The SLR01 is the best looking bike in the pro peloton today.

I never said anything about on the flats. Climbing is where is going to make the difference when you are stomping on the pedals up a 15% hill. Weight doesn't matter on the flats but stiffness does.

A high en bike does make a big difference.. from my experiences, a bike that light accelerates a huge amount faster, holds momentum better on climbs and flats and is really REALLY responsive .

I personally bought a 3,7k EUR bike from the very top end. I'm not a pro rider, nor even an amateur. I used it while recovering from injury and as additional training. I seriously doubt that I would've ridden a low end cheaper bike as much. But every time I glanced my Felt I just wanted to hop on it and go riding because it was such a pleasing experience. Though, I can't deny that I didn't like other people complementing my bike. I guess I'm a superficial asshole ^^.

Francesco Moser used heavier wheels so that they would have more momentum for the hour record. Lighter wheels would slow down and not be as easy to maintain at top speed. So light bikes are not always the solution!

how much would one of these bikes cost?

I agre with both sides of this argument, but I bought a top end pair of wheels that cost me £1200, and trust me the difference that I made in my TT times was increadible, all on a sub $1500 bike, the wheels are where the performance can help, and also no point any 200lbs rider spending a fortune on weight saving gear, just loose weight, it helps.

Very true. But for the average joe who buys this it is not about being faster or better. They probably just want a really nice bike and they can afford it, so why not.
It does feel really nice to be riding a brand new top end machine but it wont make a significant difference in performance.

Ian, you should have BMC build my 50 MPH bicycle... I'll give you 5% if you get it done and you'll help change the earth, good deal.... Nice bike, I think Mr. Hincapie rides one like it in my videos.

It makes a ridiculously big difference, I could out climb a considerably better rider if I had a pro tour level bike and he had a floppy, 25 pound aluminium bike.

yeah, but you're being unfair, there are carbon bikes for cheap, which weigh really only slightly more than high level bikes. I'm not hating though, as I train on a $2,500 Trek and race on a BMC TMR01, which is $9,000

  • @richardsonj96

    That setup, probably around $13,000

Of course, on a climb, weight matters a lot. But on a flat course, the extra 5 pounds makes almost no difference cruising at time trial speed. There have been numerous tests done with weights added to time trial bikes and the results were astounding--showing little difference. These results are not promoted by bicycle manufacturers, because they want to sell bikes and parts. We consumers pay a lot of money to save grams, when a pound will make little difference in reality on flat courses.
