    This was my grandads train . I want to trace it so i can go see it .can anyone help with phone numbers/ timetables etc etc

    Yes, wrong way round.
    With Stephensons Gear (Williams Gear, actually, stolen by *Robert* Stephenson), the longer the cutoff, the less the Lead.
    Quite frequently, in Full Gear, Stevo has *negative* Lead; that is to say at Dead Centre, the valve has (not quite) yet opened the inlet port.
    This is a VERY favourable circumstance to induce as smooth a torque throught the crank circle as a steamer can achieve.
    Once speed/notching up occurs, Lead is restored to positive values: - best of both worlds
