Her high notes were like a laser beam. I was lucky enough to hear her live. Her high notes could cut through diamonds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are correct. I saw her onstage a number of times, and she sounded very different than her recordings. In the theater, her voice was warmer and rounder, with a spin to the high notes. On records, especially the Culshaw ones, she’s almost unbearably loud and shrill. I’m grateful that there are pirate recordings to hear that she was way better, and different, than those monstrous Solti productions.

I saw her at the Met Opera, two Wagner operas and one Puccini (Tosca). I also heard her in concert on Long Island . Can't compare live to studio recordings. Live so much better. The same goes with Dame Joan. There's so much sound and overtones with live performances.
There's an album of hers called Swedish Radio Concerts that includes Vissi D'arte and In Questa Reggia. The recordings of those two arias do her voice some justice. It sounds incredibly powerful.
The tapes made from the audience give you a notion of the way the voice dominated in a large space.
They come pretty close. Ive heard her live and on record. She recorded well. The difference is in person it travelled very quickly through space with records cant really capture.
