I attended the world youth day in Denver in 1993 as a chaperone. And I can remember the sound of the kids screaming. As a child of the 70s, I can remember loud but there was nothing compared with a loud that these kids were giving to pope St. John Paul the second, I can remember that we were way in the back and the kids said let’s go to the front and they grabbed my hand and we went through what felt like millions of kids to get to the stage and there was John Paul 2, People were screaming John-Paul 2, we love you John-Paul 2 we love you John-Paul too. We love you and I watched him walking off of the stage slowly and the kids got louder and louder and louder. And all of a sudden he just stopped and screaming, got louder and louder and louder and then he turned around and it was so loud. I don’t know how I still have my hearing. He comes back to the microphone gets close to the microphone, and all of a sudden in an instant it’s quiet I could see his twinkling blue eyes. He smiled and turned into the microphone John-Paul 2, loves you too, and the crowd went wild.
What a wonderful experience and memory!! He came to New Orleans in 1988 (not world youth day) and I too got very close to him as he passed by in his pope mobile on his way to altar for Mass....he looked straight at me and I got beautiful pictures of him!♥️✝️♥️
Thank you for reminding me to not focus on the negative. I'm the guy that shakes his head in disgust every time a parishoners cell phone goes off or I hear chatting during the sermon, at Mass. I know it's not my job to police reverence or what I may feel is a lack thereof. It IS my job to police my own thoughts....................and for me to remember that only Jesus is Jesus. It is my job to remember to welcome and be nice to everyone Jesus invited to Mass on any given day. I love your work and dedication, my brother, but more importantly I thank you for not getting caught up in the finger pointing. GOD bless you and all that you do!
Thank you for this great program. It brought back memories of when I went to WYD 2019 in Panama. Adoration was a powerful experience there, especially when I heard the Latin lyrics start up, "Tantum ergo sacramentum..." It is amazing to see so many people from many countries join together united in one faith, with the Successor of St. Peter as an important sign of this unity. He clearly went much slower in Portugal than I remember when I was waiting on the side of a roadway for him to pass in Panama. I had thought I would attend WYD 2023, but then opted to attend my great aunt's milestone birthday party. I'm glad that this video brought me glimpses of WYD Lisbon 2023.
Thank you so much for this Chris. There is just so much negativity toward the recent WYD and most of it are coming from America. And its spreading all over the World! Its creating a division among Catholics. As an Asian living in Asia rn, because of all the negativity I am a bit worried for the next WYD which will be in SKorea. I offer everything to Christ. I trust Him and His Church. I understand the problem with Reverence but people must remember, this is a HUGE gathering and everyone is on different levels of Spirituality. The most important is JESUS: The focus is Christ’s Mercy and Love for the Youth, the reason that draws us young people in Him. WYD is a Journey just like life and we need deep patience for that. Love everything that you said here. I hope these Rad Trads and Confused people will be enlighten by the Real Holy Spirit and STOP spreading negativity. If they have problems, they can always email the WYD Committee in private or better yet, GET INVOLVE. Offer EVERYTHING for the Conversion of sinners. Be Good Catholics for Christ!
An Asian living in USA here. So true that a lot of Catholics I can say were probably praying before the event for its failure and post event dissecting ways to show its failure. We pray that these naysayers stop dividing the church further. LOng live Pope Francis

We have to be able to face and discuss problems in the church including lack of reverence. Its having the courage to face the issues and speak the truth!
I say, pick it apart, but make sure you put together the goodness that we see also. Address both sides. In Chris's video, yes, it is super frustrating that there is a giant white cross and not a crucifix, but the positive? This is outdoors, this is not a church. We have JESUS HIMSELF in the Eucharist for Exposed Adoration! Maybe during Mass that would be frustrating to not have the crucifix displayed, but Eucharistic Adoration is about the Host containing Jesus Christ INSIDE of the Monstrance! There is no need in this case to be so nit-picky about the cross in the background.

I was there too! Amazing experience with so many people. This is my 3rd WYD and every time it’s mind blowing to see all these young Catholics celebrating their faith. This is one event where saying your catholic is a great thing.
Regardless of how modernist or messed up the pope is, God always is faithful to His people. Thank you Father Almighty for giving us Jesus Christ and the Church His majesty stablished! JMJ
Chris, I love your enthusiasm and have watched and shared your video from years ago on St. Pope John Paul II. I follow many of the so called “conservatives” on social media. I will say that the photos of the plastic containers confused me, but the lack of a crucifix did shake me. Your criticism of the person who called attention to this on social media is harsh. When we walk into a Catholic Church anywhere in the world regardless of when it was built, there are (should be) visible signs that tell anyone where they are not the least of which is a Crucifix. My big question is WHY was this left out when obviously great pains were taken to make the altar sleek and dare I say modern? Had the crucifix been there, I would have simply chalked it up to a difference in architectural taste. Call me rigid, but the care and attention to that altar without a crucifix and the plastic containers for the blessed sacrament would lead one to believe that those in charge might not actually believe in the real presence. That would be my hope because if they DO believe and treated our Lord with such lack of reverence, well I have no:words.
Chris, thank you so much for your clear teaching about real costly grace vs. cheap grace. If only the Pope would speak as clearly. The reality is, the confusion you were addressing is fueled by what he says/doesn't say/ and the ambiguity he loves.

Their words bring depth to our reflection when we feel pulled from the joy by "the splinters" that are magnified in some commentary. Jesus was present to all those souls...engaged and disengaged alike, He doesn't rain only on the "good"..no matter what vessel or decor was used. Keep spreading the joy of the Gospel!

Chris, I love your work and I love what you do. I have pondered this for a few days. Your comment about noticing that there was no crucifix before noticing the many young people at the WYD event and that it should be reversed. I am going to disagree with you. When I walk into church for Mass the first thing my eyes are (and should be) on is my Lord in the Tabernacle, not how full the pews are. Looking at the altar and not seeing anything that demonstrates it is a Catholic event is something to seriously consider.
I respect that these things are valid concerns. I don’t propose throwing liturgical beauty and form in the trash as if it’s unimportant. My concern addressed in the video is the growing # of people for whom these concerns seem to be all they’re capable of seeing. The first thing they see. The only thing they see - such that they overlook one of the most amazing sights: 1.5 million in silence before the blessed sacrament.

Do you not think the closing of all our churches could be a fruit of WYD and the “spirit”of Vatican 2? Fr Ripperger also speaks on music speaking to our lower faculties, so yes that music could be seen as satanic. Would you eat a salad if there was just a little poison in it?
Nowhere did I say we shouldn’t acknowledge problems in the church. It’s the myopic inability people have to see anything BUT the problems that a growing # suffer from, and even mislabel as virtue/great piety. It’s not.
Worth noting - when I criticized “wokeism” I wasn’t denying injustice in the world, but pointing out the inability people celebrate as virtue to see anything but the problems. The further you get “right” and “left” the more they look the same to me.
It’s just that what happened at wyd seems like a very big problem, a large symptom of a large problem. If we just ignore sacrilege, it will spread and infect further. Read the article from the pillar re the blessed sacrament at world youth day. It’s some good perspective. The plastic wasn’t widespread. It was blown up as if it was everywhere - but was not. I have no issue with fun wake up music at all.
