" kind of way. Like that is something some people actually believe. And in the episode all of Jack's problems are seemingly suddenly gone when it comes to him "being in the army". Also playing into that idea that ADHD isn't a real thing, and all those people need is some discipline. Also considering how militaries around the world usually go about these things, wich is less than gentle, to put it mildly. I doubt that this would be the right kind of therapy. (Not to mention all the other stuff that is connected with being in the army, and how that can seriously break a person)
Like of course it is all play pretend, based on a heavily romanticized view on the military and such, that a kid would probably have, which isn't much of a problem in itself. And the thing described by Jack "that the others depend on him", might even actually help with ADHD (I'm really not that well versed with that), but still there is this nagging feeling.

    • @cromulentwords
      @cromulentwords Рік тому +18

@@ikrIkarus from what I heard, the Army episode was inspired by a study done where kids with ADHD (I believe) were split into two groups and given a set of tasks. One group was just told to complete the tasks, and the other group was told that they were "playing army" and that the tasks were part of the game. The group that was having fun with the tasks did much better with them and were able to remember details more easily. The episode really doesn't seem to be pushing literal military service. Even before I heard about the inspiration for the episode, I didn't take any issue with it personally.

Something that happens to all kinds of media. Like for example in the study or episode it works, because the kids are having fun, though you can also get the idea it is because of the army framework, and all you need to get kids with ADHD to focus is to shout instructions at them like a drill instructor. As well as the "nice house" and the drafting table, I thought maybe Frank's name was a nod to not only his voice actor (whose name is Francis), but also Frank Lloyd Wright, especially taking into account the style in which he designed his house (assuming he is, indeed, the architect).
Maybe not... Frank Lloyd Wright was American and Bluey is pretty in-your-face with Australian culture, but his house really does have a lot of FLW characteristics to it. Anyway, I do think "Frank is an architect" is one of the better-supported fan theories.

    Good episode mate.
And thinking on Rusty’s Dads AO in the army, I think it’s likely he could be apart of the Australian Airborn - very similar uniforms from what I can see.
Also modern airborn units are quite well known these days to operate from helicopters as well as para jumps.
It would also explain why Rusty known quite a bit of ground navigation and infantry basics - which while learned by Army Aviation Units too, are less likely to be something talked about.
So likely he’s an infantryman - position and rank… that’s a lot harder to guess. Your likely need to see his equipment and how he operates (I.e. basic rifleman, grenadier, auto-rifleman, machine gunner, support gunner, etc) and since we can’t see any chevrons or tabs, it’s likely he’d at minimum a private, tho this could be a overlooked detail and we could find out that he has stripes or even a commission, tho seeing how he spends his small bit of free time, he’s likely a ranker vs an officer.
    Edit:
Also seeing how Jack reacts to the army stuff… it’s a quite interesting to think in how we see Rusty’s future as a professional Cricketer, there a good chance that Jack’s future could actually be serving his country in the military - and potentially alongside Rusty’s brother Digger (slang for Australian Infantry).

Not sure how or why I found this video, having never seen Bluey in my life, even as an Aussie.... perhaps my love of cricket made the algorithm throw it my way.......but I will just jump in here with what is the best detail in the entire episode, from what I gathered from this, and your first video.
Rusty training in his yard against the wall and stump with a can to his right.
This detail is incredible and shows the writers depth of research... or possibly deep love of the game of Cricket
That whole scene, is gold. In Australia, especially, though true in much of the Cricketing world... the very very best players, get their feet wet, in back yard cricket, even before they play with a club as a junior. So much so, when Cricket Australia puts out material exploring the pathway to wearing the baggy green as it is known... playing for Australia at Test level... it starts at the backyard level. This is not JUST for Australia though... the window scene, with Rusty's Mum and him practicing to hit away across the other side so as to not hit it through the window, seems to be evoking, I believe, Sir Viv Richards, of the West Inides, who many would make the case to be the greatest living batsman of the sport (yes even over Tendulkar, you cricket lovers reading). As a boy, in his back yard, he had to learn to place the ball via other shots, and learn to hit the opposite way on what would be a natural pull shot... because the neighbour on that side, would not ever throw the ball back if anyone hit it over the fence. So, he would practice being able to play shots which might not be the go to shots, including the pull shot, or in this case not playing it and choosing an alternative instead....in his yard every day, so that he could ensure his shots avoided the curmudgeonly neighbour who kept the ball.
BUT, even more impressive is the use of stump, and the presence of the water tank, in his training scene. This homage to the greatest batsman ever in the sport, a man called Don Bradman. A freakishly skilled batsman, who AVVERAGED almost a century, 99.94, in his Test career. Bradman is so good, if you apply the popular Z-Score method of ranking sporting stars, Bradman is the greatest athlete of all time.... to have Z score above 4 puts you in the top of the bell of sporting figures... to have Z Score above 5 is to be in the top percentile, and true legendary athlete... no one has a Z Score above 5.08 though.... except Don Bradman. His Z-Score is 6.48, leagues ahead of any other sportsmen in history.
How did Bradman get so good? Well from the age of about 12, he would take a ball.. a small ball.. a GOLF ball, not a Cricket ball... and hit it against the wall like Rusty... well not quite... he hit against his water tank (a curved surface)... and hit it.. not with a Cricket bat..... but a STUMP.... which is about the diameter of a broom handle. He did this for hours a day, for years, until he could string together and slew of successful shots, returning the ball, even when it behaved as unpredictably as it would coming off a curved.. and rough brick (the tank sat on a brick base) surface, even when the ball was so tiny, and he had such a narrow surface area to hit it with. Hence the presence of the Water tank and stump, in Rusty's training scene.
That scene alone, was just so perfect, and instantly told me, as I watched this video, just how dedicated to authenticity the writers were seeking to be with this episode.

I like to think that the ending with Rusty coming out to bat is actually the present tense in terms of Bandit telling the story.
Perhaps the Heeler family are sitting around in the future watching Rusty's test debut. While they are excitedly waiting for Rusty to come out and bat, Bandit takes the opportunity to recount this special moment and how he grew into the great player he now is.

I’ve honestly never even considered this episode to be one of the top tier episodes of bluey as immediately as Sleepytime and Dragon. I still loved it as a story of perseverance and as a spotlight episode, but now I got a larger amount of respect for it. As an exploration of his family, the dynamic, and just that ending which I didn’t understand until now…yeah, I’d say this episode is another 6/5.
Also, I noticed the instrumental for “Drama” by AJR in one part of the video.

I don't know much about cricket but when I played hockey I played a lot with adults when I was a brand new hockey player as a teen. I learned so much more when the adults didn't take it easy on me and I improved a lot faster just so i could keep up. Kinda like Rusty playing with Dusty and his mates

My favourite part in the episode "Cricket" was the father and son relationship. This kind of relationship was always (but not always) shown in animated movies in order to show the struggles od the bond between the father and the son. Rusty's dad's letter encouraging Rusty and being there for him in the earlier days currently explains why Rusty knows how to be prepared for anything as well as be a kind hearted peer to anyone.
By the way, I have watched Migration (a movie by Illumination) a few weeks back which also shows a father and son bonding somewhere in the movie. So, please watch this movie if you have the chance.

I have 3 very young, neurodivergent kids. Bluey really helps them accept and process their own and each other's stuff because there is always a character they can link it back to. It's beautiful. When they struggle with a thing a sibling is doing they are readily able to reflect how people handle the character they link it to; It's honestly been wonderful and invaluable gift to our lives. The relationship between Jack and Rusty is a huge one for us (As well as muffin!); As neurodivergent and young children often have a really hard time focusing and following rules/instructions and they can see great examples of how it's actually totally fine and that it can be worked with with compassion. ❤

It’s interesting and awesome that Digger does give Rusty a choice. I have known plenty of people (particularly in my own family) that don’t ever do that. Instead, if they know the child they are talking to will complain if they get hurt or have difficulty, they won’t let the child play. They don’t give them a choice. Good on Digger and Rusty.😁

Thank you so much for doing these in-depth reviews. You're probably not monitoring these comments so long after the event. But you've hit on something about Rusty's family background. You're right to suggest that Rusty's family is not middle-to-upper middle class based on the home. The single-level 'bungalow' style with the hip-height chain link fence is typical of a form of social housing that more or less ended in the 1980s called Housing Commission homes which were funded by the government. In the mid 1980s, many of these 1960s style homes were sold off for private ownership. My mum raised my sister and myself in one of these styles of homes in the 1980s. Full hat's off to the Brissie animators for depicting the wide range of home styles you see in Queensland. I live in the tourist city 40 miles/70km south of Brisbane called the Gold Coast. We describe going to Brisbane as 'going up the road'.

I wish there was something more apparent to let the audience know it was adult Rusty at the end. The first time I watched it I assumed it was his father, and the scene was a visual metaphor showing Rusty handing the responsibility of taking care of his little sister back to his father once he returns.

As an Argentinian, i have something pretty common in our lifestyles, that i call "argentinian opinion", this means that everything which can we have an opinion, can have in the mayority of times, references to sports that we had kind of success, like football(fulbo), an this episode, i see Rusty as a Cricket's Maradona, because in each examples, they got a better style of playing, for all the experiences that both have, Maradona playing in dirt squares that could turn into mud for a bad wheater, causing that he had a exelsive manage of the ball, and Rusty, well, obviously all the things that we see in the episode, Rusty in this episode proves to be a kind of Maradonian figure, someone that could beat all the adversities to become one of the best, but also never losing the heart in the process.

Thanks for the shout out. At Rusty's house that isn't a chain link fence out the front. It's a decorative wire fence that is very trendy for older period homes. I also noticed that in playing in the front yard, Digger bowls a no ball (an illegal delivery) as at least part of his front foot has to be behind the popping crease (the line on the ground).
Another subtle point about this episode is the name chosen for Rusty's Sister, Dusty. This is a nod to a 1947 Australian novel by Frank Dalby Davidson titled Dusty. The titular Dusty is a Dingo / Red Kelpie cross that works as a sheep dog but is in conflict between its Kelpie and Dingo natures, with its Dingo heritage often leading it astray.

Huh, that's an interesting USA edit - after Rusty asks if there was something wrong with his old school, when Jack says "there is something going on with me" (16:56). In Australia, he outright says "there is something wrong with me".

I noticed something regarding Bandit and his family in the 80s. His nasty and cruel attitude was alienating his family. It’s implied this had had been going on for a long period of time and the family was entirely dysfunctional.
Keeping in mind this is all coming from Bandit’s perspective. He had been probably feeling a lot of guilt for years of his life and all these issues with his family piled up into an internal conflict that was gargantuan. A mountain too steep to deal with. He probably felt like it WAS his fault. Especially with his competitive side nearly instilling toxic lessons in his children that could’ve brought an ugly cycle of entitlement and nastiness that would never end.
Bandit is not a perfect dad. It’s the hard lessons he had to learn and come to terms with that he feels like he broke his old family apart and could’ve done it all over again out of pride of his winning streak or his want for control. He had to learn to get his crap together before he could even think of being a worthy father himself and needed to learn just like his kids. I was thinking of the “Squash” and “Obstacle Course” episode when talking this.
I also think the “Kids” episode is possibly an unintended allegory for him trying to talk to his mother, coming to terms with his own baggage and that he truly never WAS the favourite, explaining why he was acting out so much as a child, causing said problems that eventually led to years of resentment and a broken family before eventual reconciliation and healing.
The beach episode with Bandit spacing out is probably the result of all this pain he bottled up for years. Him finally letting all the pain and throwing it away so he can finally move on is a very cathartic, especially for kids who have separated parents and can have an outlet to heal from a traumatic experience.
This is all implied though. The show is so smartly written that it lets the audience figure things out on their own rather than spelling it out. I would hope that you talk about it in a future video because it would definitely be a great discussion about Bandit as a character and his significant character development.

I know 10 months late. Doing some research led me to believe that Rusty's dad job in the Australian Army is that of a flight medic. Reasons for this are the mention of Dustoff, the multiple examples of UH-60 being shown in drawing form and in the background, and the color of his beret. The rifle green beret is reserved for soldiers in the Royal Australian Regiment and in an article written by Task & Purpose "Here’s the fascinating story behind this Army paramedic’s distinct flight mask" it is mentioned that Australian flight medics wore rifle green berets as their typical headgear.
or of course the simply answer that he's just a infantryman.

To answer your question at 20:26. "Pies" is a derogatory term for each ball that a bowler bowls ("pitches"). To say somebody bowls pies means they bowl slow, have no movement, no trickery, and are also boringly accurate (they don't even bowl wide balls). I guess in baseball it would be like someone who just pitches slow, straight over the centre of the plate, every time and is easy and predictable to hit. It may come from the saying "Easy as pie". When he says "four bits" he's making the hand signal for "four runs" (which is like a "semi" home run, you get four runs for hitting the ball into the fence, not over). I don't know why they're substituting "bits" for "runs". Dog food? I can't get the full context because the full episode isn't here on youtube and I haven't seen it yet.
