- About 20 countries have announced suspension of funding to UNRWA, the agency that has been providing services to Palestinian refugees since 1950.
The official reason for the suspension was Israel’s accusation that a dozen UNRWA employees in Gaza had participated in the October 7 Hamas attacks.

How is one a refugee in their own country?
The legal issue lies in the reply to UN resolution 181.
Israel voted for a 2 state solution, while the Palestinians neither wanted to be part of Israel (Israel also didn't want that), nor did they want to be their own country.
So what legal citizenship do they have? They can't be Israeli citizens with full rights (unless naturalised by Israel, which many did), but they also don't belong to any other nation. Hence the "refugee" status.
They are not traditional refugees fleeing temporarily from some sort of natural disaster or war.

If Gaza is part of Palestine which while it may not be recognized as a sovereign country, they function independently from all nations and have their own government. Refugees are people who were forced to leave their country. So what country was that? The Ottoman Empire…no, then the British Mandate…no. Israel…no. So what country? Palestine never had a country but has been self governing land for 70 years.
@@KomodoDojo Gaza is an autonomous zone with a devolved government. So while they function on their own, they are not fully autonomous (e.g. foreign policy, control of the adjacent maritime waters).
But yes, they have not been forced to leave "their" country, but as you usually cannot not be a citizen of a country, they legally have refugee status - I guess.
I fully agree that these are not refugees in the normal sense.
So much things would be easier if they would found their own nation and live in peace with their neighbors.
The were kicked out of part of Israel proper; Israel did not exist before 1948. The people were kicked out and forced to move into the areas presently considered occupied Palestine (Gaza, West Bank) or they just moved to other countries all together (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon) and these are the places where UNRWA operates.
Why after 75yrs Palestinians are still refugees. After all these years With all that money why aren't they living like every other normal country who also went through hard times and poverty. Doesn't make sense. Where's all that money gone. Why like other countries who don't rely on financial aid from other countries can on their own efforts be able out of war be able to build their own economy from scratch to a better life. Many came to Israel in the 1930s and 40s as refugees from germany Austria etc.
The majority came from Muslim countries after being thrown out when Israel was created. They were forced to leave countries they had lived in for centuries and has to leave everything behind. Many were killed.@@2321brendan

No other refugees get to pass down refuggee status or remain a refuggee once given citizenship in a new country. No ther country had its own refuggee agency. If the arab nations want to fund it they are more than welcome but the west is hopefully done funding it completely. There are tunnels under our local hospital. Doubt if any Hamas are there. Hospitals and large buildings the world over use tunnels for their network cables, servers, water pipes, sewage and electrical cables. Easy to access and not interfering with the building above. I have actually been in the tunnels under our hospital. Haven’t seen a server room in the building though.

Let Palestinians operate their own land, borders, regional waters, airspace, natural resources, and economies. Israel disallows all of these. One example: Israel claims to own all the rainwater, and only allows Palestinians to collect small amounts. To enforce this, they filled all of the Palestinian cisterns with concrete years ago.
Let Palestinians create their own power grids, water systems, wifi, etc. Stop forcing them to buy all of this from Israel. An example: Gazans have to purchase water from their own aquifer from Israel, who uses most of it for the kibbutzim in the area. Water is available to Palestinians for 3-4 hours a day, while Israelis have full swimming pools and water is available 24/7.

The money is not only for feeding but paying staff, services, etc. What you should be asking is how comes up to almost 4 billion to Israel yearly, and now 14 billion for the War. This year alone up to 18 billion.

I've never heard of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren of refugees also being considered refugees. Can someone please explain how that works? How does refugee status get passed down through generations when nowhere else in the history of refugees has this been the case? How can a person be a refugee from a place they have never been? My wife's family are refugees from Syria and have been in the US for 30 years, but my wife doesn't consider herself a refugee. Her family still has property in Syria, but never expects to be able to go back and live there. Can someone please help me with this?

One could suggest that had Israel not held Gaza under an Iron fisted Blockade, and allowed them a Seaport, Airport, and the possibility of foreign investments and tourism then Palestinians in Gaza might have been able to support themselves through a home grown Economy instead of having to rely on UNRA for their continued existence. It might be because they could 'punish' Gazans for a brief moment when they most needed assistance while not having to deal with the fallout of eliminating UNRWA. This strategy places UNWRA in limbo, where it falls short of functioning as it should but, at the same time, won't undergo a replacement. It gives the "major donors" a political cover to weaponize their defunding of UNRWA for a decided-upon period until said donors feel the weaponization has achieved its goals. 🤓
