  • In this video, I show you how to make a complete DIY Hobo Canteen and Cook Set using the Bushpot that I showed how to make in a previous video. That video will be linked on screen. This is a great skill to own and a cheap way to have a very usable and easily replaceable canteen and cook set.

    I thought about doing a "trash to treasure" type survival kit myself, using a can and a Gatorade bottle, heavy mil trash bag, ziplock bags, can stoves, plasticware and condiments from fast food places, old clothes and blankets, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and so on. It's all already out there, on your channel... which is awesome, btw.

    I really like cheap and useful items that I can make or modify to use in survival and bushcraft. This is a concept that I came up with some years ago. Hope you like it and find it as useful as I do. Please note that I misspoke about it being airtight and waterproof as it has holes in the side for the bail handle. You would either have to attach the bail handle to the hose clamps or leave it off to be completely sealed. Thanks again for watching and please leave a like and your comments in the section below!

      I was just saying that on my other comment. However if you attached it to the clamp hose instead of the can it would be air and water tight

    I have this drink/lunch insulated cooler bag that double zips the front panel all the way flat and is the perfect size for that big Gatorade bottle & the top stuck out just enough to take the cap off when it's zipped. It even has long adjustable back straps & front & side pockets. I used to fill them with filtered water from my fridge & toss them in my freezer, then stick them in the bag in the morning and it would melt at the perfect rate that I got to drink ice water all day. Doesn't really have anything to do with survival, but it just reminded me of it! I know what bag I'll be using if I ever get around to building my own kit!

    This kind of DIY project that uses common items and repurposes resources is perfect for those who are interested in emergency preparedness and survival who may have a limited budget or are prepping last minute or to supply those who have nothing and need some gear.
    We throw away so much (Or toss in recycling bins) stuff that can be used. I could outfit the Brady Bunch with camping gear from what gets tossed in my house and we're only three people. Your projects save money which could be spent on other things.

    Instead of using the military canteen bag which isn't exactly easy to find unless you live near a surplus store or order it online. You could use an old worn-out sock. And a carabiner and it will snap right on your belt. Just roll the sock over so it's double-walled and stick the Carabiner in it... the second smaller one hasn't even better purpose. Those smaller water bottles will hook up to several different water filtration kits.
    A plastic lid is good for keeping stuff out and maybe keep the can from making noise in your bag. But if you punch holes in the can to put the handles through strictly speaking it's not airtight. If you have something dry in it and you get super wet moisture will leak in through where the handles go through. You might want to somehow attach them to the clamp hoses instead of penetrating the can. If you were to do that it would be watertight and airtight. You can even find those lids for the small can as well. And the neat thing is you can make your pots and frying pans like you do and have a complete kit basically for a little bit of nothing. And if you lose it no big deal. My problem over the years has been thieves. People breaking into my storage areas and stealing my stuff. Which is why I try to keep my good stuff locked in the trunk of a car.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  3 роки тому

      Yes, that's a great idea. I came up with the no drill bail handle for the Stanley cook set after I made that DIY Bush pot video. I said that it was watertight but you are right that it's not with those holes in the side. If I were to film it again today I would do it differently.

    Consider using a pop top can to make this set. DO NOT POP THE TOP. Remove the top with a safety/side cutter opener and you will get a side ledge about 1/4" deep to insert back in the can (works on most pop top lids). Also get two plastic lids because you know one is going to break when you need it most. If I don't use it as a canteen then I'd fill it with a plastic bottle with screw top (p-nut butr) and add small bottle of alcohol fuel, matches, spoon, fork, etc to round out a good homemade field cooking kit. Add coffee filter to strain water or use as fire starter. Just my two cents really enjoy your channel and the creativity from junk to jewel!

    Not to be too picky... But it's not "water tight with the plastic lid" with the handle holes. If you attached the bail handle to the top hose clamp, it would be "air tight/water tight". I love reusing empty gator-aid bottles, you can freeze water in them to keep things cool them drink the water, when it melts. Good stuff, I love DIY solutions! Cheers!

    Not sure how accurate it is, but on a survival show called 'Man, Woman, Wild', they would boil the full plastic water bottles right in the fire. They said as long as there was water in it, the bottle wouldn't melt. They would get a bit sooty, but it always seemed to work. Of course they stressed it was a short term solution because heating plastic isn't something you want exposure to long term, but for a few days wouldn't hurt you too badly.

    Cantainer isn't air tight or even water tight. You have the bail handle through holes in the side of the can. Rest of the build is solid but might as well toss the lid away it's pretty useless. Unless I'm missing something.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  4 роки тому +1

      Lol, you're right! You would have to build it without the bail handle in order for it to be airtight and watertight! Not sure how I missed that one! Anyway good catch. The plastic lid would still make it a good container for storing items, but certainly not airtight or watertight as you said.
