  • This is the time of year when honey bees colony can still die from starvation, especially on the east of of Newfoundland where we still haven't had a day warm enough to pull frames and do full hive inspections and the bees have bupkis to forage on.
    Deaths like this are an occasional part of beekeeping, though for about 80% of new beekeepers, it happens within the first two years. There's a reason that happens, but I edited that part out of the video because it was too much of a lecture, and we don't need more lectures.
    In any case, I don't think it hurts to give your bees sugar in the spring just in case they're starving.
