I’m a 50 yr old kiwi. My kids are a little old for bluey so I’d never seen it. But I heard about this through cricket channels. So I watched it. Cried like a baby.

Yup, that’s Bluey for ya. 20 yr old American, no kids. This show is something truly special.
This episode made my house very dusty as I got a lot of it in my eyes too.
What I found interesting about the episode is that unanimously makes people feel a bit teary. My wife was teary because he hits the ball to his sister. I was a little emotional when he walks off and it transitions to him being in the Aussie team. All the hard work paying off. Interestingly a lot of my friends wives say the same thing as my wife, and my mates all think the same as me. Very well crafted episode.

My 6 year son and 3 year old daughter are now playing cricket because of this episode. They were bought a cricket set by my cricket mad brother who doesn’t have kids, watched this episode and thought it was great. They now want their uncle to teach them how to play cricket. Just wonderful.

the cricket episode was one of the best pieces of fictional sports content period. it had all the best of sports plots condensed into less than ten minutes. jarrod's analysis was longer than the episode itself!

My wife said this episode could be our kids equivalent to “The Sandlot”.
As a mom to two girls obsessed with bluey this was a pleasant surprise.. Just for the sake of anyone on this channel who hasnt heard much about Bluey I guess the other bit of trivia they should know that is that the show is about dogs and created specifically with a restricted color palette based on the limitations of "dog vision" - so it's actually as much a show for dogs as for kids. I know many dogs who love watching bluey!

Can't believe they worked on such little details with such perfection on a cartoon for kids! This is too good for just a cartoon. Amazing!
Its a great episode, and because its Bluey it gets so many details about cricket perfect, but like all Bluey episodes it isn't really about its subject. Tickle Crabs wasn't actually about Tickle Crabs, Fairytale was wasn't really about the 1980s, even though it gets all the details of those kid's games right. That's what is so amazing about Bluey, it does the work to get every detail right, while the subject is only ever a a background to its stories, that focus almost always on kids growing up and their relationships with their parents. The Cricket episode shows the game of cricket and how it fits in to Australian life perfectly, while it is actually telling a story about Rusty growing up, and the relationship he has with his Dad while he is away on military service.
Its that emotional core of the story that story that makes it accessible to people who don't know anything about cricket. It is a wonderful advertisement for the game because after drawing people in with a simple, engaging story about Rusty growing up, it then gives the audience such a wonderful, loving representation of the game.
The quote from Rusty's dad is what makes this a great show for kids to watch

Mate, Cricket premiered in Australia on June 11 2023, which was also day 5 of Test Cricket World Championship. It's next big airing was when it was voted number 1 on Blueyfest. What was the date of Blueyfest you say? 19 November 2023.
The Bluey episode cricket... It's what Aussies watch before we go out and beat India in a Final.
@my_father_sorry_i_am_lying_now Stop crying loser. So what if catches are dropped, happens all the time. That is on the fielding team. And in the Final, Rohit himself stated after the toss if he won, he would have batted first. A Champion Team will always beat a team full of Champions. In the finals Australia out fielded both teams and save a lot of runs and stopped a lot of boundaries. The better team won on the day, end of story.
The park in this episode is actually based off a park right near my house, you can tell by the positioning of the bike jumps and basketball hoop in the back and the shelter on the side

Did anyone else notice the reason Rusty gave his sister a high catch is because he was teaching her how to catch before he went to bat?
1 small detail that you missed... When Rusty was telling his Dad about facing the leather ball and in the letter that the Dad wrote, he was overseas in an Army posting wearing AUSCAM, His Dad's a Digger which is why he was always playing cricket at his friends place after school.
What I find interesting is that all the dogs in the show have dog jobs
@@baalrog887but they don't stick their heads out of their cars when they drive , a trope that many other cartoons use. This is a good tool to show that under the floppy ears and fur, they are 'people' with people issues.
They even nailed the Beret and badge. He's 6RAR, based in Brisbane. Rusty even runs out onto the Gabba in Brisbane when he's playing for Australia at the end.

Watch Sleepytime and baby race. This show does emotion like no other kids show.
This is the normal Bluey viewing experience - kids smiling and laughing, mum and dad smiling and crying.
I started watching Bluey about a year ago, courtesy of my 2 year old. And I envy Aus and Eng kids so much!!! Bluey and Peppa Pig are fantastic cartoons to teach kids about life. I myself have learnt a lot about parenting from Bandit and Chilli.
Loved the point about how even international batters have their game shaped by the environment they played in as kids.
Gully cricket probably trained many Indian batters to play with a straight bat as that's where most of the scoring opportunities are when you're playing on narrow streets (i.e gullies)
Edit: Also just remembered a story Rahul Dravid once told about playing on matting wickets in Bangalore, which made him really good at negotiating uneven bounce and movement, which probably was one of the reasons he averaged 68 in England.
I am a cricket tragic. This was beautiful. I have been known to keep watching Bluey long after the kids have lost interest.

I lived in Australia for 4 years for uni, so I'm a little familiar with what cricket is and a bit of the lore behind it even if I never watch a game. This seven minutes cartoon episode however, made we want to watch a game of the sport in its entirety and even try a game of backyard cricket (where I've only seen how it's like in various media). If they can do that to a 32-year old Indonesian that lives in a cricket-less (or... very, very minimum amount) country, I can only imagine what can it do to other little kids around the world. I like what you said about how a sport is represented matters as much as how it is played. Ted Lasso gave me thesame feeling with football

Growing up as a West Aussie, obsessed cricket fan and player, I considered the sports relative worldwide obscurity as a badge of honour. But now I can see the future health of the sport can only benefit from its growing recognition and promotion. Marvellous!

It's weird to say it like this, but 2/almost 2 decades ago I played a version of cricket for the first time in the midwest. My neighbors had Australian family and they made a "Midwestern Cricket set" PVC pipe as the wicket, a plastic bat flattened with a piece of wood or plastic mended to it, and a tennis ball at first as the ball. Played in our local park. I spent years playing this, kick the can, and tennis court baseball with this group of mostly older kids during my formidable years.
I remember often and fondly and now feel old somehow as a 27 year old.
I’m not a cricket fan but that was one of the most charming episodes of Bluey ever.
American here. Plenty of Bluey is streamed at my place. I watched this video bc I was curious about someone who made a breakdown video about Bluey. It seemed like a novel idea.
Great breakdown of the Bluey episode, I wouldn't have picked up on any of those details. As for my kids, they haven't been taken by this cricket episode but they do play "Keeppie Uppie" every time they have a balloon, they've taught their grannies how to dance over a video call, and they play "Shadowlands" when it's sunny out. So, even though my kids haven't tried to recreate cricket in the backyard, I have seen them imitate other episodes from the show so I agree there are likely kids all around the world who are trying to recreate the cricket episode in their own way bc that's what kids do.
Don't know if anyone caught the spectacular result on Sunday in a test between Australia and the West Indies when a little known bowler by the name of Josephs who had been injured the day before came out and bowled 7 wickets in one session gifting the windies the win the first win in Australia since 1997 two ex Windies players turned commentators including Brian Lara where in tears at the result
My boys love Bluey and I hope this helps them get into Cricket. I wish there were more parks with cricket pitches like that in England too!

As an American... and not just that, a Texan... I understood a whole lot of words that you said.
But almost none of the details. And I loved it. I loved this episode of Bluey, and I feel like it taught me more about the (to me) incomprehensible (and weirdly awesome) sport of Cricket than anything or anyone has ever managed to do before
So thanks for reminding me, and filling in a few gaps. The deeper meaning was already clear (yeah, maybe I teared up a little at this episode?), but the details of the game are pretty awesome.

My nieces and nephew’s know nothing about cricket. But the questions I received about this episode. Pretty funny. And tbh the creator has made our country a shitload of money out of his brilliant brain. Like Rowling and Tolkien. Very minimal resources for huge benefit. The phrase "it's just not cricket" stems from the fact that cricket has a reputation as being the most sportsmanlike of games; and every ball of every over of every match should reflect that.

This video is amazing and couldn’t be said better. Living in America, if people even know what cricket is to begin with, they would most likely think it’s some cheap baseball knockoff. I know that’s what I thought slightly for a while. But that’s because it’s not ever pushed out over here. With how international Bluey is (and also of course how this episode is amazing and very well-written) this will make cricket so much more popular around America and the world. I know it’s opened my eyes to cricket and made me interested in it, and it will 100% happen with many kids and adults too. Ludo Studios was so smart with this move.

Ive been waiting for this episode to come onto UK Tv. My daughter loves bluey so will be getting this on soon. Fireman Sam in early 90s had Sam playing cricket not sure of the impact on Welsh cricket though
Terrific content as usual! I sometimes watch Bluey with my kids. It is a light hearted show and people can relate to it. Have not watched this episode yet, but am going to do now. 😊

This is so true, i have a 2.5 yr old boy who had never been told about cricket, pick up a toy that looked like it could be used as a bat, and hit a ball around the yard saying "cricket". I put it down to watching Bluey maybe only 2 or 3 times at that point. Now im an ex cricketer so it was going to happen at some stage, but Bluey beat me to it at an age i never thought it would happen

Rusty is a tall redhead guy that went to school (Grey) with me in South Africa, same one Graham and Sean Pollock did. Rusty did very well for himself, pace bowler who could bowl anyone out! (And not that no one could him out like in Bluey)

60 yo Aussie MAN here, mate I enjoyed that video, yes I remember the start of WSC under lights & Tony Greig explaining fielding positions using EA Sports vid games, Kerry Packer created a great product with that, oh, don't forget "Strop" (John Cornell) actually went to Kerry with the Idea
My 8 year old girl is hooked on cricket now, thanks to Bluey. I've got her a bat and wicket, and have taught myself how to bowl googly. Nice that there's 10 stores around Toronto where I can buy all things cricket
As an American whose only other prior exposure to cricket is that Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy book (British cricket), I understood like 5% of this lol. Excellent video, and fascinating how much detail Ludo packed into this episode. Being neither Australian nor much into sports, I cannot fully understand or appreciate everything you talked about, but it is an interesting window into another world nonetheless.
I had the dont back away moment when i was 16 first game of A grade. Small town. Id played 4th grade for a couple of years and i was used to pissing off adults. I was a bowler and an average bat. The club was struggling and 2nd last game of the season i played 2nd grade. Got caught on the boundry on 94. I wasnt really a great bat. Its one of my best scores. Last game found myself in a grade against the premiers. I was alot better at indoor and was actually playing a grade agianst alot of them. I had one of those days with the ball. Everything fell into place and took 4fa of the top order. They beat us easy but i batted 11 and walked out to full slips and short leg. Of course i backed away got hit in the thigh. I didnt wear a helmet or thighpad. Clearly rattled by the sledging and quickest id faced. Camly the bloke at square leg who knew my dad said dont back away push forward. I did and shakely made 15 not out just avoided the follow on. So that episode is so spot on in every detail. I love listening to andrew johns about when your a kid in the backyard and crafting your trade. They say hard work and effort will beat just ability. Nearly always true. My kids are teenagers and we get stuck watching bluey occasionally. I wish it had of been around when they werel little. Sorry for the rant.

I'm not sure Bluey is really aimed at 4 year olds - I think its Joe Brumm reminiscing about raising his two girls, remembering his old dog (Bandit), with a healthy dose of imagination thrown in. Like so much good Kids TV it crosses the age gap. I probably love it more than my kids and regularly makes me laugh (and cry). Many of the locations, including the cricket pitch in this episode, are based on real locations in Brisbane.

What the US version of this episode doesn’t get is that Rusty’s dad is deployed in an unnamed Middle East or similar location as a member of the Australian Army. Other episodes where Rusty is picked up from school by his dad show his dad to wear a rifle green beret, denoting that he is a member of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, an infantry Battalion stationed in Brisbane. The nickname of 6RAR is Bluedog as their mascot is an Australian Blue Cattle Dog or Blue Heeler.
What makes this poignant is that Rusty gets these letters while his dad is in a war zone. Absent, but still present. As a veteran with kids, this resonates hard.
More trivia, Anthony the blue Wiggle was also in the Australian Army.

The Americans are great at getting the spirit of baseball and its connection with beauty and transcendence (The Natural, Field of Dreams etc). This is the first time the beauty and transcendence of Cricket has been accurately visualised in art. Blessings on the creators of Bluey for condensing all that is good and precious about cricket into 7 minutes.

As a parent I refuse to admit how many times Bluey has made me cry.
I well up at the end of this episode every time.
As an outsider, the response to this episode seems to have the same impact for cricket in Australia, as the manga and anime "Hikaru no Go" had for Go (sort of like a version of chess) in japan.
One of the other reasons Bluey is great is that appeals to both kids AND adults. Often you'll hear some adults really enjoying it. Great well written scripts and good entertainment and lessons for kids on life.
A weird aside, the background music running through the episode sounds like a variant of Oh Lord by Pele which were a moderately successful 90's English band, with the emphasis on moderate.

As a dad, I don't mind the kids watching bluey as there are few episodes I don't enjoy watching myself. This one is my favourite.

I never knew there was so much to bluey. I never bothered to watch it with my kids. Just that my 16 months daughter dances to the intro music. Guess need to give it a try. 😅
Definitely. It's easily the top tier choice for a kids show you can watch along your kids, since they designed it around that. There are so many episodes that focus on the parents and so many topics are brought up from this show that make you realize that it's not a show aimed to be for just kids like all the other modern day made crap parents have to chore through.
Also random other side tip. Don't let kids watch Cocomelon. It's terrible for them lol.

It's an interesting thought, cricket depictions in the media generally are scant.
Compare that to say baseball/gridiron in the states. Just about every sitcom has a baseball/softball episode. How many films have been made about baseball or gridiron teams/players overcoming the odds etc.
I don't even play baseball but I love Sandlot or League of their Own or Field of Dreams.
Cricket needs some "ripping yarns" treatment. Get Joe public aware of how good/dramatic the game can be. Not just standing in a field for 5 days and still ending in a draw.
