The ever confusing Smart Function. It's fantastic, but not the easiest thing to wrap your head around initially. So I've been doing a lot of thinking regarding the best way to set it up and I've figured it out and wanted to share my findings with you all! So here we go!
If you'd like to support the channel, you can send a Super Thanks! Or buy some Merch ( a coffee mug perhaps): www.redbubble....
Or even better... You can donate directly, or buy me a beer as thanks via Paypal: www.paypal.me/...
Every proceed goes directly into a "from the donations" fund strictly for acquiring camera gear that you'd be interested in knowing about. Unless you tell me you've donated beer money, then beer it is.

A year and a half with this camera and I confidently think I know 10% of its ability. It is a lot of camera!

Thank you for explaining the smart function setup. I am less confused than I was. So now I will have to go through the E Dial settings, then set up my Smart Functions. Then all I have to do is live long enough get used to using it...

Just got my K3-iii, thanks for the video, now I realize I should set up "macro" and "bird" user modes so I'll have different smart functions, otherwise I would have just kept switching between TAv and M like on my K-70 :)

Thank you Kobie for an easy explanation of this. I just received my K-3 III and looking at all the functions posibilities overwhelms me at times. I thought my KP was complicated, but I did master it, so I will master this camera too.

    Hello from France.
Could you make the same video but for the setting of animal photos.
With all the AF changes and firmware upgrades, I am completely lost.
In addition, Pentax makes firmware changes and does not change its operating instructions.
What are the best settings for photographing deer or chamois.
What are the best settings for birds.
Thank you in advance for your advice
    Amicably

I like the approach you took to this tutorial. There is so much to learn about the K3iii, that this more systematic method you took to explain was very helpful. I wonder about whether a series of tutorials that would take this same approach toward focusing on the most fundamental uses one should master. Maybe make connections to the Pentax Forum eManual for reference. Just a thought. Again, thanks for the time and effort you put into your work to help us out.

Thanks for the hard work. I am 70 years old and I cannot thank you for a reason known to you, since I do not own all the technology for transferring funds, and the visa does not accept payments.

Couldn’t agree more. I use the K3iii for animals more than anything so shutter speed, crop, AF type are on the short list of features I keep on the S Fn. I do have a mono mode, though, that uses the subject recognition AF and full auto so I don’t really use the S Fn then because I just need to adjust ISO with the third dial (P mode for shutter, aperture)

Have you tried the TAV mode, where you set the shutter speed and aperture, and the camera adjusts the ISO to suit the lighting conditions? It’s like a kind of Auto/Manual, where the camera keeps up with whatever settings you’re using to get the effects you want. I’d never tried it until I saw Kobie using it, but it’s an interesting way of working. It doesn’t suit me all of the time, but I do use it sometimes.
Kobie’s right when he says that the K-3 III is a lot of camera. Even after seven months, I’m still just scratching the surface of what it can do, and the improvement in resolution over the original K-3 continues to amaze me, especially with the * (Star) lenses. The DA * 16-50 PLM lens is so perfect for around-town use. I thought I’d miss the 50-135 part of the DA 18-135, but I don’t, especially when I realize that I can crop as needed and still get hi-res pictures.

So from this I take it that you set up your user modes first, then decide what the specifics of the s.Fn option will be. Now I just to need to set up some user modes!

Exactly. At least that's how I've done it.

@@KobieMC Funnily enough for all my safari work on the 150-450mm I just shoot wide open at 500th and let the ISO take care of itself. On my DA16-85, generally it's F8 at the lowest ISO I can get and forget about the shutter speed.

I never really use the smart function button. I've only one used item there and that is the AF mode... and you know why? Because I always thought, that I have to press the sfn button constantly while I'm using the back weel to toggel through the function... 😂
That was to complicated for my fingers.
Now I see the first time in your video that you only have to hit it once and than scroll to it... I don't know, how I came to the idea of pressing it all the time...
So thank you... I will add some functions now 😊
