I have a delicate question. I've believed myself to be straight most my life but after exposure to your videos I am beginning to question this. Are there per chance any women that would resemble you so that I may test my hypothesis?
hey, magnus. i think the reason you get cramps in your forearms when you’re doing two armed hangs with weight is because you’re applying a lot of force in a different position than when you do single armed hangs. and perhaps the reason why you don’t get it when you do two armed hangs without weight is because there is not enough weight, or force, to cause a cramp. i think when you do two armed hangs you put your forearms in an uncomfortable position. maybe it’s your anatomy or maybe it’s your form but that’s what it sounds like to me. great video btw!
Answer to the question at 9:30: Hanging with one hand, the body pivots so that the wrist articulation is closer to neutral grip, which is a stronger position for the wrist.
9:15 hanging by just one hand allows for some degree of body rotation that naturally comes due to the asymmetry in the distribution of weight. When hanging by two hands, both forearms in a forced, fixed pronated position, hence the additional strain in the pronator, supinator, and rest of the arm muscles.
You guys have good chemistry. Magnus is awesome but he tends to be sort of a serious straight man in his videos, Juji and Tom being goofy with him is a good fit. Hopefully whenever you guys collab again you aren't so sore so you can do more stuff with Magnus.
You guys have an incredible ability to get your guests show so much character and what makes them special. Somehow all your guests radiate with you without anyone being in the shadow. I think it's beautiful

Yeah its like you go on youtube, here's Juji. Has on everybody that is literally fucking awesome, I love how curious Juji is about the smallest details. Some of the most enoyable content out there, peace
I can actually explain the cramping with a very probable hypothesis: When hanging with one arm, Magnus rotates outward, effectively allowing his shoulder to even out the inward rotation (pronation) of his lower arms. Hangine with both arms locks the shoulder joint. Having arms a little bent engages the lats and even creates slight inward rotation at the shoulder. This forces the elbow joint into even more pronation. Whenever a muscle (with it's sarcomeres, it's contractile units) is put on tension while shortened (because of more pronation), due to a process called tetanization and due to more metabolic stress, symptoms such as cramping are more common.
Kudos, this is accurate. And to add more onto this, there is a real reason why Magnus feels cramp in one forearm. It's because both forearms have different internal organs of muscles, so their attachment and their neural connections are different. Usually people are one-handed, and usually this is the right-hand (we observe this phenomenon in most animals from mammals to insects). The primary hand usually has more neural connection and usually takes more of the stress during the exercise, and would start from a more tired state. So cramps usually happen on your dominant hand instead of your secondary one. However, depending on other factors this can change.
EDIT: okay we did it magnus got the info 👍PLEASE LIKE SO THEY CAN SEE! Magnus this finger twiching is caused by Creatine kinase that your body produces after big weight that your fingers need to handle. It should not happen too much when getting long intense workout on low weights. It happens whem muscles are overloaded. I know that becouse i had the same issue and i visited a doctor. EDIT(Since someone reminded me to add this): what can you do to prevent this? (Thats what doctor told me): 1. Eat magnessium and dark chockolate so your neurological system would work more properly and prevent muscle crumps when they are not nessesery. 2. Do not overload my body and go 100% on every traning 3. Most importantly better quality rest! For recover. 4. Better warm up.

"mind to muscle" is a great term for what I was trying to describe in my head before I saw your comment. it's not only the strength of the muscles but also the ability to mentally command them individually.
@@PeachPlastic That's literally what happen ;). When you train your muscle, muscle fiber number increase and gain power and local inervation augment, meaning a nerve will commande fewer fiber, allowing more precise command
Magnus, first kudos for accomplishing all these great challenges and giving super advice. Second, one hypothesis for your cramping after a weighted two-hand dead hang vs. a non-weighted one-hand one is the position of the hand. The muscles of the forearm are stronger with a slight ulnar deviation. The one-arm hang allows this deviation vs. the 2-hand doesn’t. As a side note, the forearm strength is also increased with some wrist extension, although it wouldn’t play a role here since both exercises allow it. Evolutionary speaking, I’d like to think that our bodies maximized strength through activities such as climbing where there is quite a bit of wrist extension and ulnar deviation, but that’s just a far fetched hypothesis.
9:15 I suspect it has to do with the torsion in your tendons and arms on one arm from fighting the rotation as you mentioned before - with two arms and added weight the force goes straight down your arm. I suspect it's similar to the difference of a pronated grip and supinated grip back lever - with the pronated grip there is innate torsion in your arm and thus it is easier on the biceps tendons in the elbows. That is why the supinated grip back lever puts more force on the elbow, because your forearm is turned over but your upper arm stays the same (biceps always facing same direction as chest regardless of whether your hands are pronated or supinated, triceps always facing same direction regardless of hand orientation as well).
The downward force adds to be the same but because of the center of mass being different the magnitude is different and requires more ulnar deviation at the wrist to compensate. The pronation is also greater here as well. So overall, you have to work more forearm flexor because the joint action is more complex.
My forearms hurt a lot from doing lots of EZ Bar Curls at the gym with increased weight at the end of my training. So I just stopped doing them to avoid the pain and possible injury. When he hangs with 1 hand I think he's using more of his back muscles, while when hanging with 2 hands he's using his forearms more.

Had my first climbing comp today. Won a whole bunch of shit. Without these videos with magnus i wouldn't have ever decided to start rock climbing. I won free stuff bc of juji mufu and tom boyden and their collabs. Cheers, mates
To Magnus and Jjimufu, the reason why your hand cramps up when using 2 arms vs one arm is that when you use one arm you open your body up so when the heart pumps it has less resistance and as a result the blood flow through the body is better because of this you have a better balance of ATP in the muscle as it's not restricted. All cramps are caused by a deficit of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP.)
After many years with a heavy chalk-addiction Magnus’s fingers has slowly started to turn into solid rock. Half man half rock. The one true superhuman.
The pain is due to the rotatated position of the arm. 1 arm allows you to rotate to a more comfortable position, 2 arms have to be locked in a certain degree of rotation because the bar is straight. That's why pull up bars at gyms aren't always straight and have fun on angles, it's so you get a more comfortable grip on the bar
Its the pronation of your forearms and flexor group muscles. Also the stabilization of your shoulders with the two arm hang emphasizes more tension on those areas! -massage therapist from Oregon USA
Hi ! New there, coming from Magnus channel. Just wanted to say how nice you both are and that your work is fully appreciated ! Magnus may be the northern climbing god that we're looking up to but Juji looks like the nicest person and Tom is genuinely hilarious ! Keep it up guys !

Maybe even with Devon coming down at the same time?! It would be like The Avengers of armwrestling and grip @_@ I'm having a fitness nerdgasm right now you guys - TOM! TOM! Get me an inhaler!! (I don't even have asthma xD)
Not sure if anyone mentioned it before Magnus, the forearm cramp you feel on the weighted two hand hang and not on the one hand is about wrist angle and forces applied. When you hang one hand your wrist is free to open evenly and is pulled on one plane. When you hold with two hands a shearing force vector is added because your weight is supported by a triangle of force instead of just a straight line, causing additional wrist strain. Cheers!
I actually have that same forearm cramp with my left hand and middle finger. I've found its related to sleep deprivation. (I do climb aswell) I think you need to catch some more ZZZ's magnus!
Not a doctor, not even that fit, but I've got a guess about why Magnus said he cramps from two handed hangs but not one handed hangs @9:00 : When hanging with two hands, the angle of the force on your forearms is different than with just one. Specifically, I'd guess you're using your whole forearm fairly evenly on one side when hanging with one hand, but using mostly the inside forearm of each hand when hanging with both. Any medical professionals out there care to weigh in?
About the reason why you get those cramps, I think that the difference there is that when you hold with two hands your body is straight, but when you do it with one hand your body is tilted to the side and your grip posture changes, making you use more intensely different muscles, probably those that give you the cramps.
magnus gave up couldn't figure out a path for him and just said "just try to get from the bottom to the top using ALL HOLDS" hahaha i was dying laughing, you're the best magnus
I was kind of sad to see the last video you made with Devon and I didn't think the (2nd) series with Magnus could come close. I was wrong :) Really enjoying it as well, hope to see more of him on your channel in the future (as well as Devon Larrat of course), but I believe there is still a Deathblaster match incoming with Magnus? So it isn't over yet!
This is surreal the most interesting series i've ever watched just because of of Magnus! You guys could become his apprentices until you guys can manage to climb a mountain or a moderate large cliff, that would be really cool way how to watch you guys are developing during the process! The fact; Magnus are feeling pain in the foremarms meanwhile hanging with a 2-handed grip is because of the pronated grips combined, which adjust/leads your body into a simulated "pull up hang" that are creating higher fatigue / tear in the forearms. Unlike your 1-hand grip, there you are able to adjust your body in a total different way which allows you to "open up" both your chest, back and shoulder.
its so cool that climbers and bodybuilders/ heavy weight lifters are doing that together ! i think it would be nice to make avideo were the weightlifters show how to build up some leg-strenght ETC ! i know its climbing channel - but alot competition climbers do training at the gym - and only 50% of their time on the wall !

16:01 great laughter that I got form this, it probably cured my sadness too.
Is the 6th finger mandatory or can i skip that part?
Get a job
I like Magnus a lot. Hope he is on here more often.
When Magnus said “easier” at 5:08, it made my Siri turn on lool
Magnus is a beast! He is remarkably strong.
"Make it bun dem" playing in the background at the beginning is great 🔥
MAGNUS should meet up with Frode Haugland (super badass Norwegian armwrestler, 85kg weight class) and bring him on over for a video collab with you guys!! Maybe even with Devon coming down at the same time?! It would be like The Avengers of armwrestling and grip @_@ I'm having a fitness nerdgasm right now you guys - TOM! TOM! Get me an inhaler!! (I don't even have asthma xD)
Devon has a massive grip also
@@matthijsvanemous7046 yeah man exactly it would be so cool to have all those dudes on at the same time
Hell man get Brian Shaw, Hafthor, and Larry Wheels in on it too
Not sure if anyone mentioned it before Magnus, the forearm cramp you feel on the weighted two hand hang and not on the one hand is about wrist angle and forces applied.
I admire Magnus’s humility
that’s the first time ive heard magnus cuss😂
Not a doctor, not even that fit, but I've got a guess about why Magnus said he cramps from two handed hangs but not one handed hangs @9:00 : When hanging with two hands, the angle of the force on your forearms is different than with just one. Specifically, I'd guess you're using your whole forearm fairly evenly on one side when hanging with one hand, but using mostly the inside forearm of each hand when hanging with both.
Any medical professionals out there care to weigh in?
when Magnus shake your hand you can her Odin voice in your head telling you if you are worthy. True Nordic Legend.
That's funny because my name is Odin
i really enjoy you guys collabing with magnus he compliments you guys so well
15:59
I've been concerned about Tom lately...
But it looks like he's back to normal.
About the reason why you get those cramps, I think that the difference there is that when you hold with two hands your body is straight, but when you do it with one hand your body is tilted to the side and your grip posture changes, making you use more intensely different muscles, probably those that give you the cramps.
When Magnus uses his secret chalk he goes full Super Saiyan
That "Do not shit on window" in background have some history
16:19 Damn that control...
*He wasn't even trying*
magnus gave up couldn't figure out a path for him and just said "just try to get from the bottom to the top using ALL HOLDS" hahaha i was dying laughing, you're the best magnus
Hands down 😆 one of the coolest guys ever
Love seeing magnus in the videos feels like he's alot more Confident and comfortable in front of the camera. He got so much swagger now
"Are you my dad?"
Magnus: *perhaps*
Really loving the vibe between you all. Great video, thank you.
Not to be dramatic, but I'm in love with Magnus. Thanks for the rock climbing tips and info, guys! I love the support and positivity in your videos.
I really like magnus man that type of strength is so damn cool
Oh that’s cliffhangers! Amazing gym, had my regional competition there!
Did you dye your hair Tom because of the beautiful manes of Magnus?
gross
This is surreal the most interesting series i've ever watched just because of of Magnus!
You guys could become his apprentices until you guys can manage to climb a mountain or a moderate large cliff, that would be really cool way how to watch you guys are developing during the process!
The fact;
Magnus are feeling pain in the foremarms meanwhile hanging with a 2-handed grip is because of the pronated grips combined, which adjust/leads your body into a simulated "pull up hang" that are creating higher fatigue / tear in the forearms.
Unlike your 1-hand grip, there you are able to adjust your body in a total different way which allows you to "open up" both your chest, back and shoulder.
I love how Magnus fits into Juji and Tom's nonsense :D :D
its so cool that climbers and bodybuilders/ heavy weight lifters are doing that together ! i think it would be nice to make avideo were the weightlifters show how to build up some leg-strenght ETC ! i know its climbing channel - but alot competition climbers do training at the gym - and only 50% of their time on the wall !
5:39 I don't thing those are Tendons.
what are they?
They are, his tendons look thick
@@Domenic367 where Tom pointed aren't tendons. You can look up the Anatomy of the forearms and you'll understand what I mean.
Want to go climbing with Magnus he seems like such a kind genuine person and has great vibes ❤
