Episode Overview
-----------------------------
In this video, rather than going deeper into the technical aspects of theme development, I discuss the need for theme development to begin with.
This video is more directed at new sellers to Shopify but for my freelance web developer audience, have a listen. This could be advice you pass down to your own clients as well.

Great video and I fully agree with it.
What I often see is people who are starting out with a limited budget and, as their first step, they hire a designer to create mockups for their store. Then they go around trying to find a developer to customise a theme for them to match the design, and it usually ends up getting pretty expensive because there are no themes that look very close to their design. For someone who's starting out with a limited budget, my recommendation is to find a designer who is familiar with different Shopify themes, so they can create a design based on a theme, and you won't have to do a lot of code customisations.
Another common problem I see is people buying premium themes or even using free themes, but not investing in great images. You can have the most beautiful and complete theme in the world, but if you have bad images, your store will look bad.
Thanks for this video, your courses are helping me in my journey of being a Shopify theme developer
Great video as always!
one thing you didn't mention (well you did but not in this way) is that if you're not finding an option you're looking for, you can always reach out to the support team behind premium themes (even if you are yet to buy the theme, you can demo it as much as you want).
other than that, great vid, really learned a lot from you and it's helped me (and by extension a ton of our merchants), I can't thank you enough for for making my job at theme support so much easier (and fun)!
Amazing! Thanks for the comment.
Just what I needed to hear. Thanks!
I fully agree. I advise most clients with moderate budget to pick/switch to a paid theme (sadly no comission system that I'm aware of), then if they're happy with my expertise and adivces, we are likely to work togehter in the future to customize this theme more in depth. I like some of the popular premium theme since the code base is clean, well maintainted and therefore easier to customize (compared to feature-rich themforest themes that have in my experiences more bugs, some bad code practices and dependancies that could be avoided). Only con with Shopify premium themes is that they look a little generic and lack uniqueness, but I believe we can build a branded custom site buidling on top of those premium themes.
Can you modify that premium theme easily and to what extend? Let’s say I like a paid theme and it suits my needs 70% but I would like to add a couple of custom things?
Of course any theme can be customized, there are little to no limitations to what can be done. For some advanced tasks apps can be necessary though.
a brilliant video mate
I have a product I wanna sell I just am on sure on gow exactly to costomize my website wether it should be perfect or not or just focus on just selling idk
honestly, This is the Honest Truth😍
Hello Chris,
My friend has her heart set on building her ecom in Shopify. I found a lot of things lacking. Is there a way to add custom properties to pre existing entities on the Shopify platform without using third party plugins ? (Most of them seem to be saving data on their servers not shopify ones)
Yep. Check out metafields. ua-cam.com/video/aEemVBqS3Yk/v-deo.html
Spot on!
What do you think about Envato Elements CMS Shopify templates, are they as good as the ones developed by Shopify?
Never looked at them. I would think it'd be safer to go through the Shopify store. Not sure if any of those themes are vetted, are they?
Hey chris, does you patereon still include all your Shopify skillshare courses?
Sure does! Access is valid only during patronage though.
Hi, I have a free Shopify theme. However I am not sure how to get the customer profile option. " As to let customers login in on the website so they won't have to re-enter the shipping information". Can you please help.
Every theme should have a customer section. Not sure what you mean by 'customer profile option'
I am building a Shopify store for a home decor client and looking to purchase a theme from Envato. Should I choose the "Regular" or "Extended" license for the project? Your professional advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.
My advice would be to buy from the official theme store (not Envato).

Can you create a video explaining how to place adobe xd inside the Shopify themes pages? It would help me a lot. with HTML? Because I went on the Shopify experts and they asked me around 200 Euro and I would love to learn myself but I don't have the start yet.
Already responded to your earlier comment. Please clarify what you mean by 'place adobe xd inside the Shopify themes pages'
Which premium theme do you recommend for vitamins and supplements? thanks
haha whichever your heart desires Wahida.
but in all seriousness, I recommend you choose one from the Shopify Theme Store. Those themes have been vetted by Shopify.
@@CodewithChristheFreelancer ok thanks so many to choose from lol
If we download themes from google and upload to Shopify store?
Can store ban ?
Not sure what you mean by downloading themes from Google but I think it would have to be a pretty special circumstance for Shopify to ban your store based on what you have in your theme.
@@CodewithChristheFreelancer if i use free theme and customize it perfectly and use free domain use ? Is it effects our sales or not ?

I need you help from you to customize my theme.
No problem. Any work enquires you can email directly at chris@christhefreelancer.com
Still not sure why I would need a paid theme over a free theme.
If that's where you're at, just use a free theme then.
This is halarious
The right theme my friend can make or break you and I am just now realizing this!
