  • Williams Lake First Nation is leading the way to create affordable, energy efficient housing for their residents. Sugarcane House is a net zero duplex - it produces as much energy as it uses, reducing utility costs for residents. With rents supported by the First Nation, and utility costs lowered by solar panels, this duplex is affordable for tenants while providing a comfortable home.
The video profiles how Sugarcane House is ready for future challenges brought about by climate change. Through a strong consideration of land and environment, Williams Lake First Nation have created a beacon of hope that can be replicated by other communities.
The Province of B.C. has committed to taking increasing steps to increase energy-efficiency requirements in the BC Building Code to make buildings net-zero energy ready by 2032. The BC Energy Step Code - a part of the BC Building Code - supports that effort to address the causes and effects of climate change.
