The St. Petersburg City Council on Thursday voted in favor of approving bonds to fund the new Tampa Bay Rays stadium in the Historic Gas Plant District. After weeks of stalled momentum to move forward with a deal already approved in July, the council’s decision puts the onus on the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, who will vote to approve funding on Dec. 17.
After much deliberation among the council members and citizens who spoke during the open discussion, the vote was 4-3 in favor. Council member Gina Driscoll indicated her support ahead of the vote, saying that the Rays hadn’t sent a termination letter. “They’re still in, and so am I,” she said, essentially assuring the vote would pass.
The Rays have previously indicated that the deal is all but dead, citing increased costs associated with the delay in approving the bonds. Council member Brandi Gabbard, who voted yes, said approving the bonds was effectively calling the Rays’ bluff by forcing them to adhere to the initial deal, instead of attempting to restructure it.
“We need to move this forward, because quite frankly, I think we’re calling their bluff by doing so,” Gabbard said before the vote. “We put it out there, we’re in. We’re a partner in this. Hopefully, the county will follow suit.
“And then it will be up to the Rays to decide. It will be up to them to go back to their partners - go back and find other funding. And then when they can’t perform, it’ll be up to them to come back and say they can’t.”

What I hear from locals, Tampa is the place to build stadium
Of course but it depends on who you’re asking… locals in Tampa will say Tampa… locals in St. Pete will say St. Pete… and then you have those that are scared to drive across a bridge. The Rays started in St. Pete and they want to stay in St. Pete. They never wanted to move to Tampa but uses Tampa as a negotiation piece.
@@jeremybingham7505 scared to drive across a bridge?? You come across as a complete disingenuous pile of trash. NO ONE is afraid to drive across a bridge, it just takes FOREVER to get to a game having to go across that bridge during rush hour traffic. The team should be in Tampa. Oh, and I don't live in either city.
So, speaking as a native of the Tampa Bay Area (and I'm sure there are some others here as well) Tampa built a stadium for football in the 1970's and was awarded the NFL. Both cities were talking about building a baseball stadium and St. Pete got it done first. One thing to remember about the time that this deal was being put together in the early 1980's is that the population in the Tampa Bay Area in 1980 was 1.3 million. Today, that number has tripled and I don't believe that anyone was expecting the area to grow as quickly as it did.
Pinellas County is a peninsula, it has limited land and is overbuilt. Tropicana Field is about 23 miles from Tampa (which is pretty much the central location for the entire area) and there are only two feasible ways to get from Tampa to St. Petersburg, I-275 and Gandy Boulevard, both are long bridges. I-275 has 8 total lanes and Gandy Boulevard has 4 total lanes. Tropicana Field is surrounded by water to the East (7 miles) to the West (2 miles) and to the South (6 miles.)
So fans from the East (Tampa) have to travel 23 miles across long narrow bridges at rush hour into one of the most congested counties in the state to attend Rays games in St. Pete. That doesn't include fans that live EAST of Tampa, areas such as Brandon, Plant City, and Lakeland? Forget about it.
Fans in Sarasota and Bradenton have similar issues, they have to cross the Sunshine Skyway (another long bridge with only 4 total lanes) 25 miles for Bradenton and 46 miles for Sarasota. Fans in the Gibsonton, Apollo Beach, and Ruskin areas have to decide if they want to trek South and go through Bradenton and cross the Skyway or trek North through Tampa and across the Bay in St. Pete.
It was really a dumb idea to put the stadium so far away from the overwhelming majority of their fanbase, but... it was the 1980's and they weren't expecting the population boom that happened.
THIS is why people from Tampa say that having the stadium in Tampa is the best possible location because it's more central for EVERYONE to get to the ballpark.
People in St. Petersburg and Pinellas will obviously say that people from Tampa and places East that refuse to go to games are lazy, not good fans, full of excuses, or whatever else. Why? Because they're salty about being the "little brother" in the Bay Area. Tampa got the NFL, St. Pete didn't. St. Pete opened the then Suncoast Dome turned Thunderdome when the Lightning and Storm needed a place to play, but both ended up moving to... you guessed it! Tampa.
St. Pete was being used and turned down by the Mariners, White Sox, Giants, etc, etc, before finally getting the Rays.
The whole reason why Pinellas County started getting butthurt over this deal all of the sudden is because the Rays chose to play their games at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The Rays playing in Tampa is going to hurt their pockets. With the Rays playing in Tampa, St. Pete won't have a large revenue driver.
This is all political theater.
I will say this, especially for the guy saying that people are afraid to drive across a bridge, there are some people in the Tampa Bay Area that are natives and remember when the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was hit by a tanker and collapsed into the Tampa Bay, killing 35 people and they refuse to get on the Bay Bridges. However, my experience while living to the East of Tampa in relation to Major League Baseball was as follows.
I lived in Plant City and I worked in Tampa.
Lets say it's a random Wednesday afternoon in May and the Rays are playing the A's with a 7:05pm first pitch.
I get off from work at 5pm, with the afternoon traffic, it takes me 45 minutes (and that's being generous) to get home from work. It takes another half hour to get changed and get my wife and kids in the truck. Now, we're headed BACK into Tampa (still rush hour, because rush hour lasts forever) it takes another hour to get to Tampa, now we're crawling through downtown Tampa and it's 7:15pm, we're already 10 minutes late.
Traffic has thinned out and is now moving, there's no wrecks on the freeway around Dale Mabry or Westshore (for once) and traffic across the bridge is flowing at the posted speed limit. It takes 30 minutes to get to Tropicana Field and get parked. It takes another 20 minutes to get the family into the stadium and find our seats. It's now 8:05pm, we're an hour late and the game is headed into the 4th inning.
This scenario is on a GOOD day where there are no wrecks and the kids aren't a PITA to get ready to go.
If the stadium had been in Tampa, it would have taken 45 minutes to get home, 30 minutes to get everyone ready, and 45 minutes to get back to Tampa. We're now at the stadium at 7pm.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that's had these experiences. This is why attending Rays games for my family was always a 10 game a season ordeal and almost always on the weekend.
Holy crap. I didn’t think it’ll go this way
It may not be what you think
This is going to be a problem
It looks like they're at Steinbrenner Field until at least 2027 if they tear down the Trop
Wow. Thank you for sharing all that!
Jimmy from Chicago….Thanks Brodie!……Love your U-Tube videos….I can’t never get enough information….😊😊😊
Let me clarify for Btodie here: it’s not fully approved. The county commission has to vote on the 17th, but in my opinion, this is a huge step.
This is gonna be a huge waste of money
Somebody got paid off!😂
Might as well be the St. Petersburg Rays.
The Tampa Bay Times used to be the St Petersburg Times. St Pete is on Tampa Bay
@@TonyGalano-t5o But it makes it seem like they are in the more well known city of Tampa than ST Petersburg
Nnnnnnnooooooo this is awful!! St Pete has already ruined this org and so have the fans there!!! This will fix nothing!!!
Face the facts. Approved.
@@AndreAllDay20 - Face the facts. Low attendance continues,

@@psychopathyoutubeemployees280 its' cheaper to stay than move. Facts!
Sad day it is. I was really hoping to see a city basically say FU to a pro sports team.
St. Louis did
No!! They don't deserve a team.
Sounds like they voted in approval to spite the Rays, so now that if this project doesn’t get done it’s the Rays’ fault
Stupid plan
Politicians always cave to billionaires.
Sternberg isn’t a billionaire but your point is taken 👍
They want to keep the team in St. Petersburg
Unfortunately this still doesn’t mean they’re staying in St. Pete or the state of Florida. We’re praying for you Rays fans. ~ Heartbroken Oakland A’s Fan
But it's getting closer for the Rays to stay.
@@AndreAllDay20 - Needs to be in TAMPA, not St. Petersburg!
@@psychopathyoutubeemployees280
St. Petersburg are willing to give the Rays the money to build a new stadium, Tampa doesn’t.
MLB isn't leaving Central Florida.
@@psychopathyoutubeemployees280 they're staying in the Tamp Bay area you troll
If it is a choice between St. Petersburg or relocation out of FLA, I will take St. Pete.
You get what you vote for
St. Pete sucks. The fans don't support it. I'm shocked that they approved this stadium
Whatever 😡
Yep😂 taxpayers will be building a fancy new playground for the rich😂.
Rays don't care where they play as long they keep their money in their pockets.
Hopefully this isn't finalized but just a bluff.
I don't think the YES votes were definite votes as I think they voted yes despite still having concerns about the project which to me feels like an impossible task ahead!!!
The new stadium will be a great place for a Yankees home game.
why hasn't the rays tried to get a stadium in tampa? wasn't part of the problem with the trop being to far from the core of the bay area?
Why aren't St Petersberg Rays fans showing up already, if the team is good, and it has been real good over the past 10 years, have the fans been at the trop? All we hear is it's too remote of a location, most Rays fans don't live in St. Pete! Will the people who live in the development district be all season ticket holders? Where are all those Rays fans in St. PETE??? Stu Sternberg now has to show the county and city they have the money!
And the A's cleared the last major hurdles for $1.75 billion Las Vegas stadium. All that talk about how this was all going to implode was all just that talk.
really? I thought the A's situation was still up in the air.
Wait till cost overruns hit. Then, Fisher and Clark County start playing chicken with a half-finished stadium.
St Pete approved another Disaster... This stadium in St Pete will Fail just like the last stadium Failed in St Pete.
I'm a very serious baseball fan but I will very seldom drive west over those damn bridges to go to a Rays game..
Hold on! The Rays have already said if city and county new stadium bonds are approved, they still cannot afford to build stadium because the construction costs have leaped beyond their reach. If that's the case, this and probably the county's bond approval is moot.
Yup. St. Pete is daring the Rays to relocate because now a whole lawsuit will ensue and they'll get money back
@MJofLakelandX Good. Hope this starts a precedent.
Thank God keep that money pit stadium out of Hillsborough County. A stadium is LUXURY ,not a necessity for any city.
Awesome video, straight to the meat and potatoes.
So what?
How is staying in St. Pete going to help draw more fans?
They went to college. They know better than us...
This isn't going to fix they're attendance issues at all
AT ALL. The issue is not the stadium (although the Trop was a dump). It’s the LOCATION.
Sadly, this will be a bust like the Florida Marlins new park. The A's in a new Oakland park with respectful ownership would do better than the Florida teams.
Isn't Marlins Park on the site of where the Orange Bowl used to be? Marlins problem is their incompetent ownership for why fans won't support them.
@@psychopathyoutubeemployees280 Yes it is but some Marlins will support the Marlins not a sold out stadium
But what about Pinellas County? They still onboard or no? If they’re not, this new Ballpark won’t happen.
They vote Dec 17th at the soonest.
Same city council that reduced the insurance?
A few seats changed after the election
You shouldn't be surprised this is political manoeuvring.
It's the county that has cold feet, but the county doesn't want to take responsibility for losing the team.
First they tried to blame the team, when that didn't work, they forced this vote on the city.
This was less of a vote to keep the Ray's and more the city saying they won't be manipulated by the county.
The Rays can't draw enough fans in St. Pete. Another waste of time.
Bullcrap Marlins have less fans than Tampa
HERE TO STAY
Maybe
For now
At least for now one more vote December 17

Yup !
What about that move to Montreal now?
Players prefer Florida over Montreal
Olympic Stadium won’t be ready until 2028
The Rays want to go to Tampa, Lakeland or Orlando.
Let’s talk about building a major league stadium in Sacramento. There is a concrete foundation in place in Sacramento near the old Arco Arena, with plans….
I forget who owns that land but something is slated to be built there in a few years. Then again, that's been the word for over a decade 😂
Best way leave go were there’s lots of support
I don’t understand city’s pay for the stadiums sounds like they don’t want the revenue for yrs to come.
Happy for Rays fans. Hopefully you guys can get back to your winning ways. Baseball is better when the Rays are competitive.
Attendance will still be low by NOT building it in TAMPA!
Bad day for the taxpayers. The Rays ownership what just gifted a huge land deal, the stadium was the kicker
Why nobody is going to go to the games Florida does not support mlb
Agreed!! It’s bad for baseball when there’s not many people in the stands
They get enough with spring training apparently
@GDavis49 Yes... to be fair, though, training is only about a month and change. It's in the beautiful weather months for Florida, and a lot of that attendance is people traveling in from the teams' home regions and making a little trip out of it.
MLB gets good TV ratings in Florida and players want to live there
There are a lot of MLB fans here in Florida! However, the vast majority are retired, on fixed incomes, and OLD. They want to stay home and watch the games on 70 inch TVs and not deal with the hassle, travel, and movement of going to a ballpark.
it's hear say but there are reports that the Rays was also talking to Tampa Bay area too about a new stadium so maybe that is why it got approved for St Petersburg . but the Question how long will it take to be built this new Stadium and if it takes to long will they be forced to move anyway then the question where to .
Seeing there's no more Trop, there is no lease that ends in 2027
The city of St.Peter and the state of Florida better not layoff first responder or teachers because they spent a ton of money on a stupid baseball stadium. Oh if the Rays think this will help with attendance ask your cross state cousin in Miami.
Baseball is dead. Do not bury Pinellas County residents with this debt. Let the people vote, none of this hurried to vote darkness. Hurricane damage is generating a lost bed tax which will challenge 2025 budgets. No, please vote no. Billionaires need to build their own stadiums, not tax payers strifes by hurricane damage.
This is what political will looks like, Oakland
Giving billionaires free money?
Yeah, the will to get duped out of public money by billionaires. Have fun with that.
@gordongross6311 That's how it is to keep sports teams nowadays, public/private partnerships. Some owners pay their own freight, but most do it this way, sharing costs with the local municipalities. Like it or don't
@@gordongross6311 That's how it is to keep sports teams nowadays, public/private partnerships. Some owners pay their own freight, but most do it this way, sharing costs with the local municipalities. Like it or don't
If you want nice things in your city. You have to pay for them
Sorry people but Florida produces more baseball players than any other state Baseball will never leave
So they are going to give the owner of the rays 300 million dollars of tax payer money for a ball park
So the rays are staying, the ONLY Milwaukee Tampa rivalry in all of sports is now saved.

I have a weird feeling, that the Rays are still leaving for another city 🏙️ like Nashville, Tennessee
Just a hunch 😂
Hope I’m wrong 🥃🔥
You’re wrong gang
@ Ok 🤷♂️🔥
We will see
Nashville and the state have committed 2 billion in public money for the new Titans stadium. I can’t imagine they’d do that again so soon for baseball.
This has been the feel of the “partnership” between the Rays, the city of St. Pete, and Pinellas County for the last 20 years. They really need to divorce and move the team closer to where the majority of the fans live. Tampa Bay can definitely support MLB just like how we support the NFL and NHL.
The Rays are staying
Rays should move to Nashville, Tennessee
The 3 NO votes should be voted out next term.
