Thank god you are sticking with the sub! I get & respect that people have fond memories of it & are nostalgic, but in 99% of cases, the sub is superior to the dub. And it's no different for Death Note. (Also, I feel like switching just breaks the experience to some extent, usually better to stick with the one you started with if the quality is somewhat there) Also very happy you're enjoying Death Note this much! I think that from Light's perspective, "evil" means something different. For Light, anyone who is against him is evil because they are rejecting his "peaceful new world." So, from that point of view, "L" is indeed evil.
They fr tried making him a lonely loser to try and make it relatable for the watcher but that's the whole fugin point of him, he's THE top student every year who isn't a nerd. He's someone who even in human terms is high with him having even higher goals after gaining the book.

Like, if someone do the same thing as light (only killing criminals...) without trying to be a God (so no only hearth attack death etc), it's basically impossible to prove the existence of the Death Note and even if you do, it will be extremely hard to find the one using it.
Yay! Another upload, this will probably be my +6th time watching this show from start to finish. One of my first anime along with a pretty funny oldie Ranma 1/2, but Death Note really made me take off in the Anime world, it's amazing. Thank you for watching Flexi!
God i forgot how much i love Death Note. I haven't seen it in years. It was one of the poster anime for emo/outcast kids all over the world. Brings back memories of watching this with my friends in middle school. Two reasons why Light does kill so many so quick: he said he was sure he would have been punished soon for using the book and he wanted to make people sure a “divine” judgment was falling upon evils
Light is very dedicated to the cause, he got obsessed :D fun fact the INTERPOL members' nameplates have the names of famous soccer players from a number of countries and the flags on the nameplates corresponded with their namesakes' country too :) you are right it would be smart to make it all less suspicious with the killings, though Light did say in the first episode he wants people to notice that bad guys are being punished :) now he is the famous Kira :) he already cracked the whole internet idea back in the early 2000s how clever :D people really are different when anonymous compared to public life :) wasnt very smart to kill that guy on TV though, L truly played him :P the battle for the ages is perfectly set up :) Ryuk is just having the best time :D
Hello. I am Japanese. I read Death Note in real time in Jump magazine when I was a child. I was shocked at the time to know that it was serialized in a children's book. 😂
I read the entire manga series before the anime came out, and I was hooked. The story was so good, that it was the first series that I was extremely into. No other series even got close. It even inspired me to make my own original, twisting dark story, which I'm slowly planning and writing out.
He wanted to make Kira famous so other criminals would get afraid of Kira; that's why he wrote too many names at the same time so they get killed the same way with a heart attack.
Conflict between Kira and L so mindblowing. Remember, L have been Detective for years, while Kira only got Death Note for few days, wait till he use it MASTERFULLY.
When the plot says “Write a name on the deathnote and they will die” the impression is more of a child’s play at least for me, but no one expects in episode 2 this will get too serious and too real and the never ending debate of two sides of justice. Also the flaws and immaturity of Light makes this more believable. Even when you are the most intelligent person when you are young, wisdom comes with age. This is the perfect example of that. As a teenager when I saw this, I rooted for Light. But now as an adult, episode 1 I instantly recognize how stupid Light is.
"his outfit, what a rocker" YUP! Ryuk's design was based on 80's rock and metal stars. Originally he was supposed to look just like their human versions, basically modern emo eboy, but they scrapped the idea - thankfully.
It should be mentioned, that whenever you see a black screen, with writing on it, it's usually pretty important. It's usually an excerpt from the book's instructions, and it will help you better understand the rules that Light has to play by. Light indeed messed up by using the notebook so much and calling attention to himself. This is one of his flaws. Using the book is almost a compulsion for him - an addiction, perhaps. He tends to act compulsively at times, yet he's still a very intelligent person. So far, his intelligence had been able to compensate for his flaws, of which another is arrogance. Be prepared for a fascinating cat and mouse game. It is interesting to note that I had to switch to "Light Mode" on order to see the text of my response.
Death note is my personal favorite show. It has its flaws, but I love how deep you can dive into all of the symbolism, dialogue, and characters. Even just the simple premise of Ryuk thinking the human world is so lively and exciting while Light sees it as dull (similar to how Ryuk sees the shinigami realm) is a really cool dynamic. There will be plenty more connections to make, plans to analyze, and story beats to dive into. Also Mamoru Miyano is my favorite VA and him as light is my favorite overall VA performance ever. The cat and mouse game begins, where both sides are simultaneously the cat and the mouse Also, with naruto being my no3 anime, youre only missing Code Geass and then you would be watching all of my top 3 anime simultaneously lol
This actually is an illustration of an grand ethical question: do person can decide the fate of another person? You can solve this question by at very least three different ways generally, and countless more in details.
L is the GOAT! My man narrowed the scope from global to a single region in Japan and more or less deduced the method of killing. Light has an access to a killing method that is mostly untraceable and wouldn't even have been considered by most people - and L has already cornered him to this extent. It's just like you said, Flexie - if Light had spaced the murders out & chose different types of death (which he actively decided against - incredibly thoughtless decision also driven by hubris and wanting to think of himself as a god), chances are he wouldn't even have been discovered at this point. And even then, if his hubris didn't lead to him trying to kill L, they would have had basically no leads, they wouldn't have been able to pinpoint his location, they wouldn't have been able to make deductions about the method of killing either. The "genius god" got outplayed in Episode 2 already.
Yeah but his goal was to be known, that's just what he wants. Spacing his murders and choosing different methods isn't worth talking about because it wouldn't be productive towards his goal. It wasn't a "thoughtless" decision, it's just a goal that YOU personally don't agree with. Killing Lind L Taylor was dumb though.

Light and L had the best Good vs Evil chase I’ve ever seen. They are both super smart and they will read the other like a book. I will be honest, I watched this anime dubbed in Spanish and the actors did amazing so I’m watching it in Japanese for the first time with you.
Counter point, the idea is for Light's 'purpose' to be noticed. If people die just a little more quickly than usual, there doesnt appear to be someone 'passing judgment' like what he's trying to accomplish here. He wants to be known about so that criminals feel threatened. You **could** write out scenarios and make it harder to tell, but in the end, not only does that not demonstrate a consistency to 'being judged' but also, it eats up his time as a hard working student. He's got a lot of hobbies that he has to maintain while doing this, so the names are the maximum of what he can currently dish out, and this is something of a theory of why he's doing exactly what he's doing.

The situation with Lind L Taylor is that, L found a prisoner that was scheduled to be executed this day and offered him a pardoning case he lived through the whole think. In case Taylor died hw would lost nothing since he was going to killed anyway, avoiding any crime to be done and actually even giving a chance to save his life. L tried at his best to not cross the line of choosing over the life of others preserving his sense of morality and honestly that's already one of the best scenes in the anime considering how he found a way to execute the plan still keeping him morals . If I'm not mistaken that is explained better in the manga or the movie
I think Lind L smiled cause he was going to be put to death and some detective then says " ill pardon you from excecution if you say these lines on tv and not die" seeing as the magic book isnt common knowledge , he would think hes getting a free pass. And reasonably so

Which is why he made it obvious that the Mass Heart Attacks were in fact unnatural and possible murders. Can't help but point out that L's entire plan to pinpoint Light's location hinged on Light's immediate response to the live televised provocation. In other words, had Light missed the live telecast & responded by killing Lind L Taylor after a while, it would have been much more difficult to pinpoint his exact location. Nevertheless any response by Kira - delayed or otherwise would have helped to answer L's other 2 questions (i.e Kira's ability to kill without contact & the need for a name & a face).
Ah I remember like 9 yrs ago my dad got some og blockbuster type dvds from a friend who didn't want them. Some British comedies and.. the og live action double disc set WITH the book lol. I put it aside as I was finishing up some remedial classes for college but would occasionally leave it around the house to scare the shit out my family😅 by the time I was finished and ready to watch the movie my mom had thrown it out lmao.
Regarding the L & Light distinction. The Kanji for Lights name regularly gets interpreted as Tsuki( which also means light) so a lot of early manga readers and translators actually thought his name was Tsuki. It wasn't until a certain chapter that his name pointed for readers and translators was actually Light. Anime viewers or later manga readers never actually made that mistake though since it was already figured out.

You said that very Smart people who get bored are very scary. I think high IQ people are considered smart, but there are high IQ people with also high EQ out there, and they don't get bored easily because they are more wise and know that your own high capability are worth of helping people who can not help themselves. The world is very complex and filled with problems. It's impossible to get bored if you see the world from multiple perspectives. It's more likely to be getting very frustrated and depressed until self-inflicted death.

Just a side note, while the episode exposed Light's god complex, it did a good job in showing L as a perfect match for him. After all, L had no qualms about sacrificing Lind L Taylor as a guinea pig (yes, he was a death row criminal but it's not so different from Light killing criminals). And Light isn't the only one to call himself "justice", L does it as well.
This is such a big mistake for Light. He betrayed his principles...he was willing to kill a detective, not a criminal. And that allowed them to confirm that he was real. If only he had just ignored that taunt from L.

He shouldn't restrain himself at all and since sees himself as a god then he should unleash his full power. If Light genuinely cared more about the world and humanity as a whole, than he wouldn't care about whether or not people know Kira exists. But he wants the attention and the fame, so he gives himself an MO of only killing with heart attacks. He also doesn't believe people will become good on their own; he believes they will only stay good if they are afraid of Kira. In other words, he's using fear to subjugate people.
Actually, if the world knows of his existence, then people would be much more dissuaded of doing crimes. So the world knowing about Kira is useful towards creating a "better" world without crime. "He believes they will only stay good if they are afraid of Kira". Replace Kira with the goverment and prison, and it's basically the same thing Most people are afraid of going to prison therefore don't commit crime. But you don't advocate to have a world without prisons do you ?
When u realize that Light and L are the two sides of the same coin which is Justice.... L signifies the Bright side of Justice and Light signifies the Dark/Extreme side of Justice.... This Anime is absolute Platinum ❤
Light will never compare with L in terms of intelligence, the whole difference is that Light always had information about everything. L acted blindly, and this is a huge advantage.
L is smarter, yes, but they aren't very far apart in terms of intelligence. L still had so much ressources, money, inluence over police and FBI. Light was just one 17/18 year old, one brain. Also they have different strengths, L is better at reasoning : deductions, induction, abduction, but Light is so much more creative with his plans, and manipulations.

My man narrowed the scope from global to a single region in Japan and more or less deduced the method of killing.
Light has an access to a killing method that is mostly untraceable and wouldn't even have been considered by most people - and L has already cornered him to this extent.
It's just like you said, Flexie - if Light had spaced the murders out & chose different types of death (which he actively decided against - incredibly thoughtless decision also driven by hubris and wanting to think of himself as a god), chances are he wouldn't even have been discovered at this point. And even then, if his hubris didn't lead to him trying to kill L, they would have had basically no leads, they wouldn't have been able to pinpoint his location, they wouldn't have been able to make deductions about the method of killing either.
The "genius god" got outplayed in Episode 2 already.
L also used a human life as bait to prove his crackpot theory; just sayin' :P

Yeah but his goal was to be known, that's just what he wants. Spacing his murders and choosing different methods isn't worth talking about because it wouldn't be productive towards his goal. It wasn't a "thoughtless" decision, it's just a goal that YOU personally don't agree with. Killing Lind L Taylor was dumb though.

Light and L had the best Good vs Evil chase I’ve ever seen. They are both super smart and they will read the other like a book.
I will be honest, I watched this anime dubbed in Spanish and the actors did amazing so I’m watching it in Japanese for the first time with you.
It is explained in the end of Episode 1 that Light does wanna be recognized. He doesnt want to Go unnoticed
Counter point, the idea is for Light's 'purpose' to be noticed. If people die just a little more quickly than usual, there doesnt appear to be someone 'passing judgment' like what he's trying to accomplish here. He wants to be known about so that criminals feel threatened. You **could** write out scenarios and make it harder to tell, but in the end, not only does that not demonstrate a consistency to 'being judged' but also, it eats up his time as a hard working student. He's got a lot of hobbies that he has to maintain while doing this, so the names are the maximum of what he can currently dish out, and this is something of a theory of why he's doing exactly what he's doing.

The situation with Lind L Taylor is that, L found a prisoner that was scheduled to be executed this day and offered him a pardoning case he lived through the whole think.
In case Taylor died hw would lost nothing since he was going to killed anyway, avoiding any crime to be done and actually even giving a chance to save his life. L tried at his best to not cross the line of choosing over the life of others preserving his sense of morality and honestly that's already one of the best scenes in the anime considering how he found a way to execute the plan still keeping him morals .
If I'm not mistaken that is explained better in the manga or the movie
I think Lind L smiled cause he was going to be put to death and some detective then says " ill pardon you from excecution if you say these lines on tv and not die" seeing as the magic book isnt common knowledge , he would think hes getting a free pass. And reasonably so

but in defense of his strategy, his goal is to create a world without bad people so he doesn't just need to KILL bad people, he also needed to deter people from turning bad. Which is why he made it obvious that the Mass Heart Attacks were in fact unnatural and possible murders. He needed the world to know SOMEONE (god of the new world) is killing bad people so they won't don't turn bad. like he said in episode 1

Can't help but point out that L's entire plan to pinpoint Light's location hinged on Light's immediate response to the live televised provocation. In other words, had Light missed the live telecast & responded by killing Lind L Taylor after a while, it would have been much more difficult to pinpoint his exact location. Nevertheless any response by Kira - delayed or otherwise would have helped to answer L's other 2 questions (i.e Kira's ability to kill without contact & the need for a name & a face).
Ah I remember like 9 yrs ago my dad got some og blockbuster type dvds from a friend who didn't want them. Some British comedies and.. the og live action double disc set WITH the book lol. Regarding the L & Light distinction. The Kanji for Lights name regularly gets interpreted as Tsuki( which also means light) so a lot of early manga readers and translators actually thought his name was Tsuki. It wasn't until a certain chapter that his name pointed for readers and translators was actually Light. Anime viewers or later manga readers never actually made that mistake though since it was already figured out.

You are probably right with your comment on smart people, but I would phrase it differently. You said that very Smart people who get bored are very scary.
I think high IQ people are considered smart, but there are high IQ people with also high EQ out there, and they don't get bored easily because they are more wise and know that your own high capability are worth of helping people who can not help themselves. The world is very complex and filled with problems. It's impossible to get bored if you see the world from multiple perspectives. It's more likely to be getting very frustrated and depressed until self-inflicted death.

Just a side note, while the episode exposed Light's god complex, it did a good job in showing L as a perfect match for him. After all, L had no qualms about sacrificing Lind L Taylor as a guinea pig (yes, he was a death row criminal but it's not so different from Light killing criminals). And Light isn't the only one to call himself "justice", L does it as well.
As you watch other episodes, it goes wilder and crazy. You will see more intense mind battles between L and Light.
The Dub for this show is iconic and it easier to understand the rules as 1st watch

This is such a big mistake for Light. He betrayed his principles...he was willing to kill a detective, not a criminal. And that allowed them to confirm that he was real. If only he had just ignored that taunt from L.

I see 2 extreme options: 1. He shouldn't kill anyone because killing is bad and even the life of a criminal is precious because he should consider and think over his deeds and should have a chance for a redemption, or 2. He shouldn't restrain himself at all and since sees himself as a god then he should unleash his full power. For some time he was oscillating between those ideas.

If Light genuinely cared more about the world and humanity as a whole, than he wouldn't care about whether or not people know Kira exists. But he wants the attention and the fame, so he gives himself an MO of only killing with heart attacks. He also doesn't believe people will become good on their own; he believes they will only stay good if they are afraid of Kira. In other words, he's using fear to subjugate people.
Actually, if the world knows of his existence, then people would be much more dissuaded of doing crimes. So the world knowing about Kira is useful towards creating a "better" world without crime. "He believes they will only stay good if they are afraid of Kira". Replace Kira with the goverment and prison, and it's basically the same thing Most people are afraid of going to prison therefore don't commit crime. But you don't advocate to have a world without prisons do you ?

Light will never compare with L in terms of intelligence, the whole difference is that Light always had information about everything. L acted blindly, and this is a huge advantage.
L is smarter, yes, but they aren't very far apart in terms of intelligence. L still had so much ressources, money, inluence over police and FBI. Light was just one 17/18 year old, one brain. Also they have different strengths, L is better at reasoning : deductions, induction, abduction, but Light is so much more creative with his plans, and manipulations.
